- When we went out sailing it was 25 knots, with big waves. However, after half an hour the wind increased to over 35 knots, wtih gusts over 40. We were quite far upwind by this time, and the video shows our mad dash back to the safety of the SailBase.

i used to sail laser, have not sailed for a year or so because i've benn bussy studying,,, best sailboat ever, this vdeos make want to sail again
the feeling of being on a fast reach with massive waves , there's no words you have to experience it for your self . i just wish the none sailers knew how extreme and good it really feels.
A Laser is a hot responsive boat. I sailed one and a Lightning and a Sunfish before I started Windsurfing at the age of 14. This video was fun to watch.
I think this is the first dinghy sailing video where I actually believe the posted wind speed. Great work!
When someone is asking me "Why do you sail" i show him this vid and say "this is why I'm sailing ;)
at the nationals school champs this year it was blowing 30knots on the shelterd beach in Bridlington, North coast of Yorkshire, our laser fleet was the only fleet out about 3 miles from shore where the wind was around a consistant 40knots with huge waves. reaching down the waves was so amazing and the speed you get surfing them is insane

Love it. I just finished all my videos from sailing around Isle Royale on Lake Superior last month where I encountered waves about that size. I wish I had someone on shore or in another boat to film. My videos show the waves, but not as well as yours. Looks like a fun day...and it's making me want to go back out. Thanks.

I LOVE this video. The first time I saw it i went out in my Laser directly after viewing and although the wind was not as strong as 40knots, there were gusts of a good 30. It was awesome! Wicked video, I'd love some footage like that of myself. You guys rock!
Now this is sailing, i am an instuctor at a little lake in the Okanagan (BC Canada) and we get high winds occasionally 20-30 knots but we dont get rollers like these, this is awesome wish to do more dinghy sailing like this
the laser is by far the best singlehanded dinghy class

Makes me remember old times of waiting for strong blows to go sailing. Being the only one on the lake.Lasers fly when their is a lot of wind. Only thing to beat it is a catamaran.

This looks like so much fun, I can't wait to get my first boat once I save up enough money for one
If you are not too fussy about what boat, you can get on the water very soon. How about joining a sailing club? Many have boats for hire very cheaply and there are members who can point you in the direction of a low cost boat. It does not have to be expensive to get some epic sailing!
Epic! I'm into windsurfing, but I'm well aware that sailing is harder to do when the wind picks up.
I don't why more people don't sail. It can be easy or wild but always fun.

Being a skiff sailor, lasers aren't what you'd expect to put under the title extreme but that looks like a hell of alot of fun.
Reminds me of the old days, I had to take a friend with me because I was to light to sail in extreme winds.
One time I broke my mast doing so :)
As you can see a Laser really flies in strong winds and the spray is sometimes a problem for the eyes.
Buy Oakley glasses they help a lot!

Brilliant sailing I couldnt manage that - he keeps the boat absolutely flat . Am I right in thinking that his kicker is not very tight - there appears to be quite a lot of twist in the sail

Ive sailed there it was a blast big wind big surf. it was an awesome time to get better at high wind extreme sailing. the the lighter wind days were packed full of swimming and learning and improving our skill.

yep if you want speed this is the boat for u with over 3 sail types the 4.7 the radial and the full standard rig

if u aint in the boat then it WILL go over. and in such a fast boat, being strapped to it will probs leave u in a bad situation.
i know the full rigs can be reefed, however it really messes up the sail shape, getting a 4.7 or a radial for strong winds would probs be a good idea. although they need to have a different shaped bottom mast. (its easier to just save cash and reef the big sail, thats what i do.)
Once I saw Lasers under the heading or "Extreme reaching", I knew i'd see some major death rollin.

I agree about the laser not being extreme in relation to a skiff. However, I feel like skiff sailing is a bit harder to get into. So for the 'normal' sailor, a laser is our best bet on extreme. ;)

absolutely awesome. this is why i wanted a laser, but i couldnt afford one so i got a cat instead... il still have great fun though
@collyflower74 - they were reaching, so they were up only a bit. It's a bit hard to see though. It's also useful if you're expecting to capsize and need it to stand on. ;)

i'm not much of a sailor, but i've sailed on bigger boats and catamarans, lots of different kinds, nothing i mean nothing is more exciting than a laser sailed well in a big blow!!!!
I think this boat needs more ballast in the keel so he can actually sit inside the boat instead of having to hang out over the water! :-)

Yea the other day it was gusting 30 (23-25 steady)
So good to be on the waves a. When I was planing, I jumped like a wave every 3 seconds. Soo intense!

@biosSQStacular Well "man", I would give you force 6, gusting into 7, but not 8. It's still windy though, and looks like a whole lot of fun.
nice ! i am only 13 and about 10 stone and i sailed a radial in winds like that i was hurting every were after an hour of it
I have two questions for you guys if that's okay. I'm a new sailor so I wonder 1) if you can reef that laser's sail and 2) is it reasonable or possible to get a harness for the laser? I was thinking that if you fell overboard that the boat might just keep on sailing. Or maybe it would capsize without your weight?

You guys are pretty fly to handle a full rig in 40. I tried it and flipped super a lot of times and almost ran out of mojo quite far out.

The broad reach butt cheek grip. I know it well. When she gets up and hums on a plane I have the biggest grin, and do sometimes scream ooo-hooo!!!! but no one hears it. And watch for that pitch-pole jibe brother!

im 15 and i went out sailing in a race with conditions like this i broke the back pully on my boom for the main sheet, and still came first :) at the cost of my legs and aarms and preaty much my whole body for the week XD

Does anybody know why they have the dagger boards down? Is it to make it more stable in these waves? Amazing stuff by the way. I used to sail a laser and they are amazing in big winds!!

i think my weight is the right right weight for the standard rig its just beating im having trouble with.should i have the mast bent or straight?
@seewaage Don't tie yourself in, and i'm not sure what kind of harness you could buy to tie yourself in. the boat would either capsize or turn up into irons without you in it.
