My ML-1 arrived on Wednesday, needs a set-up ( bit of fret buzz etc) but other-wise awesome. This is an outstanding piece of kit. If you are like me and have played other top 'brands' and are dubious, don't be. The build quality and variety of tones available from the 3-way with the coil-tap and standard Chapman pickups is outstanding which was a real surprise and far and above other makes above this price range. If you want to give your playing a kick in the arse/ass etc..., try one of these!

The finish on a guitar changes how the guitar as a whole resonates. The pickups only convey that tone to the amp. While finish might affect tone less than other physical components of a guitar, it does change it.

An electric guitar is a subtractive system, somewhat like the traditional Fender/Vox/Marshall tone stack. Every species of wood has a particular resonance, and every aspect of a guitar's construction subtracts from the wood's resonance (this is why acoustic guitars can be crafted to have a particular "voice"). While the pickups only sense the vibration of the strings, the vibration of the strings is affected by the vibration of the guitar as a whole.

  • @MudShadow

Electric guitar magnectic pickups produce sound from the "metal" strings vibrating. Guitar body resonation can effect the length of time a string will vibrate for, but it cannot effect the tone because there's no additional form of metal interference to effect the actual tone of the metal string.Play your guitar normally, then hold the guitar against something such as a wooden table then see if the table has changed the tone of the guitar. The most you can expect is sustain and volume variation.

The differences are almost negligible. One quarter turn on the volume or input gain controls on a guitar amp will make ten times more difference.

I think there's a video in witch he compares the tone of ml-1 natural finish with a ml-1 with a lacker finish. It really seems a little different(my ears are not that trained). It might be just my impression or there might be a factor other than the finish altering the tone. Having a third unaccounted for variable influencing final results is a common mistake when getting to a conclusion.

pickups on an electric guitar definitely can have microphonics, some more so than others, but try tapping on your pickup, or talking into it... you'll soon discover microphonics. therefore your pickups are also picking up the sound of the body. why else would a hollow body guitar like a 335 sound so much different from a les paul?
