This is the final video from our trip to Italy last summer. Turn on subtitles for narration.
This channel is primarily our family journal for this project, but we've been very happy to have helpful and kind comments on our videos. For those of you who have been interested in following along, thank you for your supportive comments and suggestions.
Best wishes for the new year!
I love your videos. I am retired and moved from the US to Italy 11 years ago all by myself. I bought a house in northern Tuscany (Lunigiana), but it only had a small garden. I sold it after covid and I'm now renting in Liguria. Sadly, I can't afford to buy a house and property like the one you inherited. You are very blessed. Yes it's a long and hard job to restore the home and eventually work the land, but it is your family's heritage and your son will surely enjoy it when it becomes his. Your style of filmmaking makes me relaxed and happy. I enjoy listening to the birds in your videos and can almost feel the air you breathe there. I wish you and your precious family every blessing both now and in the coming new year. As I say to my friends, I didn't choose Italy, but rather, Italy called me to live there. It's that powerful a place on a spiritual level, in my opinion.
Saluti dalle Marche.
Beautiful dreams in Italy, art, love and sensitivity.
Beautiful series - can't wait for the next videos.
How sad it must be to drive away from that beautiful house! Beautifully rendered in ink and watercolor too.
Ciao ! ti aspettiamo qua'! tornerai... hai del sangue sannita! 😉
I really enjoyed watching your videos, I watched all 6 of them, it made me feel at peace with the future, the music in combination with the beautiful scenery, your beautiful family and your soft voice has made me feel at ease, as bleak as I may view my future it has given me hope. Thank You.
The house is improving a lot and also the cleaning of the garden that you have done is transforming everything around the place into something wonderful, and the story about your family is amazing, it's nice to know about family memories that carry on for generations, I hope you will return to Italy soon
Been following your journey from the beginning. With lots of hard work on the land and the neglected house, you and your family are
slowly transforming it into a wonderful home. The sweat equity that
y'all are investing is already paying huge dividends, in my book. I applaud you for your tenacity and drive to learn new skills. May you
be blessed abundantly in the coming year! Loved your wife's watercolor of the house! 💯 👍
I’m not a plasterer but I watch a lot on UA-cam 🤣 I think it is best to drag the plaster away from corners rather than towards as it has nowhere to go. So e.g. the ceiling join you would start at top and swipe down. Also don’t come back to it until you have the whole section done so it has time to grab. You are making a lovely job of it 😀
I know the feeling , we have a house in Puglia and we wish to spend more time there , seeing you in the video closing the doors has brought to me so many memories
Best wishes for a happy 2024! I also wish you to find ways to be back soon.
The many roads to life! Imo yours seems very pleasant.(albeit some labour of love involved) Thank you& Good Health.
Great work.!
The sound of grass hoppers chirping!
Man i cant wait for summer time in Wisconsin.
The cold winters are to long here!
I enjoy your commentary. Really appreciate your insights into building a healthy family culture. Thank you
Lovely birdsong look forward to 2024
Oh, that was lovely. I watched one of the first vignettes of the summer, I think, and then this last one. What a beautiful diary. Poignant, trying so hard to finish the roof and having to leave it en medias. Throwing rubble into the shed and locking it up: is that metaphoric for something too? Love the fading away of the last images of your son first looking out over the land of his summertime, and then turning calmly forward into what lies ahead. Hope another summer in Italy is happening already now for you three!
👍👍👍 one after the other, everything in its own time. Rome was not built within one day either.
Still a lot of courage and strength.
Part meditation, part philosophy, part famiglia, = SERENITY🙏..... you guys are a beautiful expression of the best qualities of the human condition!....blessings and good vibes, Buono Natale!😀❤🙏
it's the journey that counts, no matter how long or short it is, this is a very special journey & one deserving of time; you will be there eventually & you now have a place you can go & wind down; i think it's lovely that you are restoring the old farmhouse & i think your grandparents would be very proud
thanx for taking us along on this slow journey of yours, hope to see more next summer
Loved the water color!

Magnifique endroit!
Merci bien! Je vous souhaites une bonne année !
Lovely
Beautiful video, I enjoy them all. Your music choice resonates in my heart. Thank you for sharing Rica's watercolor session, it was thoughtful and beautiful. I shared this video with a friend who is an artist 💚 Happy New Year 2024~!
Thanks, happy new year to you as well!
Pure cinematography 😊🙏
Summer. I remember that...
It looks like you've got the lime plastering licked - thanks for passing on the process.
Wondering how easy the transition is between your different lives.
I find the hardest part is estimating how long it will take to finish up projects and preparing to leave, especially now that our son is coming with us. In the future I think better contingency planning for weather, and maybe better organization of our space (tools and such) could help make the start / end go more smoothly.
Is this in Molise? I’m from Molise, this seems nearby. Beautiful house and place btw!
Not far, our place is in the foothills of the Matese area.
Put mortar under the tiles to hold in place also near the wall.
Beautiful! We are following your journey as a family. How many acres did you inherit as my parents were asking, Cheers! 😊
35 or so, but it's very fragmented into smaller parcels due to how land used to be managed in our area. Would be nice to have things better organized, which is something we may try to do over time (sell certain parcels, purchase others, to consolidate). Costly process though.
Lovely videos…when will you be back?
Later this spring.
Just curious, are any of those large trees you’re cutting up good enough for milling? With all the thought you’ve put into everything I’m confident if they were you would have saved but have to ask. Thanks for sharing, I’m a handyman and feel inadequate by some of the things you’re tackling.
The oak species around the house is Q. cerris, which is not milled commercially in this area from what I understand. The reason is that these trees tend to have large cavities and they tend to get wind shake (fractures between growth rings). I've also read that boards will tend to warp more than other species when drying. Still, I think we may mill some for use in various projects with the understanding that most of the tree will end up as firewood. I have dried out a few pieces just to see how it looks and I think we can mill and use some. Finding the time to do so is hard though.
Hi! Loved this episode! We also live in Campania and we're wondering what town this is at timestamp 26:13?
It's Santa Croce.
Nice. The title says southern Italy. I know Puglia is very dry and this looks very green. This means this area is somewhere south of Abruzzo and north of Puglia??
Our place is in the cultural territory of Sannio, which covers parts of Campania, Molise, and Abruzzo. Specifically, the house is in the foothills of the Matese mountains. Water is abundant here. There are two natural springs just a short walk from our house, for example, and the surrounding towns have many such springs and waterfalls coming down from the mountains.
Best for 2024.
Questo posto somiglia molto dove abito io state a benevento per caso??
Vicino a Benevento, si.
Please don't let the vines grow on your home. They'll get in cracks and destroy if.
@@SouthernItalyHomestead grazie mille 🙂
🌟👍🍀💐
Any updates on when you’ll be returning?
Editing a video right now from a recent trip. Not sure how much longer it will take to edit but should be posted within a few weeks.
@@SouthernItalyHomestead - Thank you for the reply!! I really enjoyed your previous videos, looking forward to seeing what is to come!
Roofing always starts at the bottom and works up. Ask any contractor.
For asphalt shingles that's true. For barrel tiles, it makes no difference. What matters is the overlap.
You're not just renovating a house. You are writing a poem for those who lived there and are no longer here. Maybe it will be a poem that will last for those who come after you. Those stones and that forest, wherever you are forced to go, will always be with you and you will know that there will always be a place to take your heart
Maybe a sibling would be good for him to play with and love.
