I think you're right that it depends on the person!
I went to art school and the biggest positive was my peers. Being in that environment got everyone to focus more and work a lot harder than we would have individually. My major had a big focus on software, which I find it easier to learn alongside others rather than working off of a tutorial alone.
A dedicated curriculum can also give you a lot of structure and expose you to a lot of things you may not have thought to seek out on your own.
If you know what you want and are good at keeping a schedule, there are plenty of resources you can use to learn and improve quickly. It is also likely cheaper and more flexible than a 4 year college.

I couldn't agree more! Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experiences :). Both have their benefits, it totally comes down to the individual and their learning style and circumstances.

I have not attended art school and managed to have a successful career (although it's difficult). I think it's a great idea if you can find a way to study for free. There is a lot of material I wish someone would teach me.

Thankfully, there is a lot of great free material out there ☺️. It’s an awesome resource for a lot of people

i am currently still in art school and i think my path was unique but worth it! i was lucky enough to have a community college that offered graphic design for an associates. Now I am going for a Bachelors for graphic design!

I went to art school and I say it's not worth the resources unless you're going into commercial art. If you're just doing it to be a professional artist that gets into galleries then it might be worth the money to get the fine arts degree. But nowadays there's ways you can network especially online and save yourself the money and hassle

@@ashleytoltonart Forget what what I said about commercial art. I took visual communications for that field and it was way too expensive. If one must go to art school then go for the fine arts degree and hands on experience.
      Btw your art is beautiful

i would be curious to hear how going online is going for you! i did online for a year in covid during my first year and I really found once I went in person and was working hands on with my professors I felt like I was getting better feedback and more helpful critique.

I love online! But I also have no option to do in person. I could see a definite benefit to having a professor there, in person, helping you more than once per class. :)

2:25 i find this view to be a little narrow... i understand not connecting with someone's art and the medium or the way that they do it but, that doesn't mean that their perceptive isn't valuable. they might be able to give really good critique actually because they are seeing it from a different angle than you are!

6:05 I agree with this! If you can find mentors or professors or even peers who are in a similar style and can help guide one another, it would be really helpful for those who might not want to attend art school or maybe can't.
