I've seen many comparison images and videos on the internet, but it none of them do justice compared to when you're actually playing in game. Units and buildings show a lot more meticulously detail then ever before, the terrain looks sharp and crisp and the real time lighting effects almost gives the game a new coat of paint. Overall I think Blizzard did a really great job of preserving the classic Starcraft aesthetic while making it feel more exciting and fresh to play.
best part is, people being confused as to what has changed is what blizzard intended they did an excellent job refining every texture and model to be extremely high quality while maintaining the same old art style only thing i'm not that happy about are some portraits, they took away some of that atmosphere and mystery from terran and protoss
100% agree. What I like most about this is when I play I feel like I am playing what I did in highschool. Then I can press F5 and see the original to see just how much went into remastering this. Plus, the bugs and pathing issues of this old game add alot of charm to this remaster.
This is what I said to friends who asked how it looked and played. It will be like you remember it. Until you press F5 and see what used to actually be. I think they did a great job enhancing a 19 year old game to what I remember. It retains the nostalgia of my favorite game while staying the same.
For many of the inevitable autists in the comment section: This is supposed to be refreshed for modern PC's, with modern features like matchmaking, not a remake. And what's more important the game has to be exactly the same as it was, including all the "bugs".
Blizzard team: Oh this guy defend us ;D we give you the entire saga for free my dear customer. Mom of gongal: Wa....ke....up.....WAKE UP GONGAL!!!! gongal: Mom why you wake me up? gongal: ...................... gongal:..........That was just a dream :( Mom of gongal: ROFL
The autism is on the other foot here. Any normal person takes "remaster" as "oh, they're going to update the game to modern standards and release it again". It takes an autist to think "remaster, not to be confused with remaking a game you stupid normies, is when you keep the same out-dated engine but update the resolution and a few other features that really don't matter". That being said, I really didn't expect much from this remaster after the giant dropped ball that was the Nova mission packs.
And the netcode is still dirty and lag is still rampant online. If they'd put some effort into fixing that, that would've been great, but this is more like a graphics MOD than a true remaster.
wide screen 16:9 ratio definitely shows more real estate in screen vs 4:3, you get to see more, a little advantage if the other player is playing in 4:3.
Its a remaster, not a remake. Changing the graphics to 3D would require changing the engine, changing the engine would change the gameplay. Changing the gameplay defeats why people loved it in the first place.
Changing engine wouldn't necessary mean changing gameplay, if a designer can abstain from playing around and making it more nowadays like and just stay on course of remaking just the same. I mean, there's noting much to change in gameplay, it's the same in SC2, just the animation is better, and obviously graphics. Look up the Remake and Remaster differences and what they initially mean. It doesn't necessary mean a change of gameplay, it's up to the developers themselves how they approach the "remake".
I've played the original starcraft and its brood war expansion so many times that I'm actually kind of put off by how detailed the models are now. Don't get me wrong, they look fantastic, but they pop out too much, which can serve as a distraction during gameplay. This can be bad because even a small, miniscule second of time wasted can mean a lot in Starcraft, especially if you're playing competitively. The low-res sprites actually made them stand out less, meaning that players are focused more on the management of units and thus on the gameplay. Additionally, I liked how the low-res sprites allowed my mind to fit in what I thought were the details of the ships and buildings and units; having them be this detailed and colored kind of removes that imaginative element, at least to me.
I kinda liked the mineral deposits more before, they had more realistic detail to them. Some preferences but certain things have a more robust, battle worn look on them before the remaster. Though overall, yeah the remaster is nice. I got it on the Black Friday sale lol.
One thing to note: Old art is created for CRT screens. They look worse on LCD. These comparisons are not exactly correct. When artists knew they were creating for CRT, they created according to the properties of CRTs. CRTs bleed colors for example to the next dot. This blended colors between dots. They also had dots, not pixels. They are different. It was designed on pixels to be represented on CRT dots. But when you take those pixels and put on an LCD, they stay as pixels. This makes most of the art created for CRTs look worse than they were supposed to do. If they knew they would display on an LCD, they would create accordingly.
Looks a lot better when you aren't viewing it through UA-cams compression. The 4K sprites really pop ingame, especially if you zoom in. They did this remaster perfectly, it still feels 100% like StarCraft wonky mechanics and all (looking at you horrible-pathfinding Dragoons and Goliaths!) If you play the game and press F5 you can swap betweeen classic graphics and remastered and it is night and day.
Remastered looks like a game for a mobile or tablet kind of devices :D it's just...clearer picture, and better effects, and the support for modern technology, such as wide screen and resolution.

Im really dissapointed that 21:9 widescreen is not supported
This is 4K I hope. Because I play it on 1080p and I don't have such a crisp definition. Nor I can zoom such close. And also some buildings are pixelated. Eg supply depot, starport.
What I like to know is, do we have modern gameplay stuff like hot keys or rally SCVs to a mineral field or gas chamber. Like the Homeworld remastered which I heard introduced new mechanics to the old game...
They also made the game free. People playing the original game can play with people on the remaster. This was 100% a graphical and sound update for people who still enjoy this game competitively. In no way required.
They added custom hotkeys. X3C has no idea what he's talking about. You cannot rally SCVs to a mineral field though. They fixed command latency issue on multiplayer so it's a bit of a stretch to say they didn't do a thing...
Jim Raynor's new portrait is way uglier than in the classic version and we can miss the 21:9 resolutions that already worked great in HotS - I have no idea why it isn't available in StarCraft Remastered Edition? But everything else looks way better in the new look, so if someone loved the original SC, they'll surely love it with the advanced but still nostalgic style graphics. If someone thinks it's still not good enough, they should just head to check out the graphics of StarCraft 2.
Well, what I've seen so far looks great (at least in my opinion). Like others already wrote, it looks like I remember it. The only things that I don't like are the crystals (they look like comic style now) and the Protos command base, it is maybe a little bit to glowy (if this is a word).
I wish old Star Wars force commander Star Wars legends computer games get remaster including Star Wars shadow of empire or Star Wars knight of the republic get remaster in future!?
The worst thing about actual SC1 (free to play now, but NOT remastered version) have worse graphic than it had had before (I mean before even a single tought about remastering SC1). This is a fatal step from Blizzard in my opinion. "We are giving to you SC1 for free, but with worse graphics than before." It's pathetic.
Am I the only one not buying it? I really don't mind the original graphic. There's nothing wrong with it. The new graphic update is too cheesy. I would however buy the remaster if there is new campaign content.
as a fan of the series, this remastered bring nostalgia feels. 3 bunker rush, zerg blitz rush, such a good time. Its not much if compare to game graphic standard this day, keeping old style are good thing more plus point if they add more detail texture. The shadow and lighting effect are lacking. That's why is look bland. Hope they keep improve it !
-and that's a good thing. The units must be immediately recognizable and the terrain must not be distracting when you're trying to keep track of so many units on screen doing things at once.
Im kinda on the fence about this, graphic wise. The remaster is good and its not so over done that it looks like a whole new game. but ive never played it so i feel like it could look better. opinions of people that care is needed lol
Now i know why these old rts games is getting remastered/reforged/definitive edition (starcraft, warcraft, age of empires, command and conquer red alert 1, /? Battle realms being online?/ ) 1. They try to delay the succeeding versions (wc4, sc3, red alert 2:yr 2, aoe4,battle realms 2 corruption of lotus) 2. They are milking money from nostalgic old gamers back in the 90s. And integrate it in the next generation + 4k graphics. 3. They will remaster the following versions of these games. (sc broodwar, wc3 ft, ra2 & ra2yr, hoping for battle realms wotw) another milking.
So??? No one cares thats why we buying them. Also there is more to it, some of these games run on older pcs and software that is no longer supported and no longer available so its also about making them playable and accessible for most who no longer have such hardware or software. so yeah =:P
It's something of a labor of love, a game from 1998 that is still popular and played and patched. This allows them to get some additional revenue to support working on it. It's a $15 update that is optional, and the original version is free and updated to run properly on modern computers. It holds up much more nicely on modern day screens which is nice. I mean.....some games want $15 out of you to get a few costumes. Starcraft and Starcraft Remastered keep the community together and anyone can play against each other no matter what version. Compare that to $40 map packs that divide the player community on other games. CNC collection is two games and their expansions for $20, and no doubt remaking the graphics took some hard work. Don't underestimate how much time and money working on games takes. None of this looks like greed or trying to shake money out of us. They'll go on sale also if you prefer to wait. $10 for SCR sometimes.
Is it me or StarCraft 1 really played harder than StarCraft 2. Everything isn't healed, repaired automatically. Just look back on those tougher day, dunno why I still tried to play it.

christals are a bit off, too blue, not transparent, but theyve made superb job nevertheless
Best part is there's a mod that ports the original and Brood War campaign into StarCraft 2 so this remaster is pointless and inferior lol.

Yeah everything looks good in our memory until we actually go back and play it... And start to see the jaggies and lack of widescreen support.
@Ionor Rea's Tech Evolution Archive Yes, the reason is that it's not a 3D remake, they just made new HD sprites.
The minerals and pylons, though... Stop, change it back!
It looks awesome, but at some points I still prefer old classic version, like the marines.
