Thanks for tuning in to another episode of "This is My Lawn" . Today we focus on our update to the recovery of the lawn scarification and melting out fungus. I got impatient and wanted to do the final step to knocking out my melting out fungus is anticipation the fungus was preventing the lawn from being as green as it could.
I started by dehydrating the lawn out. I went from having water 8" into the soil down to 1.5". You can see in the video I have visible stress to the lawn. It's important to remember that we don't want the soil to dry out. With that in mind I spot watered my scalped areas and dry areas so they didn't dry completely out. Our daytime temps have been averaging 90 degrees plus for the past 10 days.
I went 12 days no water . In this video I show results from pushing the water in for 5 days. The results speak for themselves.
Commonly to get rid of melting out and leaf spot I dehydrate the lawn, then apply a 21.0.0 granular with essential plus 1-0-1 and push 1" of water per day for the next week.
I skipped the recovery service. You'll notice in the video the front yard repaired itself and the back yard is not growing as it should even though it has water. The back yard is in desperate need of a recovery service. It's a good example of what a lawn looks like that could use an extra kick of Nitrogen.
The front yard looks like a 9.5 out of 10 in my opinion. It came back greener than every. I couldn't be happier with the results.

That is frickin crazy how well it bounced back. I think everyone has melting issues this year. It rained like 2 months straight here in the spring and I think we’re all chasing it. And figure I put down two bags of Milorganite a month and a half ago and I POURED like mad for a day right after. 🤬 sob washed it right away. I’m gonna try the dehydration as you mentioned on my IG to help w the moss issues and maybe it will help my lawn bounce back .,l but holy hell Man your lawn looks PRO. 😎 level up for sure!

Level up Ginja! Crazy that you had the guts to dehydrate your turf at THIS time of year! And I can't believe how well it came out of it either. I have been mowing at 2 1/2 inches and I really like it the way it looks compared to 3 or 3.5 inches. My lawn is a dark green color, but we aren't in a drought like we had in Utah last year either. Keep up the great work and don't forget to hydrate that mean beard of yours either with some beard oil.

Im doing that with my lawn( 2 weeks no water), but i have patches of poa triv, very easy to see the triv areas now. I was using certainty to kill most of it in my fescue and kbg.

Thanks Lawn Ginja, my lawn is 90% perfect. It should be, right, it's spring. It is thick and I cut at 3.5 inches & I live in the mid-west zone 5-6. My concern is when temps/humidity rise. Considering its thickness and height, it may be more susceptible to fungal infection. My plan is to use Headway G as a preventative and if necessary cut it down to 3 inches. Your thoughts?

Love this video. I’m kinda going through some of these same issues. I’m treating for lawn fungus and disease and it seems to want to creep back. Im gonna try the lawn stressing thing with no watering. I try to do that, then something in my head tells me to water. I’m now gonna tell my lawn, “No Water For You!!” Im gonna try at least 7 days....more if that little voice stays out of my head.

I have rust fungus as well. I believe from overwatering. Over seeded in April and everything was great until last week or 2. 90 deg day with lots of humidity (zone 7). Did you add the nutrients before dehydrating ? I was going to add lime, anti fungal, and some milo.
Matt Dent yes I did. I figured the ground was already wet, so the ground would still take it in. Obviously it won’t all go in completely, but when I finally watered it later, it came back beautifully, and since there was nutrition still in and on the ground, it was kinda like feeding and treating it twice in a week.

If it's truly summer patch the water stressing technique won't work in my experience. It's best to go to preventive and curative fungicides and treat it like necrotic ring spot.

Helps during drought periods and lasts 3 months per app. Lawn Care Nut, Allyn Hane, did a video on it. Curious about your experience with it, if you have used it.

I have used it many times. At my altitude I saved 20% water consumption using it in the granular form. It takes a ton of water to get it activated properly. The technology is simple. As the water evaporates the hydretain molecules help catch the water as it's pulling upward. Worked well for me.

I am in Mass it is super humid here and reaching high 90's...dollar spot and melting out is kicking my ass. I just laid down 3 yrds of loom and reseeded in mid May, grass was growing great but I went crazy watering and that's when disaster struck...I may have to go straight to the nuke stage and use some fungicide...great vids though ginja keep em coming!

I have a Bermuda lawn that is subject to getting moss and wet spots simply due to the amount of torrential rain we get. How about you dry that out?
I'm sorry that's frustrating. Sometimes mother nature wins. Just be patient. May need to spot water as opposed to using the sprinklers.

It works, but if you have a history of getting it annually you’ll need to look at your soil contents to figure out what your deficient in that’s causation

Looks like the MPR Rotors are doing a great job of even watering. How do you like them? They are our favourites to use.
I used to hate these heads until I figured out how little water they put out per hour. Now that I've got everything timed properly I love them.
Jared, once the lawn has shown signs of water stress do you need to keep the lawn dehydrated by waiting a day or more before rehydrating or can you begin immediately rehydrating and still have the negative affect on the fungus? By dehydrating are you killing the fungus or just causing the fungus to go dormant? Fabulous outcome and video!!!
The fungus lies in the debris layer and is commonly activated by too much water. you remove the water and stop the fungus. remove the debris layer and you now used a preventive measure for the future. some grasses are more prone to fungus due to the overall health values of that species of grass. my native grass from the sod farm has low health and I have to compensate that by using more potassium and fungicides for prevention.
We had a ton of rain for two weeks and the tall turf type fescue/fine fescue blend got so much fungus it 80 percent died out in my low areas.

Pest and Lawn Ginja yeah, i raked it out and now it’s hot and dry so I’m going to have to wait till fall to over-seed. Just gonna have a couple 500 square foot dead areas till then. Thankfully it’s in the backyard.

You wisely added iron. I find that most lawns need added iron AND magnesium AND sulphur somewhat more than added nitrogen for deep green colour. Those 3 minerals are absolutely needed for chlorophyll. The lawn will green up with minimal nitrogen but it won't do it fast. Nitrogen adds growth speed, but most often we want the dark green without a heck of a lot of growth if the lawn is already thick.

Love your content and have been a subscriber for 6 months! I need your Help! If brown patch is the same as “melting out” then I think I really messed up! I had a lush (overwatered) perennial rye grass lawn from sod laid earlier this year. Mowed it high at least 2x per week and watered per my Rachio system recommendations. Temperatures here in Northern Oregon have been in the high 90’s for the past week and possibly over fertilized with high Nitrogen. Seeing the Brown Spot starting to take off, 2 days after the last fertilizer I panicked and put down some DiseaseEx, watered it in and have not watered since (5 days). The temps this last weekend here are over 100 and in the 70’s at night. I want to save my lawn that was the envy of the neighborhood and please need your advice on the best process to follow. brown patch and melting out are not the same. brown patch is activated by excess nitrates. my suggestion is to dethatch the lawn. brownpatch commonly sets in the lawn in the fall time. you'll want to do a preventive fungicide next season every other month throughout the growing season.
As always, great video Ginja.....Question: If I'm struggling with melting out/leaf spot, can I follow your instructions in this video (dehydrate, reduce mowing, then fert.) and successfully get rid of this "turd", or do I also need to power rake and remove the debris? Can you beat this fungus without power raking?
The fungus lies within the dead debris. A good freeze will kill it but if it’s warm it thrives. If you wanted to surpresa it for a few weeks you can use azoxystrobin fungicide
I like your choice of 21-0-0 ammonium sulphate for your back yard. It adds both nitrogen and sulphur and does the chlorophyll proud provided all the micros are there too. Have you tried ammonium nitrate (48-0-0) and what do you think of it?
I have. It's hard to find a true ammonium nitrate with that percentage I my area. Its commonly urea. I like the ammonium sulfate because my ph is around a 7.2
Yes. Thx. I see 48-0-0 virtually never now. Back in the 50's and 60's I could get it as easy as 21-0-0, but since it became a well-known explosive agent, I believe it's availability has been curtailed. It's faster than 21-0-0 but it flashes off and dissolves away quickly if you have sandy soil. It's probably the fastest way to add nitrogen that I know of, but only useful if that's what you are trying to do. Also, since it is a very fast very powerful nitrogen additive, I would not recommend it for beginners.

@pestandlawnginja I'm totally new at lawn care, I'm located in Delaware. We're in the middle of heat wave and pretty bad dry spell. I've been watering my lawn twice a week, .5" at a time around 6 am. It looks to me like I have really bad heat stress and melting out at the same time. What would be your best advice for a newbie to try and get the green back? Thanks
you'd need close to 2" of water per week to keep up with evaporation .

What is the best fungicide to rid a lawn of mushrooms? I live in a wet humid area.
No fungicide just slow the flow of water.

hello Ginja! I am glad you made this video. My lawn has the similar issues, but it may be because of my watering for seeding since late April and May I think..(70%KBG & 30%PRG). Also I have quite a bit of poa annua and trivialis. Outside temp went up and they may have been turning brown.?. I wasnt sure if my grass was getting thinned out, brown, and light color because of drought or fungus (melting out) or dead poa, or all.. mushrooms started popping out past couple of days too.I have been fertilizing, applying BioStims and iron since April. grass looked great only in early Spring (except for lime green poaaaa) 🥺 Thank you for your tips. All!! I have backed off watering.

Not yet! The lawn care nut has the best one since he has st augustine in his yard. Most general rules of fertilizing and diagnosing apply to st augustine but I don't have any sort of guide on lawn care. I'm working on it!

I kinda noticed, but to be honest, your lawn looks pretty amazing compared to mine anyway. One question: I heard you mention a fertilizer with a 0-0 at the end. I have hesitated using those ones because they don’t do anything for the roots and I used them once and I could just lift the grass with zero effort as if there were no roots. Are those fertilizers ok to use?

Thanks for the comment. Fertilizer is all about balance. I use the 21.0.0 for recovery. I commonly have other items that have residual phosphorus and potassium in it to balance it out

Jared, finished dehydrating for fungus. I started watering this morning. When do I want to add Nitra King to force growth? Next watering or do I want to wait for a couple of days when it will begin to be cooler in Utah? And given the heat still want Nitra King 21-2-4 1 lbs N/1000?
One note, I’m having difficulty stimulating growth in my front yard. It started growing slow last year I think due to fungal issues and still hasn’t responded with normal growth this year (backyard’s fine). This year there is little sign of fungus especially in front. Believe I’ve also under-watered as growing fine in front under shade trees. Last fertilization .5lbs of N three weeks ago to try and stimulate normal growth.
You can add the nitraking immediately when you put the water back in! The nitraking will help force growth.
@@pestandlawnginja Decided against Nitra King because of the 90+ temps last week. Went conservative with a .75lbs. N of a 50/50 AMS/DPW.
Two questions...first after watering in fert. Thurs. we got 2" of rain in Sandy from this 3 day storm. Screwdriver test shows water down 10-12+ inches. Do you think that amount of rainfall flushed the N app through my sand clay loam and I will need to reapply or does the N bind in the soil and the humates immediately after watering in? Second, do you continue every 4 weeks with .25lbs of N through the hot months of June-August or go longer between apps? Thanks Jared

@Pest and Lawn Ginga, I'm in SW Idaho (Boise) experiencing melting out/leaf spot, similar weather as SLC, hitting 100's this coming week. Should I wait till end of august to dehydrate or just go for it right now?
It all depends on you. I do it as soon as I spot it no matter the temps. It spreads so quickly. What I tell people is if the color and the lawn not growing doesn't bother you then wait till things cool down.

We've had so much rain it looks like rust. What can we do that I can be good with for an organic veg garden? Don't want any unwanted issues/chemicals drifting. Pretty windy here. My neighbors put a weed and feed on and I could see damage to tomatoes and beans...

What do you think about the moisture, ph, and light meter? That gadget with the two prongs. Thinks it’s a good tool to have in your tool shed?
They do a good job! the issue I have is they also pickup the ph of the water that's in the soil. so if you don't have distilled water on hand and willing to put dirt in a cup its better to just rely on the moisture and light of the meter.

I have tttf. Leaf spot and melting out due to over watering and live in zone 6b. We are very humid.
I have not mowed in 2 weeks. Lawn is sitting at 6 to 8 inches sadly. Been swamped with work.
Should I mow before applying a granular fungicide or apply and wait a few days to mow?

Been looking through your videos as a guide. You said in this video that in the front yard you've been putting down humates, calcium and iron every 10 days and macros every 2-4 weeks, which likely means some of the macro treatments weren't posted.
What is typically the macro product you apply during the year...ProPeat, Nitra King or are those nongranular macros in your supplements? Mainly wondering if I am okay using my Nitra King next year as my main macro source or if the quicker AMS formulation is mainly suited for certain applications like recovery or bring the lawn out of winter dormancy.
The nitroking is totally fine. Great product. I would spoon feed it at .25lbs N per 1000 sq ft every 4 to 6 weeks starting in march. I f you have kbg you'll need to do .5lbs N out the gate to get the grass kickstarted. I used a few different products this year. Some of it was a test, some was for content. Macros are macros. Out of them all the pro peat was the best overall.

What was it about ProPeat that made it best overall in your opinion? Was it just the more diversified NPK profile? What's your general view on organics fertilizers? I know you like cpw product.
One other question about the schedule and rates you laid out... Would your amount of N per application recommendations change if you have thin grass you are trying to fill in and thicken through rhizome activation and is there a way through products or cultivation to encourage rhizome growth? I've read frequent mowing is helpful. Thanks again Ginja.
The reason I like it so much is because they have combined a few of my favorite things. Primarily micro nutrients, a water retention product and they stick to ammonium nitrates.
lower mowing can help if the rhizomes are actively trying to push. if it's a shade area I would go lower dose on the fertilizer. thin spots accumulate more salt faster and it slows the grow. I would also consider top dressing those areas with a garden soil to help stimulate growth.
