Thanks for sharing this video. I'm a lifelong citizen of Jacksonville and was witness to the violent and costly labor strike that the FEC and it's employees endured for several years in the 1960s and 70s. This strike was never resolved and FEC chose to persevere with non-union employees as a court settlement in its favor basically ended the strike. The strike changed the railroad as a business as the loss of revenue and the lack of maintenance took several years for it to recover. Today FEC stands as a modern and efficient railway system serving the needs of Florida all the way down to Miami with service also to the west coast of the state. The FEC was one of the first to use the prestressed concrete railway tie back in the 1980s as it was found to be more durable and economical than the treated wood ties, so much so that they built their own plant south of Jacksonville to produce them. Innovation was a theme for this railroad as it's original owner, Henry Flagler built an extension to the railroad all the way down the Florida Keys, terminating at Key West, back in the early 1900s. Unfortunately a devastating hurricane wiped out the state of the art railway in the 1930s after only two decades of service. This 1935 hurricane resulted in the loss of many lives, many were railroad employees; a decision was made not to rebuild as it would not have been economically practical. After WWII the remaining concrete bridges and roadbed served as the foundation for US highway #1 all the way down to Key West, eliminating the need for ferry boat connections. The concrete bridges still stand today having only recently been replaced by modern bridges, a testament to Henry Flagler's innovation. Today's FEC line running along the eastern coast of Florida is a meticulously maintained model of a modern railroad system. The signals and roadbed surfaces at crossings are always well maintained and are state of the art, for example. FEC makes the bulk of its revenue with freight destined to the southern part of Florida as they are the predominant rail service headed south in the state. I only brushed on the history of this railroad, I recommend that those with an interest in American railroad history check out the complete story.
Thank you for the additional info. One of the reasons we all like railroading is the amazing history...really it's the history of the country.
I’m from New Jersey and started with the Jersey Central as a child I sat a station and watched steam great memories.
Hmmm... We have some Jersey Central steam around here. I'll see if we can round it up!
Another great video DeAnn. FEC is new to me. I really appreciate all you’re doing. Sorry I missed having coffee with you this morning. 😂😍👍
Dennis, thanks for the shout-out! Glad you enjoyed this week's video. :-) -DeAnn
I like watching trains and wondering where they are going but it's good to see a old steamer out and about
Oh yes, it's great to see a steamer running! We had a Coffee & Trains a couple of weeks ago that featured the B&O and that video featured some good ol' steam! :-) -DeAnn
I think it’s great that a Lady likes trains I am 73 and will always like them, great seeing some FEC footage, thanks.
Thank you for watching! - DeAnn
Good evening DeAnn,
Love this video of the FEC trains. I live right next to the railroad tracks that the FEC trains run on in Miami.
Would love to have a cup of coffee with you one morning as we watch the trains go by. You're definitely a rare find. A lovely lady that lives trains. Beautiful ❣️❣️
I would love to visit Miami sometime! Maybe I'll be able to take the Brightline?! -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot Absolutely ❣️🌹❤️ And I'll gladly be your personal Uber driver and your guide. You just say when lovely DeAnn
Early diesel motive power, Northern Pacific specifically, is my favorite. Just the idea of you and the crew, having managed to acquire all of the old time equipment on video is fascinating, but also being light hearted. Pretty cool. Thanks.
Sorry for the very late reply. UA-cam didn't tell me you had commented.😠 Thank you for the compliment 😀 and thank you for watching! -DeAnn
Former engineer with Conrail here...I always wanted to work for FEC. Sadly, it never worked out. Love their choice of locomotives; SD 40-2 was my favorite locomotive to operate. Thanks for the video!
It seems like every engineer I hear from favors the SD40-2.
@@Railfandepot My second favorite was the SD 60 conventional cab..totally different 'feel'...it was the 'feel' I had operating them...great confidence boosters in the sense of being able to get the train over the road no matter what.
Blessings dear De Ann..I am from east Florida.. I see these train often🥰
I think the FEC has a certain flair. And of course the history is fascinating.-DeAnn
Awsome video about the Florida East Coast railway but I really missed thos Sd70m-2s it's kinda weird now watching through back videos of them it really brings me back memories. 😥🙂👍
Lots of great SD memories....SD40-2 memories too! Thanks for watching. -DeAnn
Awesome catches of the FEC INTERMODAL TRAINS which are my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE! I'm new to your channel and I'm viewing this from the 1st state of DELAWARE!
Go Delaware! I've never been there, but I'd like to! Thanks for watching. -DeAnn
As other comment, not a road I know much about. So it was nice seeing it for the first time.
I'm happy we could show the FEC to you! :-) -DeAnn
I love how squeaky clean they are!! I wonder if the humidity makes them rust faster if they’re left in the rail yard.
As long as the equipment is painted and kept up, there shouldn't be a rust problem...so maybe that is exactly why they're going for the squeaky clean look! :-) -DeAnn
Hi DeAnn😊👌👍 Great video..
Awwww....Thank you so much! -DeAnn
Sitting at a Red light in Miami today and 163 St. and the new FEC LNG's came in heading to Hialeah pulling about 100 CSX hoppers loaded full of coal. I have no idea who's getting that. Maybe going to the port. I don't think here, we don't have a lot of industry that burns coal. Maybe the cement plant, but nothing that we need 100 hoppers of coal. Always nice to see our FEC surviving just fine.
Thanks for watching! The FEC, with their LNG lash-up, is a very interesting railroad. -DeAnn
Woo-Hoo East Coast is an outfit I've heard of, but never found any serious info on. Now I know it's near Jacksonville, I can get on the case again.
You can hunt the FEC all the way from Jacksonville to Miami. :-)
Good morning! Got my coffee ☕!
Me too! Thanks for watching! -DeAnn
Love it
Thank you for watching! -DeAnn
Another great video
Thank you so much for watching! -DeAnn
If you guys could get down to Miami or Ft Lauderdale you could see a ton of action. You also missed the FEC Locos that run on LP and have a set of 2 locos with a LP tank in between them. They have an red color scheme. I live in FTL and love to watch the intermodal trains and switching traffic by Port Everglades.
I have seen those LP locos and their fuel tenders. Pretty interesting! I don't think they run them anymore, correct? Thanks for watching., -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot Yes, they still run every day in Miami.
I dont drink coffee... BUT, I can have some cocoa!
Cocoa and Trains is perfectly acceptable! :-) -DeAnn
Very nice DeAnn! I'll be a regular on here now! It's always fun to watch trains with you. Be sure and check out some of my Sunday morning videos when you can. Thanks! Stay safe! Cheers, Danny
Thank you, Danny! I will check out your videos. -DeAnn
That was nice thanks😊
Thank you for watching! -DeAnn
We need to have a live chat room
@@adamsmithhammons7546 We've thought about going live and having a chat... we'll see! -Tim
Deann, could we see some K.C.S. vids? Thank you-Bob
Sorry for the delay in answering, Bob. Just so much to do this time of year! :-) Tim says we have some KCS Meridian Sub...how about that? -DeAnn (Merry Christmas!)
That's hot 🔥
They should settle on a paint scheme. Paint them all orange and red - old passenger scheme.
I think they've now settled on the yellow/orange scheme, at least for road engines.
It's called the Champion scheme, after the Henry M Flagler and Champion paint schemes. Orange, Red White & Black.
When was this filmed?
This footage is from 2008. Thanks for watching! -DeAnn
@@Railfandepot thank you!
