Hi Becky!!! How exciting that you are looking for a shuttle bus!!!! The engine receives constant compliments and it is what sold us on it as well! Our solar is working great! We have hadn't any issues of running low or anything like that! We have our fridge (which is just a normal mid size one) running 24 hours and with the lights at night, plus charging our phones and devices. If you need anything as you go down this journey please don't hesitate to reach out!
Love it! We love our shuttle bus. We also agree about the handi door we opted not to buy one with one either. I also research the engine, Transmission,and rust before we bought ours bc we live in New England lots of Snow and salt means lots of rust. If ppl did not want to send pics of the rust we figured something was up. You can't be in a rush to buy a bus bc this is gonna be your home. Your video is going to help alot of ppl. My 2011 Ford has fiberglass panels on both sides of the subfloor. Also, I've not seen it done elsewhere, but, my wheelchair lift is a deck in the daytime, and holds my projector screen at night.
I wasn’t initially considering a shuttle bus but they have a lot more space than transit or sprinter with the same engine and chassis. I also love that shuttle buses are designed for passengers so they would be safer in an accident. I am concerned about how we would fill in windows simply because I don’t want windows where my shower/bathroom are at.
Yes they are super spacious and very tall on the inside!! We love our shuttle. As far as the windows, for our shower we just built over the window on the inside, and spray painted behind the window black. That way you can’t see in the bus, and you can’t tell that there is anything there!
@@growingslowandwild Would you say it is as long as an extended Sprinter van or shorter? This is my biggest concern with choosing one right now for the very specific layout we are trying to accomplish. I have spent hours looking for the cargo dimensions and can't find them anywhere.
Good video! I bought my shuttle in July and JUST got the chairs, wheelchair lift, rear heaters and rear AC out...Some differences, mine is a 1998 Ford, gas engine. I purchased it with 67,000 miles. My clearance is much higher than yours, its weird, the floor is raised high enough that there are no interior wheel wells to go around! My biggest issue is going to be the sagging ceiling, will look in there in the upcoming weeks, but it seems as though there are 2 thin metal beams running front to back that have completely rusted... we will see... for those of you buying one with a wheelchair lift, we used a Sawzall to cut it out in pieces... worked like a charm. (Unless of course you're going to try to sell it.) Thanks for the video, we need more of these for shuttle buses! Been following you for a while, keep up the good work. Safe travels!

I guess I'm climbing under my bus in the morning...lol I needed a wheelchair lift. My main reason for buying the bus is to haul my motorcycle around the USA.
Thanks much for the inside info. That is exactly what I’m considering but the extra tips have really helped. Definate criteria: a diesel engine, and in spite of the aggravation I still want the handicap apparatus. Not because I beed it but because I dearly would love to frame it out and put in a French door. A single bed with room for a chaise lounge so I can sit and look outside (can’t be in the sunlight) as I journal. Also it would be great to put a hammock chair in the doorway. It would be my happy place! Thanks so much for sharing! Will need to write these tips down so I don’t forget them! Have fun traveling!

The Ford E-450 that you have is just the cutaway chassis of the bus, the body is from Starcraft. The 2003 model year, which you guys have, would be the last model year to offer the 7.3 liter Power Stroke diesel engine for the Ford E-Series. It would be replaced by the 6.0 liter Power Stroke for the diesel option until its discontinuation in 2009, for the 2010 model year. After that, the E-Series would only be offered with gasoline engines.

I’m having head gasket nightmares. Just the thought of it gives me heart burn having worked for a construction company with multiple pickups with power stroke engines. Watching the mechanic jack the truck cab up off the frame just to get at the engine many times. With that said I truly wish you the best in your conversion hoping you got a good one

Great Video, Very helpful! I'm looking at a shuttle bus to get the band around when the pandemic ends. A van seems too small and a 40 ft bus seems too big. I'm pretty happy with the shuttle bus size.
you guys are CRUSHING it. VERY envois of that exuberent amount of height room inside. I've heard shuttle buses are actually pretty speedy for the size they are. I'm sure you guys chug right up those Wyoming mountains ;)
Great channel and this is what I plan to do too! Although the engine talk make me cringe, but a 7.3 is a great engine with proper maintenance (especially fuel system cleaning and replacing injectors as needed) . KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!

Glad you guys are uploading again! I thought you two gave up on the channel and the bus. The 7.3 Diesel is the way to go! Other viewers, stay away from the Ford Diesel 6.0 and up! They will breakdown on you and it will cost a fortune to fix.

@@growingslowandwild also, look up Archoil. This company has additives to keep that 7.3 running smoother and makes it a little quieter as well. Trust me you will not regret it.

Hi Michele! Thank you for the kind words! That sounds so fun. You're gonna want space for those pups! The floor is Marine grade plywood. It is fully treated, and much more heavy duty and waterproof than standard plywood so as long as you take a look under the busses you check out to see the condition of the bottom, it should be more than fine!
Do you have issues finding diesel fuel? You said that you don't have issues with mechanics working on it, but do you have to find diesel mechanics or will anyone work on it? My husband and I want to do what you have done, but are currently weighting the pros and cons of diesel engines.
We actually haven't! We have been to a good share of mechanics at this point and never had to look for specific diesel mechanics! Seems like its a very popular and preferred engine that anyone can work on! Part are super easy to find and cheap which has been a huge thing too!!! In terms of actual diesel fuel we have also found it pretty easy to find! We are currently in the Colorado area and diesel here is cheaper than gas!

7.3 Ford Diesel is supposed to be the one to go for. The 6.0 Ford Diesel is supposed to be the one to be wary of. I passed on a great deal on a small schoolie because they all had the 6.0. Thanks for all the great tips.
I needed the lift for my wheelchair, HOWEVER, I found a 98 shuttle, 40k miles, and just so happened that the lift was a Braun UVL. The lift comes out from the steps, then up to level/down to the ground, then hides back into the steps. Going to remove passenger seat to secure my wheelchair, and then plenty of headroom. I have the same seat design as you have.
Watched other videos and you have educated me on what lies under the panels. For this project, your channel is the most informative. As far as seats, if people look around, they can find seats that fold down from the wall. We can fold them down and have 6 passengers or folded up and more storage and eating area.

Did doing this shuttle bus break your budget? I was just wanting to know so I could tell my dad. I want a shuttle bus when I'm 14 so I can work on it (with assistance of course), and it'll be ready to go when I get my license. Also, is figuring out the plumbing hard?
We bought our for $5,000 and since we spread our conversion cost over two years we could barely notice it! We are putting together a detail of expenses so you can have a better idea! But the bigger cost would be buying the bus! We went with a very basic plumbing system so it was super easy and we love how they work! If you back a few videos you can find the one of us installing and explaining it!
The thing w plumbing is: always turn the valuve on SLOWLY. This way. If it leaks, then you can easily stop it if you messed up. W electrical, I just rewired a lamp and used a power strip just in case I made a mistake, and I had my fire extinguisher and a wool blanket (natural fibers don't burn as easily), just in case. I'd go to the library and learn all about how that stuff works, both in a house and RV and online. I have an old hoise (110 years) and you'll see some ridiculous, dumb, if not dangerous fixes the longer something has been around. So, you should know what "right" looks like. Maybe get some classes in it at city colleges. I know they take HS kids. Look up Bob Villa and Ask The Builder. They know their stuff. Lots of people will give you wrong info. So double-check.

This is not my question, but this is always my question to bus/van lifers. Many towns and cities crack down on who they consider to be squatters, so many lifers go stealth with the outsides of their vehicles. Have you ever found a good spot and then have to move because someone complained, or there were regulations?
@@jehnasjunk we very rarely station or park in cities! We like to stay out in nature so we’ve never had issues like that! If we are in town we use Walmart parking lots or similar facilities that accept parking overnight!
@@jehnasjunk If they're so damn worried about it, they should go find the crackheads bothering people at off-ramps or going into stores. Many make more money than you do working. The city won't do it, because you, as a person with some money, the city would like more of it than they already get.

I’m converting a shuttle bus. I have a Ford 2004 E450 with two alternators. I’m trying to figure out how to tie my battery bank to the alternators for charging. I have Valence LiFePh batteries which can be charged with a standard auto gel/gsm charger, so I don’t think I need a converter. The big question is WHERE to hook them to the alternators, in the engine compartment, or the electrical cabinet above the driver? Are the alternators separate systems, or are they tied together?
if you trust the mileage on that odometer you obviously do not live on Earth Just a 2in. raise-kit will jack this thing up to where you will like it better. but use whatever size you decide. Diesel ? Bullet proof? you'd better go read about CP3/CP4 fuel pumps!!! but diesel indeed, nothing else can be it... just do the upgrade before it blows up! ($10,000 repair)
In shuttle buses and school buses there is only one front seat. the right side is taken by the stairs. how are you dealing with this? is the second person just sitting behind somewhere? did you install a seat belt for that person? isn't it a bummer not to be able to see the view together, chat, etc' ?
Yes that is correct! When we had the bus and drove one person sat in the dinnette area and we did install a seatbelt back there and yes it was a bummer not being able to chat or enjoy the ride - one of the biggest reasons why we ended up selling the bus and started over with a vehicle that has a copilot seat! I will say some small shuttle buses do have a copilot area!
As a retired diesel mechanic, the best advice I can give you is----- oil---oil---oil, don't skip your oil changes along with a fuel filter/ oil filter.
can you pls explain what you did with the windows? you took them out, and then what? you said trace them and replace them? replace what, the windows? thanks.
We took them out and cleaned and replaced the seal around them as well as the screws! We used the same original windows just resealed and insulated them better!
So happy to hear! We’ve had a few friends who ended up shutting down their bus when removing it costing them over $1,000 in mechanic work afterwards so that is why we don’t love them!
@@growingslowandwild Wow, that's REALLY high. Fully insured? Please consider, on a "fully depreciated" vehicle, they won't pay anything out if it's a total loss. You'll get what KBB (Kelley Blue Book) says. At that, you could insure it for liability only, then buy house insurance for under 100.00 for the YEAR. And you have to, MUST check rates at least yearly. They WILL take full advantage otherwise. Put it by your bills, like in a checkbook and refer to it.
Do you know more specifically what the “crazy good has mileage” is? That would be much appreciated! Also is there any other specifics on the model you have? I’ve seen some E450s that don’t seem to be that tall! Thank you!
Hi Shelby! Yes we’ve done the tracking and it’s about 14-16 mpg in the highway and 10-12 in city driving. We have a 2003 Ford E 450 on that Stardust body(which is what gives it the height!)

How exciting of a time for you!!!! Just on the beginning of a great adventure! We actually really love that our engine is diesel! They are made to last! They use and need a lot more oil but that is what makes them much more reliable!
The windows can transmit the outside weather into the bus a bit at times. But we use a custom reflective covering for them that helps a lot with temperature regulation. But having the bug windows will helps warm the bus up very quickly after a chillier night so that's always nice 🌞
I’m way late to the game but did y’all take your shuttle bus to a regular mechanic to get inspected or did you have to go to a big rig/diesel mechanic to get it inspected? Idk if it would be different cause we’re in Canada but curious. I know if you go to a diesel mechanic with a school bus it can be $1,000 + 😩
Hello! It depends on the issue. The engine is common enough that many regular mechanics can do work on it, but if it's something more specific or a bigger fix we tend to take it to a diesel shop if possible !
What was your process of painting the exterior of your bus? I want to paint mine...where do you start? If you could go thru the process...I'd love to know!
Hi Karen! We removed all the decals and sanded the whole exterior of the bus, and then just painted! We didn't use tape or anything because we didn't want to create the waste, so our process was pretty straightforward! 😊

@@growingslowandwild yea i have a 1999 e450 super duty ford aerotech shuttle bus with the v10 6.8 i just changed the oil and filter and air filter.a very strong motor with 376 000 miles on it was just converted to a R.V what a money pit. but worth every penny. it will be my home.eventually
Hii! Getting insurance was actually a very easy process for us! We waited until the end of the project, changed our title to RV and after sending some pictures to the insurance agent we were insured no problem! Are you converting a bus? Have a licensed mechanic go over it head to toe. NOT the mechanic at the place selling it to you! Lol. Like a house inspection, never EVER bypass it.

Although the engine talk make me cringe, but a 7.3 is a great engine with proper maintenance (especially fuel system cleaning and replacing injectors as needed) .

Glad you guys are uploading again! I thought you two gave up on the channel and the bus. The 7.3 Diesel is the way to go! Other viewers, stay away from the Ford Diesel 6.0 and up! They will breakdown on you and it will cost a fortune to fix.

Get as large a tire size you can for more clearance. You can also do a lift kit. I'm sure you know...
Yes!! Our friends have larger tires on their rig and it seems to help them a bit. Maybe an upgrade later down the road or on the next rig !!!

The floor is Marine grade plywood. It is fully treated, and much more heavy duty and waterproof than standard plywood so as long as you take a look under the busses you check out to see the condition of the bottom, it should be more than fine!

Do you have issues finding diesel fuel? You said that you don't have issues with mechanics working on it, but do you have to find diesel mechanics or will anyone work on it? My husband and I want to do what you have done, but are currently weighting the pros and cons of diesel engines.
We actually haven't! We have been to a good share of mechanics at this point and never had to look for specific diesel mechanics! Seems like its a very popular and preferred engine that anyone can work on! Part are super easy to find and cheap which has been a huge thing too!!! In terms of actual diesel fuel we have also found it pretty easy to find! We are currently in the Colorado area and diesel here is cheaper than gas!

7.3 Ford Diesel is supposed to be the one to go for. The 6.0 Ford Diesel is supposed to be the one to be wary of. I passed on a great deal on a small schoolie because they all had the 6.0.

Yes exactly!!!! The 7.3 and the v8 is what we have and what we hear is bulletproof!!!
The 6.0 is a great engine. Don't let people tell you different. You just have to get gauges and make sure you dont run it too hot.
I needed the lift for my wheelchair, HOWEVER, I found a 98 shuttle, 40k miles, and just so happened that the lift was a Braun UVL. The lift comes out from the steps, then up to level/down to the ground, then hides back into the steps. Going to remove passenger seat to secure my wheelchair, and then plenty of headroom.
I have the same seat design as you have.

As far as seats, if people look around, they can find seats that fold down from the wall. We can fold them down and have 6 passengers or folded up and more storage and eating area.

That’s a good addition! We kept them but regretted that decision! They are not great for security or temperature regulation.

Did doing this shuttle bus break your budget? I was just wanting to know so I could tell my dad. I want a shuttle bus when I'm 14 so I can work on it (with assistance of course), and it'll be ready to go when I get my license. Also, is figuring out the plumbing hard?
We bought our for $5,000 and since we spread our conversion cost over two years we could barely notice it! We are putting together a detail of expenses so you can have a better idea! But the bigger cost would be buying the bus!
We went with a very basic plumbing system so it was super easy and we love how they work! If you back a few videos you can find the one of us installing and explaining it!
The thing w plumbing is: always turn the valuve on SLOWLY. This way. If it leaks, then you can easily stop it if you messed up. W electrical, I just rewired a lamp and used a power strip just in case I made a mistake, and I had my fire extinguisher and a wool blanket (natural fibers don't burn as easily), just in case.
I'd go to the library and learn all about how that stuff works, both in a house and RV and online. I have an old hoise (110 years) and you'll see some ridiculous, dumb, if not dangerous fixes the longer something has been around. So, you should know what "right" looks like. Maybe get some classes in it at city colleges. I know they take HS kids.
Look up Bob Villa and Ask The Builder. They know their stuff. Lots of people will give you wrong info. So double-check.

How about safety. Do you feel like the windows and door are secure or what did you do to make sure they are secure while you are sleeping?
We modified the door and the locks for extra security definitely recommend doing that!
Try a lift kit or air shocks
I fit a 45 gallon tank underneath .. it peeks out about 3 inches

This is not my question, but this is always my question to bus/van lifers. Many towns and cities crack down on who they consider to be squatters, so many lifers go stealth with the outsides of their vehicles. Have you ever found a good spot and then have to move because someone complained, or there were regulations?
@@jehnasjunk we very rarely station or park in cities! We like to stay out in nature so we’ve never had issues like that! If we are in town we use Walmart parking lots or similar facilities that accept parking overnight!

The city won't do it, because you, as a person with some money, the city would like more of it than they already get.

I’m converting a shuttle bus. I have a Ford 2004 E450 with two alternators. I’m trying to figure out how to tie my battery bank to the alternators for charging. I have Valence LiFePh batteries which can be charged with a standard auto gel/gsm charger, so I don’t think I need a converter. The big question is WHERE to hook them to the alternators, in the engine compartment, or the electrical cabinet above the driver? Are the alternators separate systems, or are they tied together?

In shuttle buses and school buses there is only one front seat. the right side is taken by the stairs. how are you dealing with this? is the second person just sitting behind somewhere? did you install a seat belt for that person? isn't it a bummer not to be able to see the view together, chat, etc' ?
Yes that is correct! When we had the bus and drove one person sat in the dinnette area and we did install a seatbelt back there and yes it was a bummer not being able to chat or enjoy the ride - one of the biggest reasons why we ended up selling the bus and started over with a vehicle that has a copilot seat! I will say some small shuttle buses do have a copilot area!

As a retired diesel mechanic, the best advice I can give you is----- oil---oil---oil, don't skip your oil changes along with a fuel filter/ oil filter.

We took them out and cleaned and replaced the seal around them as well as the screws! We used the same original windows just resealed and insulated them better!

Could you give us your engine specks what engine it is.
Also what your gas tank size is so I can do math on the mpg.
It is a Ford E450 power stroke diesel 7.3L V8 engine and I believe the tank is 35 gallons!
Insurance how is it insured and how much do you pay, what company ect
We go in detail in our Q&A vídeo but we are insured through Progressive about $100 a month!
@@growingslowandwild Wow, that's REALLY high. Fully insured? Please consider, on a "fully depreciated" vehicle, they won't pay anything out if it's a total loss. You'll get what KBB (Kelley Blue Book) says.
At that, you could insure it for liability only, then buy house insurance for under 100.00 for the YEAR.
And you have to, MUST check rates at least yearly. They WILL take full advantage otherwise. Put it by your bills, like in a checkbook and refer to it.
Do you know more specifically what the “crazy good has mileage” is? That would be much appreciated!

Hi Shelby! Yes we’ve done the tracking and it’s about 14-16 mpg in the highway and 10-12 in city driving. We have a 2003 Ford E 450 on that Stardust body(which is what gives it the height!)

How exciting of a time for you!!!! Just on the beginning of a great adventure! We actually really love that our engine is diesel! They are made to last! They use and need a lot more oil but that is what makes them much more reliable!

How does keeping all of the windows effect your heating/cooling?
The windows can transmit the outside weather into the bus a bit at times. But we use a custom reflective covering for them that helps a lot with temperature regulation. But having the bug windows will helps warm the bus up very quickly after a chillier night so that's always nice 🌞
I’m way late to the game but did y’all take your shuttle bus to a regular mechanic to get inspected or did you have to go to a big rig/diesel mechanic to get it inspected? Idk if it would be different cause we’re in Canada but curious. I know if you go to a diesel mechanic with a school bus it can be $1,000 + 😩
Hello! It depends on the issue. The engine is common enough that many regular mechanics can do work on it, but if it's something more specific or a bigger fix we tend to take it to a diesel shop if possible !

Hi Karen! We removed all the decals and sanded the whole exterior of the bus, and then just painted! We didn't use tape or anything because we didn't want to create the waste, so our process was pretty straightforward! 😊

How have you went about getting insurance on the shuttle bus?
Hii! Getting insurance was actually a very easy process for us! We waited until the end of the project, changed our title to RV and after sending some pictures to the insurance agent we were insured no problem! Are you converting a bus? If you need more details we can share our insurance agent with you!
Where did you get your ladder for your bus?
From a junkyard! It came from an old RV!
What about insurance costs ?
We used Progressive insured and paid about $90 a month for full coverage!

We didn't think it was possible at first, but we have seen it done before!
