Great video! I grew up sailing lasers on Lake Ontario. I've sailed Lasers solo and far out in open water in winds and waves like this. Leaning off the stern as far as you can go while on the reach it was terrifying and so exhilarating, no other feeling like it.
Or a run (up by Minden) and the wind smacking you forward, so that you roll back on the transom with your legs high in the air. I'll never forget that.
Late 70's Channel Islands Harbor to Ventura Harbor (So California) Laser races just outside the surf-line in 12+ foot swells! So fun to watch 20-30 of these guys go at it in insane heavy winds. I love your video
The skill require to sail like this is awesome, very real. No wonder so many world class sailors, sailed Lasers & J24's, tough competition of large global fleets is awesome. Just bought a Laser and resumed sailing one after a 22 year gap. Such a thrill and challenge after bigger boats.
When I used to reach the top speed with my old school laser I remember water spitted out from the dagger board and the front of the rudder :) . I really had some real fun with this boat.
I was wondering that too! I know some people find them uncomfortable but thats usually because the boats are setup badly. I love lasers! Good vid here too!
I was once out in an RS vision in a force 8...people watching from the shore said that the mast disappeared beneath the rollers, the waves were so big :P
Fair enough, i reckon i am fairly biased on the subject. I just do love the thrill of trapping out on a cat in high wind conditions. Trimming the sails, tiller under your arm, balancing the boat on the down wind hull, rudders humming, getting blasted in the face with spray, all while trying to keep your footing! Or hitting the bay on a windy fall day before a cold front hits on a sailboard bumpin and jumpin! Thats my heaven. To each their own.
Nope. I disagree. Sailing a Laser well in rough conditions, as per this video, is a nice challenge even for the world's best dinghy sailors. Sometimes planing a monohull is more difficult than sailing a catamaran. The Laser remains a popular design, even for experts. This is why the Laser Radial evolved from the Laser. The fact that it happens to be versatile does not detract from its status.
downwind in the harbour in 20knts against a 4knt tide makes pretty good fun :) you wont believe the size of the waves we get where i sail they arent big like in here but they are very steep and fast moving!. especially when you get close to the sand bar!
when you get these storm conditions with long period waves then you get high waves with a long wavelength (about 75m for a 7sec wave) which makes them less steep and "smooth" between the peaks and you get the effects you were sailing in. Excellent sailing, how did the gybes go?
I always found going to windward was the easier part racing my laser and going dead down wind was the tricky bit, getting too cocky and pitch-poling. Great boat, easy to learn, difficult to master.
Great video!

OK OK OK, you're right... A laser CAN reach the speed of light despite wave interactions.
Lol
Optics reference
@@nicholasstathos1387 I attest no photon was harmed during this joke ;-)
i love days like this, where even the safety boat can have a good time
First time ive ever seen a lazer out knot my 15' catamaran, crazy skill mate!
Wow, that looks like huge fun! Still love blasting along in my Laser, but never tried it in waves like that...... big respect

Victor is a very good sailor....quickly becoming a Starboat champ. Nice video Victor!
That is flying, never seen a laser go so quick
Wow! That is some serious laser sailing. Brilliant!
it takes a truly skilled sailor with brass nads to pull that off. very impressive. great post.
I still love my Laser! Have lots of toys but will never part with my Laser! Well done to this sailor, top notch!
hold my beer while i laser this tsunami
😂
I loved my lazer! Best feature was its ability to handle rough conditions. It cant sink, never floods and is easily righted if it capsizes.
Cool. Gliding laser boat! Nice sailing! Thanks!

Very good Saling that was very big waves and you did not turnover. Very cool
That's how you do it.
Props.
:-)

Great vid!!!
Dude a laser is a crazy fun boat! I remember sailing across Champlain in a trip to and back and yeah in the middle some of us caught air
I was once out in an RS vision in a force 8...people watching from the shore said that the mast disappeared beneath the rollers, the waves were so big :P
Nice job. That was awesome.
Parabéns demais, dá até vontade de ir velejar com vocês, abraços aqui do Brasil

Wow this is hardcore!!! Brave soul!!
I'm a windsurfer and i've always been bored of sailors, but this here seems to be a lot of fun!
I was doing similar sailing to this a few days ago and thought, 'who the hell would ever want to do this?' But it's awesome :)
beautiful boat handling!
Wow good job!
so jealous that looks like so much fun
dang, i would love to try sailing in such extreme conditions
Dude is Killing it
Love it!
If I stayed upright I would be screaming f**********k all the way!
hunslet009 😂😂 me too
holy shit! ! used to do this in Tawas Bay in lake Huron! love a blustery day in a laser! hang on!

Amazing,very brave soul
And they were never seen again...
Crazy bastards.
I love your sense of adventure.
Beautiful sailing, although that must have been a long beat home.
Full control. Very impressive.
You gotta have skills! I tried that once and got my ass kicked.

Who knew a Laser was THAT seaworthy. I guess the captain has a lot to do with it.
That’s fast!
Racing those things is like playing chess in the rinse cycle of your washer
Good handling technique. I noticed him sitting farther aft to protect against nose diving.
Came to see sailing, watched a wrestling match. Incredible skills
that looks like so much fun
he's going so fast, the waves can't even catch him up!!!
laser is the thing from first timer to sailing expert where you will have fun no matter what
Nice!
One brave soul. I'm not sure if I'd wanna take my Hobie 16 out there😂
that'looks pretttyyy awsome
Simple efficace exaltant.
now that looks like fun out there
ESSE CARA È UM ANIMAL!!
very well done,
Amazing!
Is your hat glued on?
Awesome.
This looks fun
We had Laser #4 MacBrien, Toronto
Holy cow!
What a blast.

They didn't go 😂😂
Oh yeah!
Very skilled! How far off the beach was this?
great stuff. who's the sailor in the video?
Impressive! The Southern Ocean is no place for a Laser!
esto es literalmente cabalgar sobre las olas !!!!
Lasers are so much cooler than a Sunfish!
Colin Cheng from Singapore.
Amazing skill and reflexes! I'm still wondering how one would get the boat upwind or back upwind with the RIB (slowly)?
Good racer!!!
I always found going to windward was the easier part racing my laser and going dead down wind was the tricky bit, getting too cocky and pitch-poling. Great boat, easy to learn, difficult to master.
amazing sailing. It looks rather like a fight, and I would like to see him go back from where he came from ;-)
@Janson540123 LOL, "What do you mean round the buoy?"
Would like to see a laser sailing upwind in these conditions
the balls on this man. I can barely cope in like 25 knots
wow I wouldve loved to try sailing my catamaran in that weather... buuut im sure i wouldve pitch poled within the first 30 seconds lol...
you have got some balls.
Relaxing...
i´m not a fan of the laser but this is very good sailing
How much is a good used Laser worth today?
@Janson540123 He doesn't need to tack to head upwind
PITCHPOLE! PITCHPOLE! i was waiting for it to happen the hole time
That's where the RIB comes into the equation
cool
nice
Great fun
The beat the other way is going to hurt like hell lol
Is this ocean? those waves are interesting
