I'm firmly in the "we have enough power now" camp. What GM is doing, focusing on usable low end power, and maybe increased MPG, that's what I'm looking for. This duramax and the SO cummins are ideal IMHO, really looking forward to the comparison between this truck and your ram SO towing the same trailer!
I agree. Just used my L5P to pull our fifth wheel thru the Shenandoah mountains at the speed limits. No sweat. Coolant temp never budged even in 90 degree heat. Trans stayed under 165, incredible. The 10 speed is bodacious in the mountains. Yes, we have enough power now, at least with my loads, but I’m way under GCVW.
Yup. Any power increases in the big 3 after now will benefit hotshotters, farmers, and other heavy towers/haulers… and people who have as much or pride than money and want to brag how much better their brand is (and of course those who don’t buy but like to spectate, comment and criticize). People like me, and thousands more, who have a moderately big 5th wheel and boats or whatnot, now have had for a couple of years plenty for our needs. The cooling advances are probably more important than incremental power increases, and the 10 speed transmissions make
I just bought this truck. It’s is so beautiful. It drives like a car but has the power to tow a house. Averaging around 22mpg highway too! Very satisfied
Thank you for the thumbs up. My truck is a 3500 SRW long bed LTZ with the Z71 premium package. I live in CO but had to go to AZ to pick it up. I just love the truck. Thank you once again. Best regards
Personally, this is the best grill that Chevy has had since 03’. The chrome combined with the new headlights stand out amongst all trucks coming out this year
I just got my 2024 LTZ Midnight edition, and I can say I am in love with this beast. I love the ride and the power. Not a big fan on the High Country just because I don't like all of the chrome. I like the black on black.
Truck Kings, I was wondering when a made in Canada pickup would finally make an appearance on the channel. If nothing else, you could have brought an old Mercury made in Oakville.😉
Man so much power to this beast. The Transmission shifting is my favorite of my truck the automatic downhill shifts too I’m sure this is the best of 2024 yet. I’m waiting for my friend’s 2024 big horn to compare.
I towed my 38' 5th wheel toy hauler with a 21' boat behind it, approx 21k pounds last weekend for 400 miles and my only complaint is the cruise control. In areas of grades, either up or down, it does not compensate quickly or smoothly. Otherwise im completely satisfied. My truck is a 2024 High Country drw.
I have had my crosswing hitch for about 10k now. It has been a great towing experience. The two bolts in the wedge (head unit) the rear one has significantly more rubbbing than the other. Enough rubbing I had to replace the bolt. You want to expect the bolts just from a safety aspect.
Mid July I ordered a 24 AT4HD...my 6th D-Max. Trading in a 2020 HD High Country which has literally been perfect since day one. Tows perfectly! Can't wait to try out the GM tweaks on the new 24 when it arrives!
Great video Gentlemen!!! I still follow you two, knowing that you're in the, as we call it in the states, the great white north, but you still give out information on things both in pounds and kilos. Keep up the great work Gentlemen!!
Hey guys great video! When your using the exhaust brake, are you expecting it to just turn on immediately when you push the button? I’ve found with all 4 of my Duramax trucks that it works best when I set it and forget it like tow/haul. I find that one good brake application (similar to hill brake assist) not a tap will then turn on the exhaust brake. I’m so impressed by the brake when it’s done this way, it will slow my truck down 30-40 km/h over a 800 meter run on a 4% downhill with 19,000lbs in tow. It truly gives a confidence when traveling on secondary highways with traffic lights, 80 km/h to 0 km/h type stuff. Great review! Love seeing trucks being used, makes for the best reviews!
Same. I don't find it doing much until I tap the brake pedal, and the truck detects that I'm going downhill. Some times I find it too aggressive where I just want to maintain my current speed. Admittedly, I'm new to diesel trucks. So, I'm also learning how to use it.
I just bought a GMC 2500HD Duramax and coming from a powerstroke, the exhaust break is noticeably weaker. Love the truck though. Both engines are very strong, but I like the way the duramax builds up torque as you drive it.
The camera timeout was regulation that Ford lobbied to chnage siting it was more distracting taking time to pull up the camera to check in time rsther than letting it be pulled up and staying on. So Ford and GM have done this, not sure if Ram or others have yet.
I bought 2024 3500HD, SRW, DURA, LONG BOX. Added extra main leaf spring each side in rear, Airlift 7500lb wireless airbags, changed rires to load range 129.
2900 payload, 2200 tongue weight 700lb left for payload. Did you include the hitch weight is that around 300lbs? Two passengers 400lbs. You're at your maximum payload without any other things in the truck. You really need a 3500 to be safe. In some states if you do get into an accident they will check if you're over payload. It can be a serious violation.
Going over a tick is ok. I think where some people go to far is going over on a truck that is 10-12 years old with all original equipment. Sometimes in places like MI being a rust state, its not a good idea
While I assumed the Chevrolet and GMC versions were similar, I was pleased to see that the GMC Sierra 2500 comes with the extra leaf springs in the back to cross into 3500 paylod! My diesel short bed 24 can payload 3350lbs!❤
WITH ALL DO RESPECT! Good review overall, but I need to say you are a bit off base when it comes to the engine exhaust breaking system. There seems to be a constant complaint about the exhaust brake on the GMC in comparison to the Ram . KEEP IN MIND THAT THE Allison 10 SPEED TRAMSISSION IS MUCH DIFFERRENT then that of the RAM! The GMC approved (Allison transmission) has 10 speeds and if you use the engine brake and column controls properly, the engine brake works extremely well. I mainly drive in the Rocky Mountains (of Colorado) and towing a 12,500. fifth wheel with a 2022 Chevy 6.6 Diesel, 3500 HD long box . What I have experienced is when the exhaust brake is needed and, when the right transmission gearing options are implemented, the exhaust brake system works exceptionally well.
In my opinion the 2019 chevy HDs looked the best. I've never been a fan of the styling afterwards. Im glad that the focus is more on usable power than peak power.
I’m looking at a 311th10 toy hauler, pin weight 1600 dry, my pwr on my truck is 2775. I’m thinking of adding an overload leaf for stability. GVWR on the trailer is 12500. I believe I’m going to be within my limits. I need some experienced haulers to talk too, I get the “yeah it’s good” from my buddies but idk. Just need confirmation I guess. I’ve only towed twice. One 20 mile trip and a 600 mile trip with a bumper bull. You don’t even feel the bumper pull.
Every time I look at the front end of one of these it makes me think of Mr. Vargas from Fast Time at Ridgemont High. Other than that it looks good. I would like to see you tow this much with a half ton truck that is rated to tow this and show the difference and also where the actual point is where the maximum amount of weight you are actually comfortable towing.
Does your insurance company agree with your payload assesment? I not sure but always wondered if they could turn down a claim if it is shown your over payload even just a bit?
Thanks for the question. Insurance is the most common concern when it comes to being over your payload. We have spoken with insurance companies and insurance adjusters and are planning to release a full video on this exact subject. So stay tuned!
I’m not sure I totally agree with your statement of being over on payload being legal. I suppose it would be possible to exceed the 2900 pound rating and still be under the GVWR which is what really matters. The good thing with the GM trucks are they have the best in class axle ratings (5600 standard front with 6000 available and 6600 standard rear with 7250 available). And then new for 2024 is the max towing package for the 2500s which essentially turns a 2500 into a SRW 3500 minus the 12,100 GVWR which in the commercial usage world would almost guarantee a class A cdl for most any equipment trailer. But anyways, the max tow package gives the 3500 SRW rear suspension package and ring gear and increases the rear axle rating to the same as a 3500 SRW along with increasing the GVWR to I think 11750 pounds. So that would give you 400 pounds more payload as compared to a standard 2500.
Did a east coast trip, 2022 gmc diesel 10 speed transmission with 10 thousand pound fifthwheel vs 2018 gmc HD 373 rear end 6 speed with 12 thousand pound fifthwheel. 2022 burnt way more fuel then the 2018 and 4 jugs of DEf to his 2. No improvement when not pulling the trailer compared to 2018 model. So I think that the 6 speed 373 rear end transmission is better then the new...
Maybe in Canada. But from what I've researched, exceeding tow limits Is illegal in the states, and you could be held liable in court for exceeding that if you are in an accident. My 2500hd is 8100 curb weight on sticker, which means nothing. Its 8500 with me, the wife, full fuel and DEF tank. Add hitch 200lbs, so true curb weight is 8700lbs. So i already decreased my 3100 lbs payload to 2500lbs before even connecting to a trailer. Its a awesome truck dont get me wrong. But most 5th wheels are 2000 lb pin weight empty. Most at that dry weight when ready to go camping, can be anywhere from 2500 to 3000lbs. So my point is, and you touch on it a little. Dry numbers on both the truck and camper really mean nothing. Those are numbers off the factory floor for both. Camper salesmen and dealerships will downplay the tow numbers, truck manufacturers and dealerships will inflate the tow numbers. The only way to know for sure is to fill the tanks on the truck weigh with you and your significant other. Take that weight, subtract sticker curb weight, then take that number off payload capacity. Thats your true payload. On the camper, 20% of the GVWR to calculate pin weight. I would be willing to bet, 90% of 3/4 ton trucka on the highway with 5th wheels are over weight. What you're "comfortable with" i really dont think a jury of your pears will care about. To each their own though
Once again, the exhaust brake doesn’t work just because you pushed a button. It needs to know what speed to hold at. That happens when you have set the cruise control and the trailer is pushing you downhill above the set speed. Then it kicks in to hold your set speed.
@Jason-yq1zs my 23 duramax exhaust brake is useless. Traded one of them in on a ram and it makes the gm look pathetic handling big loads in the mountains especially.
We haven't been in the updated diesel Super Duty yet. Only a gasser. We'll have a new diesel coming in the next few weeks and we'll be sure to tow with it as well to put the exhaust brake to the test.
Try all three dually diesel brands going down on a long way down hill 10% to 15% grade and you will not say ford will be close to ram's exhaust/engine brake. Until Ford and GMC/Chevy make that happen, I will say guts-glory-ram...lol.
After hearing the numbers on this truck, I'm happy to just keep my 2001 2500HD. The new truck have a little more power, but my old truck is rated to haul that RV dry. My payload is about 3,400 pounds.
Thanks, good information. The High Country whether 1500 or 2500HD looks like a town truck. My preference is ZR2. Much more aggressive and robust in appearance but still plenty tow capable.
In Canada you may be able to go over rated payload or tow capacity, but it is illegal in the US. If you intend to tow south of the border you are opening yourself up to both prosecution and, should anything bad happen, lawsuits.
Why not go to a SRW 3500 and be within all of the weight ratings? I'd wager moving up to the 1 tonne category is entirely reasonable if you're towing heavy enough to need a heavy trailer endorsement on your driver's license (not sure about Ontario, but in BC that would mean any trailer over 4600kg or 10,120lbs.).
i like the nose of the sierra better.but i prefer the nose of the fords hd.out of all the hds.i had a feeling howard is leaning to get a silverado or sierra hd.has he looked into the fords hds.
Do a comparison vs 2002 2500HD Duramax to show changes and improvements over time. I have my father in laws’ 2002 that’s in mint condition with 62k miles. Do wish the hood would slope down for better visibility for us who are short of 5’9”.
i hope those split view side mirrors are not like the ones that were on a uhaul gmc van i rented last year...i couldnt see anything that was on either side of me. the worst mirrors i even encountered on a vehicle
well if u watch tfl when the tested it up the ike against the ford with the high output engine, the Silverado got to 60 faster than the ford that had more power and torque, so as always Chevy those not just talk with there mouth they back it up
Looks good, but I prefer the previous version better. Reminded me of a big Lion or a fist. Really tough looking truck. It's really unfortunate so many soy boys cried over it.

I guess you haven't driven the new Ford lately because the exhaust brake is as good as Rams now
We haven't been in the updated diesel Super Duty yet.
Serious question if my 2024 2500 6.6 gas v8 crew cab long bed has 16000 lb towing capacity would that size be safe to tow?
yes, the numbers all work
After hearing the numbers on this truck, I'm happy to just keep my 2001 2500HD.
Your hitch seems to far back in the bed. Putting the weight behind the rear axle.
Looks wise, 2024 definitely looks better than 2023 but still not the best. Still can’t stand the mirrors.
I’m a GM truck guy, always been my favourite of the big three, but I agree those mirrors look weird with the elbow thing going on
Love the show- but why only towing at 60% of max weight ?
Why not go to a SRW 3500 and be within all of the weight ratings? I'd wager moving up to the 1 tonne category is entirely reasonable if you're towing heavy enough to need a heavy trailer endorsement on your driver's license (not sure about Ontario, but in BC that would mean any trailer over 4600kg or 10,120lbs.).
aww this video isn't in 4k :/
The truck is nice I’m not a fan of the white I’ll like one either sliver or champagne
i like the nose of the sierra better.but i prefer the nose of the fords hd.out of all the hds.i had a feeling howard is leaning to get a silverado or sierra hd.has he looked into the fords hds.
My 2011 lml exhaust brake will throw you into the steering wheel.
This Chevy is a standard bed? How’s the wheelbase compared to the ram
2001 silverado hd gas had a allison trany grampa had 1
Do a comparison vs 2002 2500HD Duramax to show changes and improvements over time. I have my father in laws’ 2002 that’s in mint condition with 62k miles. Do wish the hood would slope down for better visibility for us who are short of 5’9”.
Nobody gears down anymore. Why?
10 speed Allison I believe. I might be wrong.
i hope those split view side mirrors are not like the ones that were on a uhaul gmc van i rented last year...i couldnt see anything that was on either side of me. the worst mirrors i even encountered on a vehicle
If I could get that truck with an actual allison 6 speed that would make it an amazing truck
Busy? I'd call it hectic
obeying that request.....the look:not a fan of the grill & chrome. It's probably the least offensive on white though.
I disagree with that. every car makes should do there own thing and not do what GM does
well if u watch tfl when the tested it up the ike against the ford with the high output engine, the Silverado got to 60 faster than the ford that had more power and torque, so as always Chevy those not just talk with there mouth they back it up
similar to my 2020 high country 3500 dually same engine same transmission probably less towing capacity
Looks good, but I prefer the previous version better. Reminded me of a big Lion or a fist. Really tough looking truck. It's really unfortunate so many soy boys cried over it.
It’s sexy as hell!!!
That is a beautiful truck
I prefer the looks of the GMC, just sayin. Seems there is a fair amount of squat in the bed of the 2500 Chevy?
2024 and they still dont have a panoramic moon roof
