Not sure if you take content suggestions but can you try using “solar wire mesh” to make a moss pole on your channel? It appears to be the exact same thing as the wire hardcloth mesh that you’re using but it comes in a roll already cut 8 inches wide. It’s used to keep birds out of solar panels on roofs. I am really interested in your opinion and to see if it would work better or if it’s just easier. You can also try using a thing called c ring (sometimes called hog ring) pliers instead of zip ties. Thanks!
I found if you add your pole first to the pot then add your soil from the top then add the moss it's much easier. I hope you will try it and see if you like it
That doesn’t work for me because my soil is a soilless chunky mix so all the chunky amendments get all over it drives me crazy. I do exactly what Sydney plant guy does it’s super effective , deff check out his video :)
Beautiful Majestic & Serpens Melissa! They look so pretty on their new poles ❣And yes...I too deliberately go around and look for dried cataphylls to remove. It's almost ASMR for me 😉Also please try and convince hubby to do the repot...it's great to see you together and yes we all want to know how you met etc etc! And Oh my goodness Melissa you're so cute when trying to convince yourself that you 'need' another plant...I'm the same so I totally agree it wouldn't we right going home empty handed🤭 Oh and the mike was perfect. Your editing was entertaining and never too chatty...that's what keeps you real and down to earth 👌🏼
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback so much! I spend a lot of time in editing and hope the videos come out okay but it's hard to know unless someone comments or notices so thank you 🙏 Working on hubby still lol but going to try and make it happen soon!
I live in New Orleans and any time the weather drops below 45-50* I cover my plants with a sheet or frost clothes, usually just in the evenings and over night. Once the sun comes up, I remove them. The only time I keep them covered during the day is if frost hits or it’s under 40*
“No plants until the end of the year” my husband hasn’t laughed that hard in awhile 🙂Also, I’m in Florida and I use frost cloths from Amazon for my outdoor plants. They work really well. Really enjoyed this video. Thank you 🙂
I’m in NC and I was wondering what plant shops do you like to go to when you are visiting? I’m new to houseplants now going on 4 months and I’m in love with all houseplants and need to know what places to shop are the best. 😊 Ok I posted that to soon and watched more. I’m in Clayton so I’m sure I’ve been to all the ones you have. Next time if you haven’t been to Growin Green you should go. It’s awesome!
Hello Melissa. I just happened upon your channel. What caught my attention was having so many moss poles! I use moss poles also for some of my plants. I have enjoyed watching this video and the 31 moss pole video! 🥰🪴 I’m in Colorado. I’ll be bringing plants inside probably in the next 2-3 weeks. I keep all my Tropicals inside. All my succulents and cactus are outside.
Hi there! Thanks for watching!! haha yes, I love moss poles it's so fun having them climb and grow bigger leaves! ☺️ I hope the transition to bringing them back inside goes well for you!
Yeah I'm in Ohio and it's gotten down to the low 60's, high 50's at night so I brought all my indoor plants I took out in. I only have my Boston fern out now
I’ve been watching you for a few weeks now but I had no idea you’re from Raleigh! Logan’s plant shop downtown off of peace street has some beautiful variegated plants a couple of weeks ago when I went. I also love homewood for rare plants, they’re greenhouse is amazing! Atlantic gardens is neat but not my favorite either!
oh yes, I meant to check them out before we moved away but never made it downtown. I never went to Homewood either lol. So many places I miss! The plant shops here just aren't the same :(
Hi Melissa! I love watching your vids of putting plants on moss poles. I was wondering if you would do an update vid of all your moss poles, that'd be great. I'm like you, I'm becoming obsessed w/putting many of my plants on moss poles. It's just so rewarding watching them grow n mature, right? Anywho, thank you for another awesome vid and I'll be looking forward to that moss poles update vid. Thanks!🙏😇
Idk why but at the start with your little song, you suddenly reminded me of Kacey Musgraves! Are you a country singer by chance? 🤣 hehe jk. But anyway thanks for this inspiration. I needed something to get me going to make moss poles right now… way too many aroids on the struggle bus lol
I live in North Iowa ( about 2 hrs south of Minneapolis ) Our estimated first frost date this year is October 1st, but a random frost in mid September isn't unheard of lol. I don't think that will happen this year, but I have to start keeping a very close eye on the weather in about 2-3 weeks. I'll probably have to be bringing my plants in soon where they'll stay until May/June depending on weather. ☹
The better-gro from Amazon was $5.98 now $6.98 the new version same size from what I’ve seen goes up to $15.98 I have bought as many as I could. Haven’t found at Lowe’s or Home Depot as yet. Love your videos YOU’RE AWESOME ,,!👍🏾👏🏾
That the same moss I use because it’s cheap but I’m starting to hate it , it’s so gross with twigs and even seen dead leaves lmao!!! So I got myself that New Zealand moss and OMGOSH!! It’s so so gorgeous and smells great ❤❤
Melissa, another good video. Could I ask a couple of questions about the two props: 1. When "last year" did you chop each (roots grew like that in 9 mos or ??) and 2. Were they in your IKEA cabinet the entire time?? Trying to learn how to be fearless, chopping and propping, like you!
Thank you! Sure! I chopped them up (majestic was one vine and cut into 3 - a top cut, mid and bottom cut) and I cut off the rotted roots so all of this has been the regrowth. I definitely can be lazy to pot up propagations sometimes but I tend to just sit and forget about them while they work on regrowing. I had them in my cabinet the whole time and just wet the moss when it starts getting dry. The Serpens was a top cut and a bottom cut.
Melissa, Do you still use the Fox Farms potting mix in your diy soil mix? I have tried this and noticed that my soil mix with this product does not dry fast enough and I had root rot on my plants. Was just wondering if you still use this brand or something else?
Thank you!! We love Asheville! Been there several times :) We lived in the triangle area for the past 18 years, my husband grew up in NC. I appreciate that but I wouldn't feel right taking a micans from you 🥺
Melissa, can you do a video on Birklin Phil’s? Do you have any of these? I love them so much but they don’t do well for me. Should they be on a pole? You are so knowledgeable about plants and what’s best to be successful.
I have a birkin! It doesn’t grow that fast for me but I really should give it more light. It’s a “self header” so it doesn’t need a moss pole. I have a stake for support in mine. It caught spider mites several months ago when I had them so I ended up chopping the top off 😅 but it’s regrowing. I would recommend a chunky mix and light! They can revert back to a rojo congo 🙃
Hi, it's mycorrhizal fungi and you can buy it on amazon. Here's what I am using: www.amazon.com/dp/B081QF9ZW6/ref=twister_B0BN29CXWM?_encoding=UTF8&th=1
Are you talking about thiccly poles? I get them off amazon :) The wire poles I make I have a DIY tutorial. I have about 30 videos saved in my moss pole playlist that goes into more details! I filmed a lot of poles and their process :) I also have links to everything in my video descriptions! Is there any way you could provide a link to the mycorrhizae that you use? I didn't see it in the description or amazon storefront. hopefully I didn't just overlook it
Is there such a thing as "too early" to start a plant on a moss pole? I have some teeny tiny babies from Botanicaz, an etsy seller in WA state, and I want to get them started asap but don't want to risk hurting them! :) love your videos!
I'm thinking there are 2 factors for the timing of switching to moss poles. One is the stress of the move, and the other is the time waiting for the plant to start climbing. For the stress, I'd think of it as just a repotting. If you think the little plants would undergo too much stress for a repot, I'd probably avoid the moss pole. If the plants were a new purchase, they're probably already quite stressed from the transition to your home, so it may be advisable to delay the pole. Once the plants are used to your environment and become a little more established, they'll probably do better switching over. More roots and leaves allow for quicker recovery. Then for the climb, the quicker your plants get used to the pole switch, the sooner they'll be ready to start growing up the pole. I think the key here is the root system. If the roots are undersized for the moss pole pot, you may spend a while waiting for those to fill out. Smaller roots could also struggle more with the stress, potentially delaying the climb further. There may also be additional maintenance required like keeping the moss moist to encourage aerial roots to attach. There may be a third factor if moss poles are a new thing for you. Some experimentation may be involved with getting the moss pole going which could allow for a greater chance of something going wrong with a plant. Different species react to changes a bit differently. Some could adapt quite ready without problems and do just fine with a more immediate switch. If you're not sure about the plants you have, I'd say it's safer to allow the roots and a couple leaves to develop more, then make the switch. If you're feeling adventurous or curious and the potential of the plant dying isn't too costly, it may be worth just giving it a go and see what happens. I have a tendency to take that approach. If I was a cat, 9 lives wouldn't be enough!
Thank you!! I thought it was a little different lol. We love Asheville! Been there several times :) My husband grew up in NC, but we lived in the triangle area for about 18 years! Thank you! That is so kind but I definitely wouldn't feel right taking a cutting from you 🥺
