Florida East Coast Railway Yards: New Smyrna Beach and Fort Pierce

- I have recently taken the opportunity to fly my drone over a couple of the Florida East Coast Railway’s yards.
The first of which was the New Smyrna Beach yard. The NSB yard is home to the FEC’s primary mechanical shops so there were a lot of locomotives sitting around. This is also where several locomotives are stored, including the SD40-2 locomotives in the “Union Pacific” based paint scheme
The second was the Fort Pierce yard. Fort Pierce is fairly busy with several locals, industries located at the yard, and is also where US Sugar’s South Central Florida Express interchanges with the FEC. The north end of the yard is also home to the Rocla Concrete tie plant which is making all of the ties for the Brightline double tracking project as well as the new line to Orlando.

All necessary requirements for flight and airspace required under FAA regulations were followed during the production of this video. Flights were also conducted at off peak times to try to avoid any unnecessary distractions to the railroaders in the yards. - Авто та транспорт
Well done!
Only one detail missed, the freight customer between Rocla and the intermodal ramp is Decks and Docks Lumber. They receive all sorts of materials by rail.
Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it
Awesome to see those old SD40-2s at the yard. 710, 709, 708, and 704 were at Bowden a few weeks ago, so they must have moved at some point. I hope they return into service and/or get repainted as well.
It is so cool that you are doing the New Smyrna Beach yard! My uncle actually worked there and managed the trains that went through there! And my other uncle was also head of maintenance and picked the blue scheme for the blue engines!
Thanks for the info
Very interesting. Thank you!
Very cool video!
Interesting thanks
Looking for pointers as to good railfan spots in Martin Co..Ty!
Would love a more detailed flyover of the NSB yards with a description of all the buildings.
Excellent job, by the way.
Too bad the old Muelle Cement Plant in Eau Gallie is long gone. That would have been a great flyover and description video.
5:06 If I remember right, the FEC dispatchers were located in that square 2-story building. Judging by the empty parking lot though, maybe they have moved elsewhere?
That was the dispatcher building long ago. Today dispatching is done from Bowden yard in Jacksonville and has been for at least a decade if not longer.
The boxcar between the RC Flat car an Undercutter is that a tool car for the under cutter?
Yes
Hi there,
I am writing a novel. One of my characters is a black man who worked building the levees at Lake Okeechobee. He then went to work for the FEC railway in 1947, when it opened its branch south of the lake. In 1951, he moved to New Smyrna Beach and still worked for the railway there. Is this realistic? What sorts of jobs would a black person have been allowed to hold in those days?
Thanks for any information anyone here can provide.
The FEC-New Smyrna Beach museum just did a huge history of black people working for the FEC. It's a 2 part series.
