      John SMITH what state are you from? I’m currently living in Dixon Tennessee and it is very much illegal here. I’m not gonna say it’s illegal everywhere because personally I don’t know the answer to that, but where I’m from it is illegal and you will get your license suspended and also have to pay a big ass fine if you are caught being on your cellphone.

      Don't even get me started. People talking on their phones are referred to as "distracted drivers". These drivers on their phones are WAY more dangerous than drug drivers.
      #1 reason crash is because of texting/talking on the phone NOT drunk driving. A drunk driver at least knows they shouldn't be doing what they're doing, and usually is very cautious and drives slowly. But yet Talking on your phone her in California only cost a few hundred dollars. Yet Littering is $1,000 and last i check me throwing a piece of bubble gum wrapper out the window didn't kill anyone texting/talking while driving kills people EVERYDAY! We should have a mandatory fine set up across ALL 50 states. If YOU get caught on your phone while driving.......
      1ST offense should be $10,000
      2ND offense should be $100,000
      3RD offense should be LIFE IN PRISON
      Then watch how many MILLIONS of people stop dying due to someone who thought there text message was more important than a strangers life. SMFH

I called a high patrol office once to make a report, and the lady sassed me with, "This is a _business_ office, 'sir'. You call us to _buy_ a report, but you need to call dispatch to _make_ one."

    I've had a radar detector for about 35 years now, and they work great, if you know how to utilize them. The first time a cop clocks *anyone*, the detector picks it up. The only time that doesn't work, is if you're the first person the officer clocks in a several minute span, and he's using instant-on, which not all cars have. Also keep in mind that detectors aren't there to help you speed, they are there to remind you to keep it safe and legal. Sometimes you're just not paying attention, and I've seen people pulled over for ONE mile per hour over the limit.

    Radar detectors are not a waste of money. They will save your ass 90% of the time. The other 10% is like he said, they visually assume you're speeding so they turn on their radar, by then it's too late too slow down. They already clocked you.

      @CrizzyCrazy 7 років тому +1

      Well the thing is in that case you might be able to see them because for them to really gauge your speed it'd have to be day, not saying they can't do it at night but in the day you should be able to see them in the distance as well. Also nice to have the Waze App running as well. And finally, in many instances this could be considered POP Mode. Which is when they flip it on for a few seconds and get your speed. In many states that isn't a sufficient enough measurement of speed. Most RADAR handbooks even state that POP mode is ineffective since it doesn't build a driving history.

    • @watcher206
      @watcher206 7 років тому

      That is known as "instant on" Radar in the Radar detection industry. The police have been using that Strategy for about 30 years now. The best thing that can be done against that is to use the car ahead as a guinea pig for instant on Radar traps. If there is no car ahead to use, then your pretty much screwed as far as radar detection goes.

    • @SergeantPeanut
      @SergeantPeanut 7 років тому

      Unless they build a driving history before utilizing radar. An officer that is good at traffic enforcement (ie your local state trooper) will already have a pretty good driving history on you before they turn on the antenna. Even without other vehicles around its pretty easy to tell when someone is speeding. We've all seen someone driving and thought, "Man, that guy is hauling a$$!"

Still, you can get a fine for doing 1km/h over in almost all European countries, except maybe Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and Russia, if you count it as a European country, but those are known to have the highest mortality rates due to accidents.

    #1 recommendation to avoid a speeding ticket that has helped me out a ton.. Cruise Control.
    When I first began driving a car, I'd get a ticket left and right, either cause I was intentionally speeding or just by habit subconsciously speeding. But then I discovered and began using cruise control, so these days it's habit/second nature, anytime I'm on a highway, or long stretch of road.. i engage cruise control. I set it 4 to 7 mph above speed limit (~72 in a 65 or 44 on a 40) and I have not received a single speeding ticket since.
    Cruise control has caused me to relax and enjoy the drive more and chill and let the car do the accelerating, and it has saved me from the need for speed and subconscious speeding. Also it helps with me being more responsive and able to react better/faster with braking, since my foot is free from the accelerator, i tend to keep it hovering over the brake pedal now, ready to brake if i need to if traffic slows in front of me or someone slower than my cruise control merges ahead of me, or an emergency brake (i.e. wildlife darting across or sudden stop in traffic ahead), as I shaved off the milliseconds to a second to remove my foot from the accelerator and transition it to the brake pedal.
    Lastly, Cruise Control has caused my car to get better gas mileage as compared to not using it, as I'm not constantly overrevving the engine or causing my car to shift gears unnecessarily, or having to actively regain speed from subconscious slowdown or waste gas from subconscious over accelerating and then needing to slowdown and brake when i realize i'm speeding.. So now with cruise control, my car keeps a steady rpm, no unnecessary shifting from overaccelerating/corrective slow down, etc. The gas savings for me in my particular car is anywhere from an extra 50 miles to 100 miles. Full manual driving on highways and long stretches of roads, i'd do ~200-225miles on a full tank of gas, using cruise control, doing 275-300 miles.

    I was helping my sister move across country. I was following my husband in another car. We were passing up a semi truck and my husband gets pulled over. Naturally, I pull over ahead. Not only does my husband get a speeding ticket, The police walks over to me and asks me for my info and gives be a ticket too. (This was TX by the way) Later, we noticed we had ticket of 10 miles over, which is excessive speeding. I know we passed up the semi but we were not going that fast. (Maybe 5 miles over the speed limit) We later paid the tickets ($150 each) About a month later found out our drivers liscense were suspended for not paying the court fee, which we had no idea we had to pay. ($300 each) Then had to pay the reinstatement fees, again a couple hundred more. That cop was a jerk, which made our insurance rates go up. Before then our record was clean.

(And they would give people various "breaks" so that all the tickets were for different speeds. And any time someone complained, they would take them to the patrol car, point to the radar gun and show them that he "clocked them going 80 in a 55."
    I've also seen cops sit near intersections and pull lots of people over for "failing to some to a complete stop" at a light or stop sign - even when it was obvious that they had indeed stopped. There's no way a motorist can defend themselves against those tickets (unless they're rolling video - and even then, a judge might refuse to look at the footage).
    I always hated writing tickets and avoided doing it whenever possible. For me, the best thing about being a cop was when I could help someone - accident victims, stranded motorists, etc.

      We were using old Falcon radar guns. All they had was a digital readout on the back. We logged the time, date, location and other information manually in our ticket books. Not every police department has the latest tech, and this was almost 10 years ago.
      Even the radar and lidar that have time stamps can be faked. All you have to do is take the hand-held unit and wave it as you pull the trigger. Do this a few times until you capture the speed reading that you need, then pull over the next poor sap that comes along.
      Although "quotas are illegal," my supervisor always said, "You should write at least 10 tickets a day. This isn't a quota - but it's a general rule of thumb."
      In other words - we had ticket quotas.

      +Zachary Zarko that's up to your discretion though. If you think it's unethical then it's your choice to speak against it or not. Also just as you said, that was 10 years ago, no need to use an outdated argument to try to make traffic cops look like the "bad guys". Apologies if that's not what you were doing but it sure did look like it.

    The car you drive is a big deal. When I drive my sports car I get a lot of attention from law enforcement. You would not believe the number of times driving through a small town that a police car would tail me; usually all the way to the city limits sign before turning around. When I'm in my mini van I'm invisible to Police. My wife learned this quickly. When she drove my sports car she got 2 speeding tickets the first week. She wasn't driving any faster than she drove her SUV but when you are in a sports car you have to be a lot more careful. If you really want to speed and get away with it you need a sleeper car. Get a car that is fast and handles but looks like an ordinary sedan. You will get away with speeding a lot more in that than in a sporty looking car.

      Ian they arent. police officers and any other law enforcement agency's have to obise by the laws that they enforce. they don't because who is going to stop them.. the only ONLY time a cop or otherwise should be slowed to speed is if they get a call to an EMERGENCY! and hay if you are a cop who has been called to assist in an emergency do everyone a favor use your sirens and lights. that way people can't get pissy cuz your speeding. if your just speeding to speed. do is all a favor and weight your self a ticket. dangerous driving is and always will be exactly that dangerous. slow down please! i have been t bones by speeding cops who weren't responding to aaan emergency. then I got the ticket. that to me dosent make sence. drivers ed teaches defensive driving. keep ur eyes off the cpu In your front seat and keep them on the road. need to use it? pull over like everyone else has to. thanks for being one of the good guys! Thank you for your honesty. Thank you for you service to our community. Back in the 70s in Romeoville we had a cop similar to you. once a friend of mine rode a motorcycle. He didn't have license, registration, insurance or plates. This officer stopped him. He could have got my friend in really big trouble. But instead after a 5 min verbal ass chew the officer went in his trunk and with a tool removed the spark plugs from the bike and told him "You can get these back from your parents after talking to them!" He pushed that motorcycle the 5 miles back home as he watched the cop drive off from his house with his parents outside. He got a verbal and physical ass chew from both parents. It is refreshing to report my friend joined the police force in Romeoville Illinois and beside being a top notch officer he instill the same lesson that cop taught him and his parents. Just though you should know.

    I appreciate the officer's candor. Several years ago, I was following a long line, knowing there was a police car up front. This was on a superhighway (401 east of Toronto, ON). The posted limit is 100 kilometers/hour (61 mph) and usually people cruise along at 118, with no problem. I think this police officer was driving about 105 with about ten cars trailing behind, afraid to pass. I pulled in behind him, after a while checked my mirrors, signaled and pulled into the left lane. I passed him and a safe distance ahead, checked my mirrors, signaled and pulled into the right lane all at a constant speed. He turned on his lights and I immediately put on my right signal lights, and pulled off the road to the right as far as possible (for his safety). He came up to me; I had my papers ready, and yelled, "DO YOU KNOW HOW FAST YOU WERE GOING?" I replied meekly, "Yes sir, I was going 115 (70 mph)." He said, "I was going 110 and you went FLYING by me. Do you know what's going to happen to you now?" No sir, I haven't been stopped for speeding since 1986," (which is true). "You're going to get demerits and your insurance rates will shoot way up." "Officer, you have scared me so much, I will certainly be more careful." He muttered, gave me back my papers and said, "Just be more careful!"
    Bottom line: Be nice, don't antagonize the officer. He's not to blame for your going over the limit. Remember the old adage, you attract more flies to honey....

    Great video! 28 years with the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Department, I retired 5 years ago. I once stopped a Black female lawyer on her way to Court. She was doing 53 in a 40 so I stopped her. I told her got got her on radar doing 63 in a 40. She looks at her speedometer, which is now on zero and says, but I was doing 43. I asked her to step out of the car, which she did. I pointed to a van that was approaching and asked how fast was it going? She looked and said 35! I pointed my radar and locked a speed of 34, showing it to her. I said, "Lady, you did one of two things. #1, you proved my radar was working correctly and #2, you were doing 53. Why did you tell me 43?". She said, "I was guessing". I said, "You're a lawyer. Isn't a guess as good as a lie?". She said, "I never put myself in your place. It does sound like a lie!". I said, "If you were me and someone gave you that excuse, what would you do?". She said, "I write me a ticket!". I said good answer and let her go. 2 days later, my Capt received a letter from this attorney who said I was the only officer to prove her wrong and I was a credit to the Dept.

      Some speed limits correct. If it is posted to do 120 km/h then you have to do that speed limit. But when it is posted no speed limit go for it. But there is a legal maximum. 130 km/h. If you are over 130 km/h and cause a car accident then you are the one who is responsible. Doesn't matter what happens. It is your risk.

      Cameron Raath It is not against the law for police to speed. A majority of calls for service do not require full on lights and sirens, so cops will drive faster to get there in an orderly fashion... You can definitely still get a ticket, but if they're responding to a call, then it's very unlikely.

    • @digidyn
      @digidyn 7 років тому

      In this day an age of shoot first ask later that could be considered a threat and get you more than just a ticket. Yes, I see them doing it too. All you can do is try to use a dashcam or a friend with a phone filming obvious violations then turn the footage over to the police agency and the mayor or whomever is over that police agency. Where I live there's been more than one cop fined and reprimanded for doing just what you describe. If you can get date, time and car # that helps too as they can check their own surveillance footage from freeway and photo radar cameras.

      The thing is I love the officers, they're generally pretty cool guys and confrontation with someone who works 12hr shifts is a little mean spirited, if it's against the law I'll rather stick to keeping to the speed limit rather than adding to the already hectic life of an officer. Thanks for the answers though!

    You can say that radar detectors aren't worth $300 because you can defeat them but you're forgetting one simple fact. People are going to speed regardless and if that $300 detector saves them from even 1 ticket, it has paid for itself. Between the cost of the ticket itself and the amount you'll spend on insurance as soon as the company sees those points, you'd spend WAY more than $300. That said, I'll roll the dice with my detector rather than just figure all cops are so good at running radar that I don't have a chance to defeat speed traps.

    • @logan_kes

      Good detector starts from $400. Like Uniden R1/R3. Best in the class is Uniden R7. Can sense radars 2-3 miles away. Uniden R3 can pay off itself 2-3 times in 1 year. If you add Waze App, then you 90% safe.

    • @photomanwilliams4147
      @photomanwilliams4147 5 років тому

      @@IgorLisx Agree, Waves app free by the way is a GPS for the cellphone. people can enter information such as accident, road hazard or parked car at the side of the road. It also allows easy reporting of police seen which alerts all users of the app on that roadway miles away.

      Instant on radar? Just keep a rabbit or two running ahead of you. Let them get the blue light special. There are plenty of morons on the highway just itching to get a ticket. V1 Gen2👍🚔🚓 and yes using waze is a big help. Also need to have good situational awareness. Head on a swivel ie scan checking all your mirrors, who is ahead as well as behind you. Be a courteous driver which is a much safer driver.

    • @mjm52372
      @mjm52372 3 роки тому

      @@klugermann5806 that’s great for city or urban highway driving but I drive in rural areas a lot and work nights. There’s a lot of times where there aren’t many people on the road with me. I don’t rely 100% on the detector but it has saved me several times. There have been quite a few times where I’ve been running a little late for work at 2am and a bored cop was sitting in the shadows just waiting on the 35 mph, 4 lane road I take to work. Even if I’m going 45, which is not very fast at all, that’s a huge ticket and raise in insurance I’m going to get.

    Secret #8: If you get a ticket for speeding, simply ask to have it changed to a non moving violation like a broken tail light. My job used to be apprehension and prosecution, it involved a microcosm of what cops would do, I used to work with the local DA, Law Enforcement and city detectives (that included many blood family) and would spend days in court.
      Since i'm White and Male, anyone not my race or sex usually took the time to be regarded as a target for racism or sexism, and that turned into the Defense trying to flip favor for the client.
      One Pubic Defender I knew by name, he played this BS with me every time, knowing FULL WELL we had cameras recording the entire apprehension. I'm not sure WHO this guy was working for.
      I did enjoy every win, and I never lost, I might have "given" a little , but never lost, but I never enjoyed being called the shit these people accused me of.
      As far as traffic court, they don't sit usually, they wait till each case it called and stand to the "right hand" of the judge.

And as someone who's had radar detectors for years I can tell you that no, the detector is not going to save you every time, but in many instances it totally will.
