    legit emotional. the store always had a aura around it that was filled with joy and anticipation from the back seat of my parents vehicle.
    The opportunity of going there with the idea of "you can get whatever you want under $20"

    My mother used to treat me to this place when I made excellent report cards in school when I was tiny. Now here I am, a 40 year old woman tearing up as I attend the funeral of a staple of my childhood. I used to be a Toys R Us kid. Now I'm a Toys R Us orphan. 😢

    That shot of Geoffrey on the road puts a bullet in the heart of my childhood. Damn someone is chopping onions. I loved going to Toys R Us as a kid for both toys but mainly for video games. I remember you had to get those ticket slips for the game on this big wall of all of the latest and older games, and the clerk would go in the back and get you your brand new game. I remember thats how I got games for SNES and N64. Later for xbox it was Gamestop and so on. But as a young kid watching your parent or whoever, let you pull that game slip on the wall of games displayed and bring it to the counter and get your new game were always good memories. There is something truly special about Toys R Us when you were a kid that most kids of the last generation probably didn't get or if they did is over now, and that really sucks. But with the advent of the internet, it's not a shocker it just sucks.

      The great time you are remembering is spending time with your parents and them buying you something you wanted because they loved you. Don’t try and give Toys R’ Us the love and recognition of such wonderful memories that you parents should be receiving instead.

    I remember back when I was younger I would wake up early every Saturday morning with my dad to go to yard sales. I only went because he would always take me to toys r us after a cheap 1 dollar hot wheels. I just recently found all of my cars in my attic going through my old stuff because I’m going to college. My dad isn’t here to witness the happiness and tear that the cars brought to my eyes. I hope one day I could give the cars to possibly my kids to bring happiness to them. R.i.p dad I love you!!

    • @HolyknightVader999
      @HolyknightVader999 6 років тому +9

      I think it was calculated. After all, you don't see these junk toys at the Disney store. Only the best toys there, from Star Wars, to Marvel, to Pixar.
      Toys R'Us didn't die. It was murdered.

    • @HolyknightVader999
      @HolyknightVader999 6 років тому +3

      +woooudo
      I kept thinking about it when I compared the junk SW toys I kept finding in Toys R'Us with the high-quality toys I found in the Disney Store. In the Disney Store, you got collectible action figures, nice saber replicas, die-cast figures that were limited time only, while in Toys R'Us, you got cheap plastic shit that can't even pose properly, and outside of the odd expensive toy, most of them are one-gimmick junk that kids with class would be embarrassed to be seen with. The Prequel toys sold like hotcakes, same for the Original Trilogy and Expanded Universe toys in the Black Series. But this new slew of toys that mostly have poor articulation are barely touched, whether I go to the Toys R'Us, or to Target, or anywhere that sells toys. But the Disney Store toys kept selling well, like with the SW toys that fly off the shelves quickly. Heck, I even recently bought a limited-edition Darth Vader action figure from them.
      Then I remembered that Toys R'Us is a competitor for the Disney store and a middleman for Disney's SW toys. And of course, companies love cutting the middle man just so they can sell their stuff themselves. That's why gaming companies like EA and Valve want to get rid of Gamestop so they can sell their stuff directly to people online and get all the profits. By getting rid of these toy retailers, Disney can expand its stores and get people to buy stuff directly from them.
      So I thought to myself, why isn't Disney trying to save the toy retailers that pass out their toys? Then I compared the toys from the Disney store to the low-level crap being passed around by the other toy stores in regards to Star Wars and Marvel, and I realized the truth. The junk toys were dumped at other stores, while Disney kept the best Star Wars toys for themselves...........

    • @HolyknightVader999
      @HolyknightVader999 6 років тому +2

      +woooudo
      It's not just Disney anymore. It's every company that wants to sell things directly. They don't want middlemen like Toys R'Us or Gamestop chewing up part of the profits. They want to sell things in their own stores or online. I've seen this as far back as 2010, where new copies of Mass Effect 2 had very valuable free DLC that people who bought used copies have to pay money for. They literally chopped off part of the game so that people who bought used copies, which profits stores like Gamestop, have to pay extra money directly to the company via DLC. This was done to force people to buy new copies or buy digital copies, which profited EA specifically.
      Toys R'Us is just the latest casualty in this war between companies and retail stores. And if the current commercial atmosphere is any indication, it won't be the last.

    • @HolyknightVader999
      @HolyknightVader999 6 років тому +1

      +woooudo
      Their leaders were idiots who paid little attention to the stores because they spent every last dime of profit paying off the people they bought the store chain from. But still, people don't do anything because they don't think anything is going wrong.
      That's why I've gone and decided to support media outside of the west instead, like anime. Been on a Gundam binge lately. Did you know MSG: Char's Counterattack came out in 1988, and it has better animation than most animated shows today?
      Also, I've gone back to old Star Wars Legends stuff that was cool before Disney came knocking in, such as KOTOR and the original Battlefront.

    I remember when I was a kid and Toys R Us was like a wonderland. The one I went to had endless shelves of video games and Star Wars figures, so it was the best of both worlds for me. Back then, Star Wars merchandise took over 2 entire aisles. Today, it can't even take up one fourth of a single shelf. Reality is often a cruel mistress.

    I came into the world in the early 2000's, but my real world where I could always be myself was Toys R us. My dad would always walk me in and watch me as I tried to get in the little cars. Overtime, he'd watch me grow up. I remember going there at night as I watched the bright lights turn on. I'd go there almost every weekend. I'd look at the books and for some reason, the cute baby isle. I'd go there for fun and enjoyment. Even as a 13 year old, I still cry as I watch this place shut down. When I go by MY Toys R us, I look through the glass and see nothing but shelves which held up my childhood. I'd love the nice feeling of walking through that store. I even miss the bathroom. I don't want to grow up, I don't. I like to think that when I die, Since they say that you see your life flash in two seconds, I hope that I see Toys R us and all of the good times... If Heaven is real, which I believe is real, I hope to watch from above if I make it there and wish to see Toys R us open up again... Never will I forget about these wonderful years. For any one you adults or children younger than me, Please don't grow up.

    When I was a kid, my family was not well to do to get me anything from Toy 'R' Us. it was a nice place to let me roam around and see new toys, imagine that I own them. Always wanted to strive to one day grow up, have kids, bring them to Toy 'R' Us and buy them something nice, something I never had a chance to experience as a kid. Guess I don't have the chance ever again.

Before kids wanted to play with their favorite characters, now 6 year olds are waiting to buy the newest phone. I remember going there when I was little boy and getting another amazing toy. I still have some of those amazing toys. I'm 12 now and a couple of months ago I went to ToysRus and seeing the shelves empty, it was hard to see that. It's sad to see it go for me because kids can't enjoy a toy store like we got to when we were kids. I have a lot of great memories shopping at Toys R Us, Kay Bee, and Kiddie City with my brother and sister. Now they are all gone. So many Nintendo games, Ninja Turtles, board games, Hot Wheels, Legos, Masters of the Universe, Star Wars, coloring books, Fisher Price toys... my sister would get Barbie dolls, My Little Ponys, Sailor Moon stuff (I'm happy you mentioned her btw!! We LOVE Sailor Moon!!) I remember preordering Super Mario Bros 3 and needing to get a rain check to get it. We'd always find the best NES games there. I feel like Toys R Us got the premiere titles first during the 8 bit era. Those displays with the yellow and white tickets... the high end merchandise behind glass... those cheap Halloween costumes... I could go on and on!! Though the Toys R Us I knew as a kid died in 1997 (The set up drasticly changed around that time), I am sad to see it go. If I am ever blessed with kids, I feel bad that I can't give them the experience of going to a Toy Store the way I did as a kid.

      I agree. I used to go to Toys R us , Kiddie City and KB in the 80s, they were great, especially in the 8bit days. I was in there a few years ago, and it just wasn't the same, at all.

    Perhaps my most favorite memory was when I took my son to my local TRU when he was almost 1 year old back in 2005, and I got him one of those large plastic push cars with the handle that came waist high that he could ride in. I use to push him all over the neighborhood in that thing until he got too big for it. Then I did the same for my daughter. Ever memory after, going there with my kids was an adventure. Even when we were hurting for money, it was nice to just go there and let the kids be kids. As much as I loved TRU as a kid, then as a young adult. It was probably as a parent that I cherished the store the most. Intertwining those memories and experiences with the lives my kids as they grew up. I remember times when money was so tight, I had to wait until I got extra cash from my employer paying me for all the sick time I never took, just to buy Christmas presents a week before Christmas.

I got so many amazing presents for both christmases and birthdays here. I got my very first costume, bayley wwe figure, skylanders imaginators, i just had everything. So many good memories when i walked into toys r us. I really miss it. Hopefully the rumours of it coming back is true. If it does, i will try to visit it asmuch as i can. The sad thing is, i never got to say goodbye. I am 14 now, i was 11 when it shut down. I will never grow up, ill always be a toys r us kid. It was a magical place. There was millions, says geoffrey. Clearance sales always make me feel morose. Watching a store go out of business is just a very sobering feeling, and this video is probably one of the hardest hitting. I never went to Toys R Us much as a kid or an adult, but knowing how much joy it brought to other people makes this hard to watch all the same.

    Once upon a time, there was a seven year old girl, running into toys r us with a big smile on her face.
    It was her seventh birthday, and her grandmother took her to buy a birthday present. After a long time of walking, the little girl found a princess doll, almost her size. She immediately told her grandma that she wanted it.
    The girl and her doll did everything together. The little girl took the doll to festivals, restaurants, family meeting, everywhere. They switched clothes and had tea parties.
    The doll made the little girl’s childhood special.
    Now, do you see that tearing 14 year old in the corner? See that naked, broken old doll? These are the little girl and her doll, after 7 years. The girl might have stopped playing with dolls, and the doll’s clothes won’t fit anymore, but the memories are here forever.
    This is me.
    This is my childhood.
    Thanks for making it special for me and so many other kids, toys r us.

    I still remember my first trip from when I must have been about two feet tall. I just couldn't believe such an amazing place existed. ALL toys, ALL of it! From that point on, it was the thing my parents could dangle over my head to control me, like Santa Claus but in the form of a building. I'm thinking back to all the cool toys I got from there. One of the best was when I got Donatello, those original Turtles figures were REALLY good.

    My earliest memory of Toys R Us is of my parents taking me there when the original Star Wars movies were coming out to buy Star Wars action figures. I'd return over the years for He-Man, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Ghostbusters. I remember how big that giant GI Joe Air Craft Carrier box looked on the shelf. I remember the giant wall row of board games along one of the store walls where you could find every board game imaginable including Ouiji Boards courtesy of Parker Brothers.
    Toys R Us was the first place where I got all my early video games. In the earlier days of gaming they used to have aisles and aisles where they'd hang laminated game packaging all along the walls (Back in the 80's Toys R Us also sold PC games for a time.) There was no internet and gaming magazines were in their infancy, so all you really had to go on when you were choosing a game was the box art and ad description (unless you knew somebody who had the game). I'd spend so much time walking the aisles inspecting each and every box display. One time I chose the Commodore 64 Alien game based on the movie, probably because of the cool movie poster box art. (Turned out to be a nearly impossible game, especially for a little kid, but there was no way to have known.)
    I remember discovering the Nintendo Entertainment System for the very first time at Toys R Us. I could see the console box through the window of that little fortress where they would lock up all the games when I was standing in the check out line with my parents. I remember seeing the screen shot of Super Mario Brothers that was on the back of the box that showed a question block hovering in the air and wondering what it was and what it all meant. (Mario was unknown back then outside of the original arcade game where a red guy and a green guy beat up turtles in a sewer.) I remember going to Toys R Us one night as a kid wiggling my loose tooth and my parents buying me the first Castlevania for the NES and me trying to read the game manual in the car in the dim light of the parking lot lamps.
    I remember how fun it was to go to Toys R Us when gaming was starting to first get big and one of the earliest battles was between these two new 16 bit systems, the Sega Genesis and the Turbografx-16. (The SNES hadn't even launched at that time.) They set up this display behind glass with both systems in the window along with TV's that would play continuous loops of advertising for both systems. I can remember just standing there for like 40 minutes watching this new footage of Keith Courage, Legendary Axe, Bloody Wolf, Bonk's Adventure, Splatterhouse, Devil's Crush, Altered Beast, Ghouls N' Ghosts, Last Battle, Phantasy Star II, Space Harrier II, etc. cut in between shots of xxxtreme, totally radical dudes, lightning, and shredding guitar that was mandatory for gaming ads back then.
    Lots of good Toys R Us memories. Sad to see it disappear. Wish I could have shared the same kind of experiences with my nephews and niece.

    I remember when I was 3 and got my first toys R us toy, that was 7Years ago.
    I got my best friend a toys R Us toy 8monthes before it closed... It was a whole different as a young child.
    Every year, when I get money. A doll for 90$ seems cheap comparing to the other stores..
    It was a delight to my eyes!
    My sister she still has a toy! But. I don't know if I really will get over this.
    This business was at the top at the childrens heart ❤. We enjoy these so much!
    My dad really liked bringing us here to play and watched the toys. I don't really know if I will ever feel this.
    When this opens again, I will buy anything for child collection.
    Mom always bought for my friends and cousins and it was amazing company..
    I loved all the plushies and I was smiling all my childhood.
    When it was closed I felt like crying.
    I don't know if I'll ever get over my childhood
    It was the happiest place.. I have ever been to this was the most colourful and prettiest place I've ever been to.
    I now don't play with toys. I gave them all to my sister, before the store closed, huge mistake I can't take it back anymore.

    In Arizona ToysRUs was a late comer. I didn't go to ToysRUs as a kid, except for when the family went to California on vacation. It was extra special since it was so much larger than anything at home. They had toys there that I didn't see anywhere else. In Phoenix we had a lot of Mom & Pop type toy stores, and FAO Schwartz , that was the store I asked my Grandmother to take me to with regularity.
    After seeing your video this morning, I realized the end of ToysRUS is an end to an era. The end of the toy store as a local retail shop. Sure you have Target, Walmart, and a very few specialty stores, but it's not the same thing as being able to go to a store that is just toys, and the latest and greatest toys. You can pick up the box, or play with a display.
    I remember a small toy store in Phoenix from the 1970's, it was called Scholar's, I got a Kenner Landspeeder there(I still have it). The owner was a very nice man, I remember him saying to me, "If there is anything your looking for. I can pick it up at the warehouse". It wasn't his warehouse, it was a wholesaler. I really wanted to go there, it would have been a paradise to a 10 year old kid.
    With the end of ToysRUs goes the end of the local toy store, I can only think of three places in Phoenix that I would call a toy store. They are all in other parts of town, and they carry mostly collectible toys. Nothing I would give to a kid to play with, just another sad dust collector.
    Now that I think about it, I cannot even remember the last thing I bought at a ToysRUS. Man, that's sad.

It was so much fun to browse about the video game aisles as well as always checking out the latest Super Soakers or Nerf blasters. I can still remember seeing a Sega CD in a display case with Sonic CD. That was 1993 and the whole setup looked so neat to 10-year old me. I know this is an old video but thought I would comment any way. If we want to get back to the glory days of spending your youth watching cartoons on Saturday morning & then in the afternoon going to hang out with the local group of neighbourhood kids & chatting about what you saw on television, & then doing the same on Monday when back at school. Then we need to start promoting the idea of paying stay at home parents a wage. When I was a kid as I got older there was less & less toylines based around cartoons & more & more based around films witch is more risky for both the toy company & for consumer as these properties don't last as long. The success of the original Star wars toys is the exception not the rule . company's can't push toy lines based on cartoons. Because they can't find that mass audience any more like they used to on Saturday so it's to risky. If Toys R Us financial trouble had happened back in the 80s then they would probably have survived because there was more reliable brands. There isn't any more because there are hardly any toylines based on cartoons & the one's that do exist have a much more difficult time trying to become big in today's climate. The way to go is to go back to having stay at home parents. It would also help with lots of other issues in life that aren't toy related.
