Thanks Dad for the feedback on your 2024 3500 HD Diesel absolutely love the video very informative and I'm sure people that see your video might lean towards a Chevy I'm a big GM fan two thumbs up
I've enjoyed watching Howard do truck reviews since his days on Motoring TV. When that show ended I thought I'd seen the last of him until I discovered this channel. Keep them coming Howard!
Been towing fifthwheel with Duramax-Allison for years. They been very reliable. Just bought a 24 3500hd I'm sure it will be also..thanks for the fuel economy. Nice video.
I like Chevy seats. They hold up a lot better. Soft seats show wrinkles and you will see the leather and fabric breakdown faster on soft foam. There is a happy medium. Ram uses a higher quality foam and its seats tend to not break down as fast. Chevy is in between ford and Ram in terms of foam quality.
Chevy truck seats are horrible man, its like sitting on concrete. Plus they bottom seat cushion is too short and narrow. Every other truck brand had 100x better seats.
@@fit4ya1975I agree. I was leasing a 2022 Trail Boss LT with the leather seats and they were hard as a rock. More noticeable after a longer drive. I went to a F150 Lariat and the seats in that truck are like sitting on a lazy boy recliner.
@@AustinTA-cd9rs Awesome man. My cousin has one and I love it. Hows the cab noise and overall quality compared to the Silverado? I have been thinking of switching to Ford again. Last F-150 I had was in 2001
Look at 1 year old ford pickup driver seats with 20k miles and the drivers seat is always already breaking down. lol… Chevy and GM outsell Ford. Must not be a big problem for most people, that is they don’t need extra soft seats for their tender butts or they are tired of Fords looking like an old truck well before the payments are over.
Agree with TK. The seats are highly subjective. I have '23 Sierra AT4 and find the seats just fine for both on and off-road where I spend quite a bit of time. My butt never falls asleep or cramps even after 8-10 hours in the seat. Ram and Ford seats are softer, no doubt. My only complaint is that my Audi has adjustable length seat bottoms and I wish the Sierra seats were a little longer for my long legs.
I have the 2020 2500 and I’m maxed out, the truck handles just fine. Last time i took it to a loves cat scale I was 350lbs over my payload when im full and packed towing a Montana. Perfectly comfortable driving with one finger cross country. I do wish I got the 3500 but tempted with the new aesthetics
Going to be in a similar boat soon, I got the 2024 2500hd crewcab long bed ltz 4x4 with the 20 inch wheels and I am going to be upgrading from our travel trailer to a 5th wheel and will be a couple hundred pounds over payload, I hope there are no issues, I have been considering upgrading the rear suspension with a 3500hd leaf pack and 3500hd z71 shocks since I already have the z71 package on my truck but, I am not sure that will be enough or if I would have to basically get the 3500 ring gear and the frame has a small difference as we.
Great real world review! Love your rig. I am thinking of getting a smaller truck camper so a 3500 is in my future as well. But I hate to give up an F 150 for daily driver.
Awesome review, I found your channel about a month ago while truck shopping. Just bought a 24' GMC 2500 Denali regular bed. Only towed my trailer about 15 miles and it was so much nicer that my last rig. My trailer is only about 8500# loaded but wanted to be able to pull a 5th wheel someday. I really liked you got your wife to drive it while towing. I may have to steal your line of "when the big heart attack happens".
Long beds are great for towing and storage but horrible for everything else, makes you really pay attention and work really hard in parking lots, drive-thru's and narrow city streets. Beautiful truck and that duramax will run circles around the cummins all day.
Fit through the notorious in n out drive with my 19 cclb in AZ seemed one of the better setups I’ve seen. Here in PA there are tons I would not go through
I had a Larime HD Ram for 6 years, Now i have a 24 LTZ HD. We drove 5000 miles pulling 8500 LBs. Got 11.5 MPG. The seats are firmer than the Ram but in the long run both my wife (110 LBs) and I (170 LBs) thought they had better support, we had no aches, and we could do more miles before wanting to stop and get out to stretch. The IFS is much better than the straight axles for on road manners. The ride is better and cab more quiet. I liked the Ram better for front visibility, overall size, and the interior. I don't miss the de-fueling shifting of the 68RFE. The GM just pulled the load better with the 10 speed. Overall The GM milage is a little better by about .5 to 1 MPG while pulling.
Excellent review truck king like you I also have a long bed mine is a 2020 GMC dually we both know that the longer the wheelbase on the tow rig the better the stability and the ride in my opinion my dually handles the wind better than the singel rear wheel I have had both
My 2024 3500 ltz i can get def gauge displayed down by fuel gauge. You have to change the cluster view and it will show temp, def, fuel and 1 more but can't remember what that 1 is.
I see you still have the Ram around. Pity they're so terribly expensive or I'd buy it off you in a heartbeat, always loved that truck from the day you bought it.
Have a 1/2 ton LTZ now with the 3.0 Duramax, but really want to look at the 2500 LTZ (w/3500 frame package) for towing down the road. You are right, the price difference is pretty hefty for what you get by stepping up. The only difference is that I want the technology package and the sport package which color matches the chrome areas to the paint.
One reason I'm looking at the LTZ trim is for the power adjustable passenger seat for the wife. Tried out an LT for 15 minute drive and she said the seat was a total deal breaker.
Nice review. My only gripe with the seats are they just need to be a little bigger. I have a 2022 and they are cloth, but they still look as good as when they were new. So they do seem to hold up so far and not break down.
Great video once again. And your review of your truck is about the same as my review for my truck. I have a 3500 CCLB DRW and I love the long bed. And like you, I came from a '16 Ram 2500 CCSB CTD. And yes, if a truck has a consumable (DEF/Fuel), it needs to have a constantly displayed gauge!!! As for the exhaust brake, I think the 10 speed transmission has an effect on how aggressive the EB activates. Our Rams had the 6 speed, thus the EB had to work harder, but I also think the Ram has the best EB for heavy duty trucks. I love the LTZ package and it works for us so far. Thanks again for sharing.
I hope that you enjoyed our southern hospitality while you were escaping the Great white northern winter, y’all come back now. Next year try Mobile Alabama we do Mardi Gras too.
You have a fine truck Howard! To me this also highlights reality of truck users vs what the truck companies send out to review teams. You bought very nice truck to do 'truck' work, vs the luxury people carriers with low payloads and tons of bling at huge markups. Truck makers get much bigger margins on those luxury truck shaped SUVs.
Question?? Does your DEF gauge show full when it’s full?? My 2024 2500 shows one bar below full when I pack it full. Great video thanks. Love your channel.
Really good video. I just bought a 2024 Chevy Silverado LTZ 3500HD DRW Crew with the Duramax. Traded my 2020 LTZ SRW 2500HD Crew for many of the same reasons you cited about your Ram 2500. Agree with your comments on the Drivers Instrumentation (DEF and such). I'll also add I'm not a fan of my Ammeter disappearing and being replaced by a Trans Temp Gauge when in Tow Mode. I'd prefer all my gauges all the time. I also miss the rear door lock buttons and the small glove box above the main one I had on my 2500. Chevy also failed on the trim below the radio. The angle of the trim causes glare directly into the drivers eye. I'm sure my next comment is a religious topic, but regarding King Pin Weight and Truck Cargo Load Weight. You mentioned 15 - 17% of the 5th Wheels weight is on the hitch. Most people I know say 20 - 23%. But it actually depends on the design of your trailer or camper. Where the storage is, where the kitchen is, it is a tow hauler, etc. To be sure you should weigh your truck and camper on the scales. Then disconnect and reweigh the truck. Then do the math to find out what your King Pin Weight is on your truck. Not sure what your Camper GVWR is but a 35ft Solitude has the potential of being heavy and exceeding your Trucks Cargo Load even at 38xx lbs. I did the math on mine and its why I went with the DRW. I only had about 200lbs of Cargo Capacity remaining if I'd went with the 3500 SRW. That's a 3rd passenger added. Plus, honestly, I was over the Cargo Capacity of my 2500 so I needed more truck. Thumbs up on your videos and real world examples. Keep them coming!!
I have 1300 miles on my ‘24 Duramax and I installed a Banks Idash for monitoring gears, DPF level and DEF levels. I swear the truck has used hardly any DEF fluid in those 1300 miles and regenned at about 400 and hasn’t done that since.
My LTZ tells me through the information screen starting at 200 miles, how much def is left, and is extremely accurate. If you want a gauge for every little thing, buy a Peterbuilt
I bought the same truck after having a jacked up zr2...hated that truck--swooped it out ..for one ton diesel ..i didn't get 8 ft bed ..thanks for the video
Great review on an amazing truck. God I hope you never have to let the wife drive home under those circumstances, no heart attacks for you good man. I think you knew after the first truck what exactly would improve your towing experience. Long beds are always recommended for best towing experience as well as a 1 ton chassis and heavy duty leaf springs. If the length is an issue, you can always go old school and just get a single cab model I assume since the trailer has more then enough space and carrying capacity for gear. Finally, this is really not a Ram / Chevy comparison because you can buy a Ram 3500 single rear wheel with a diesel, long bed, and standard heavy duty leaf springs. Keep putting out the great content.
I could be wrong about the newest Gm offerings but I know the theme has been with some of the Gm single cab pickups and am guessing the other brands as well, the room to move the seat further back or lean it back isn't there like it is on an extended or true crew cab pickup. I am a taller guy compared to some and I sat in a 2010 model Gm 3500 single cab the other day and I was shocked at how awful it was to try and fit myself into it, my head hit the roof so I had to move the seat ahead enough so that I could lean the seat back further back to allow my head to sort of clear the roof barely. I fit way better in a 1980s vintage chev single cab pickup with a bench seat !. I then sat in a GM crew cab ( this was at a Ritichie bros sales lot ) and it was so much better as I could move the seat base back and tilt the back like I needed. A smaller stature person doesn't necessarily realize the struggles a larger person has to fit into some of these vehicles and unfortunately some single cabs are tight on space and once one has that seat back there to throw your stuff, jackets, etc etc its very tough to go back to a single cab.
@jacobrobinson1260 yes I use it through my phone as well, I know truck itself has navigation but think you have to get some sort of subscription to use it
@brockloy2210 you are right, my bad, my wording was off, if you use the android auto or apple carplay you don't need to get a subscription, if you don't want to use your phone (for some reason) you can get the subscription for the true built in navigation
Nice review, thanks. Is the Nav system dependent on a phone connection or does it have its own data base? Seems like most of the manufactures now days are going cheap and making the systems rely on cell coverage
I just picked up a 3500 AT4 HD and I agree with the seats. I was a bit worried with all the negative comments. The ford seats look gorgeous but the exterior looks like absolute dog💩 so I but the bullet and after driving 9 hours home from the dealer I thought they were no problem whatsoever. I didn’t feel the need to shift around or anything and that’s brand new 0 miles. Don’t know what all the complaints were about
I have a 2018 3500 HD and tow a 5th wheel toy hauler about the same size as your 5th wheel. I find that I wish the rear view mirrors extended out another couple inches. Do you find this as well? They are pretty minimal when looking down the sides of the coach. Seems that the Dodge mirrors stick out farther.
Congratulations on a beautiful rig! Knowing nothing about fifth wheel trailers like this, did you consider a duelly? Do you think the duelly would have added anything to driving experience?
Ok the bad news as the mass air valve must be cleaned constantly……big news as per banks and Dave’s auto …the crankshaft pins are snapping off crank along with motor is dead in the water….
I have a 2016 and I have the same complaints. And is Chevy still automatically lock the doors every time the truck moves 1 in? That's the biggest pain in the ass feature that I hate and I can't disable it.
Hey Truck King, how do you like the seats in your Silverado HD? I was at the auto show in Vancouver last month, and I found the seats in the High Country HD much harder than those in the F350 Lariat, and no where near as comfortable as those in my 2015 Sierra 1500. TY
I was wondering if you had the dealer or another shop apply any of the 3m paint protection film on any of the front structure or leading area of the hood etc, or got a quote from a shop to do X amount of items on your truck ?. I know some people think one just has to get the High Country or the Denali or for that matter end up with painted bumpers on a package with a lower trim. I just see it as a costly headache down the road when the paint chips on the bumpers and its not cheap to apply the film from what I hear. Those painted bumpers can't seem to handle anything and they are costly to repair or replace over a chrome bumper. One just has to look at a line up of vehicles that are some years old at a Ritchie bros auction and see what sad shape some of the painted bumpers are in over the "hohum" chrome bumper that ends up looking better for its age. I thought you did a great job in finding a middle ground for how you spec'd you're truck, and didn't go for a Denali Ultimate just because it has every bell and whistle on it including electric running boards that crap out in our salt/calcium chloride winter roads.
Gm seats suck. Sold 21 Chevy 3500 LT with leather, hard seat because we needed a dually. 24 Denali, same hard seats but fortunately we saved the cushions from the 21. lol. My only complaint. Period. But come on Gm.
I bought a Jeep as a daily driver. I can't drive even a shortbed HD around town, picking up kids, squeezing in parking lots. That being said, if and when I get a new HD truck, it'll be the longbed.
Love that android auto was one of the best parts of the truck that got credited to chev, meanwhile its actually google haha, that's why it actually works because GM didn't make it
Rams ate nice looking but transmission failure has become more common and they are absolutely over priced considering the last major update was 2021 so frankly the ram isn't worth the money

The only thing I don’t like about mine is the small fuel tank… and/or the lack of a higher capacity tank that works correctly (sending unit)
Don't fuel at Love's unless you want to be replacing your DPF over and over. These engines don't get along with biodiesel.
I dash by banks it’s absolutely a must have! Do at least a review on it
Very interesting video. Curious to see follow-up videos as the truck gets more miles. 👍
Awesome video real world stuff 👍👍👍👍
I just picked up a 3500 AT4 HD and I agree with the seats. I was a bit worried with all the negative comments. The ford seats look gorgeous but the exterior looks like absolute dog💩 so I but the bullet and after driving 9 hours home from the dealer I thought they were no problem whatsoever. I didn’t feel the need to shift around or anything and that’s brand new 0 miles. Don’t know what all the complaints were about
Try not to have the big heart attack. Really love your honest videos.
21500lbs for goose/5th wheel, 20k is conventional rating
Glad I’m not the only one who noticed.
Such a great video, thank you!
Great review - seems like overall, things went well 👍
Get yourself a B&W hitch!!
What model Solitude is that?
I have a 2018 3500 HD and tow a 5th wheel toy hauler about the same size as your 5th wheel. I find that I wish the rear view mirrors extended out another couple inches. Do you find this as well? They are pretty minimal when looking down the sides of the coach. Seems that the Dodge mirrors stick out farther.
I want them to be taller
Good review. Should have mentioned over all mpg
Next time
He said he got 10mpg at the beginning of the video but maybe you mean something else
I enjoy the old man's opinion! I gor the 22 gmc 3500 srw, i love it! How can i get one of those beanies?
WOW, that 70mai has incredible tech!
Love’s is about 60 cents per gallon higher than almost anywhere else.
I love you and your son clips 😂
He’s a man’s man for just calling it a Chevy 3500. Like they did in the ole days.
Congratulations on a beautiful rig! Knowing nothing about fifth wheel trailers like this, did you consider a duelly? Do you think the duelly would have added anything to driving experience?
hmmm who would have thought that stiffer springs changes the way a truck handles a trailer behind it.
Ok the bad news as the mass air valve must be cleaned constantly……big news as per banks and Dave’s auto …the crankshaft pins are snapping off crank along with motor is dead in the water….
Do you think there gonna make a diesel truck 1/2,3/4 and 1 ton that’s so efficient that it wont need def
i doubt it
Great truck and review. As far as Mardi Gras..... I'll pass.
Did you happen to weigh your truck and trailer combo totally loaded for your trip?
not this time
Gm seats suck. Sold 21 Chevy 3500 LT with leather, hard seat because we needed a dually. 24 Denali, same hard seats but fortunately we saved the cushions from the 21. lol. My only complaint. Period. But come on Gm.
Good review. Are you still planning to sell the RAM?
it is for sale
Great video
Using the Builtin GPS/Maps you have a data plan with Onstar ?
yeah, free for now - I’ll have to look into what it costs later
Why does your truck have HDMI ports on the front bumper?
If you're talking about the flip door on the driver's side, it's the plug for the engine warmer, glo plugs.
It ain't a true Louisiana vacation without a Boudin. Hope you got to taste this Louisiana specialty....
No doubt
Have u experienced frame flex on that Grand Design Solitude yet ?
I’ve heard of that - but I haven’t had that issue
I just wish you could get cloth seats on all levels.
Actually, a fifth wheel will put 20 to 25% of its weight on the hitch.
I bought a Jeep as a daily driver. I can't drive even a shortbed HD around town, picking up kids, squeezing in parking lots. That being said, if and when I get a new HD truck, it'll be the longbed.
Wow she squats pretty good
Did you decide to keep the RAM??
Wish I could afford to. It’s for sale now
I think your gonna like to have the banks IDash tells you all of the information you’re gonna wanna know
You forgot one important aspect of the truck. No 12v outlets at all.
Love that android auto was one of the best parts of the truck that got credited to chev, meanwhile its actually google haha, that's why it actually works because GM didn't make it
I thought you traded in the Ram?
Rams ate nice looking but transmission failure has become more common and they are absolutely over priced considering the last major update was 2021 so frankly the ram isn't worth the money
Time to sell, the 25's will be out here pretty quick.
Ram tow mirrors suck. Loved the ones I had on 09 Chevy.
You knew this video was coming 😅. Mandatory these days.
Nothing better then a ram 3500 if your towing all the time!
Very nice......
It's the Department of Homeland Security that asks you, "Yeah, what are you talking about?"
But don't worry. That will happen later when you get home.
Its an Awesome truck H!! I bought a new car last night..76' Plymouth Fury from Amazon-- I'll Never Do That Again
