Irn Bru was Founded in Falkirk, Scotland by Robert Barr in 1875, it was initially sold as an 'aerated water' which is how soft drinks were known back then, Robert's son Andrew launched the drink in 1901 under the name 'Strachan's Brew'

When you said Strachan my brain automatically converted it to 'strawn' as that is how the popular Australian vocalist Shirley Strachan was pronounced.
Then I did a little digging and found that Strachan is also a legitimate pronunciation. I guess strawn is the devolution of Strachan in the same way wooster shire is the devolution of Worcester Shire.

Hi Amanda, I fully agree with you and you don't have to like it. As a child I loved it and would drink nothing else but as an adult I think its flavoured sugar water with fizz. My childhood memory is a a drink with a more distinctive flavour but now I think its week and insipid. Some of the comments suggest drinking it cold but we never had that opportunity so maybe thats why it tasted better and cold suppresses certain flavours which is why lager beers are refrigerated as they taste horrible if warm

Makes you wonder if it is true that is was invented in 1889 in New York. Maybe Andrew Barr went to New York and had a drink and liked it and somehow got his hands on the recipe and then made it appear it was his invention. Does say SECRET RECIPE from 1901. I didn't know you lived and worked in The Channel Islands Amanda. What was your job, and how long did you live there?

Dr Pepper!?! It's fizzy medicine. Have you tried snails? They're an indelicacy. Also, oysters are uninteresting, but the creme de la creme of food to avoid is... tripe. Look in the OED under 'revolting'. It just says: see 'tripe'.
