I always thought that the reason why baseball didn't have fielding was due to complexity issues. The game was introducing a completely brand new thing to the world of games, and combine that with it wanting to focus on people who had never played a game as well, and I think it would have just been too much at launch. We did later get a more complex game all around in 2008 with Mario Super Sluggers, so I think it was just to avoid alienating people.
Agreeing with this, and in baseball, there's stealing, getting hit with the ball, your foot or any part of your body hitting an active ball (where it's still in play, not returned to pitcher), completely screwing up pitching, so on and so forth, so yeah way too much coding, I think it's nice as is despite how frustrating
The voice lines thing just might be different people working on localizations than the original Japanese version. The announcer likely did dozens of takes for each line, and they jusy picked which ones they wanted

As a kid, i had the 1.01 copy of wii sports, and was used to the animation playing in the beginning of baseball, and recently i picked up a wii and wii sports (since i sold my wii awhile back) and was confused why the animation wasn’t playing at all, turns out i have the 1.00 version now. If you consider doing another episode on unused data, I think you should cover the unused code that has been discovered for this game! ( tcrf.net/Wii_Sports/Unused_Code ), including debug menus and debug text prints. Another interesting thing you might be interested in are the findings on the original sources for some textures from this game and Wii Sports Resort ( twitter.com/B_squo/status/1395821591402098688 ). Basically, the devs owned many stock photo albums that they used as a base to create the textures. That thread shows the ones that have been found so far.
