  • So it's time to tackle some strava segments on my mountain bike! Most of these are on very bumpy gravel or grass paths. So a MTB is definitely the right tool for the job. Let's see if I can get top 10!
    0:00 Segment 1
    5:20 Segment 2
    9:44 Segment 3
    10:50 Segment 4

    KOM Hunter!
When you really want to have a higher chance at these segments: get rid of your nutrition on the bottom of the segment and return to it after the attempt.
Get a gravel bike this will most likely be faster. Adjust your tire pressure to the conditions.
When you get on tarmac accelerate immediately rather than holding a steady effort.

Good idea about chucking the nutrition at the beginning! If the segments were steeper and longer I definitely would've done that.
Yeah the gravel bike would probably be a bit better. I have a road bike that accepts large gravel bike tyres, so it would be interesting how much quicker it is!

What do you enjoy more road biking or mountain biking ?

Probably road biking, although I've not spent as much time on the mountain bike yet so maybe in the future I'll change my mind 😂

Thank you for giving this video a sweet title. Would have been 80% as entertaining if it was tilted "can I get 4 top 10's"

Hi Jarrod - bit curious where the headwind data is sourced from .... surely your Garmin cannot measure that? Also... the trees and plant branches would seem to contradict the data as (for eg) start of the 2nd KOM run, it says 19kmh headwind yet the plants and branches i see are all stationary indicating next to no wind. Not a criticism just curious! Maybe Strava adds in the reported prevailing winds after the run is completed?

Good question! It's from a garmin connect IQ app called 'WindField'. It uses your mobile phone to check the wind direction and then sends that to your garmin. I'm not too sure if it's accurate, but being a data junkie I had to try it out. I do think it was over estimating on this particular day, as the weather in the UK is notoriously fickle. I suppose until someone invents a way to measure windspeed directly from the bike this is probably the best data we'll be able to get. But still, it's quite fun to be able to see the wind info, and adds another excuse for those slow rides 😂

@@JMower ok cheers for the info. to do 30kmh on a tarmac stretch at the end of one of your runs on a MTB with nobbly tyres was quite impressive. Nobbly tyres really have quite high rolling resistance. Good effort! also very nice scenery in the Braintree area!

After a couple of rides you will start flying through the corners and smash the kom's. Taking the mtb to china? Any nice trails over there?

I hope so! Definitely just a case of slowly building up the confidence!
I actually arrived back a few days ago and of course the mtb came with me! I'm not too sure about trails, but I hope there's some good ones around
