If I can figure out a way to fix that tab bond, I’ll definitely show it. I’ve had some minor success by cutting into the cable at an angle and then dragging a soldering iron (with solder) across it.

In many cases you can successfully reattach the bond contacts by using a hot bar. Besides the contact surfaces being a little bit sticky themselves, there's adhesive between the contact surfaces which is activating when heated to safely keep the ribbon in place. There are temperature-regulated soldering irons that have large bar-shaped tips to put heat onto a large surface. That would be the best-controlled approach but also the most expensive. The edge of a laundry iron might also do the job as you don't need excessive heat, only around 180°C or so. If you are really careful you can even do this reattachment while the LCD is being powered so you can immediately see the success.

Very informative video. Have a similar issue, when watching the TV for 2-4 hours, a entire column 2" wide will draw itself top to bottom. I am assuming it is due to a heat related issue. This is an ancient TV, one of the original Hatachi 42 HD plasma tv's. 2006. Turn it off, let it cool down and its fine again for another 2 to 4 hours. Had it apart to replace the power board a few years back.

How about warming the ribbon connection with a heat gun and applying pressure as it cools (one half, then the other, to avoid dislodging)? Might that soften the adhesive enough to re-establish the connection (even for solder)?

I have a 50inch webos powered rca, I was having horrible distorted image and lines.i unplugged the right ribbon cable, and a had half a screen white and the other with 90 mostly clear image. I did the tape method on ribbon cable and the distortion went away along with most of the lines. No matter how I taped the cables the lines were there. I replaced the tcon board and the lines a lot less visible (95%) repaired now. I wonder if my problem is more the ribbon cable/connection?

Thank-you for your TV repair videos. It allowed me to mostly fix my 75" QLED Samsung. TV was cycling from on to off. Replaced the power board. But still have a single multicolor vertical line. Have cleaned several times the the T-con ribbon cable connectors plus done resets, made sure software was updated and line appears on all inputs. So I am thinking the Main/T-con board got damaged when the power board faulted. Does that make sense?

Excellent video! Thanks for all the information! I do have an idea though. Have you tried dragging the soldering iron on the flex cable connection to the board? That's actually how you fix vertical lines on a Game Boy screen. If you do it for short periods of time, the flex should be able to handle the heat.

It is also recommended when using this method
to overlay some PRINTER paper between the
polymer flex ribbon cable and the iron.
This reduces the RISK of damaging the cable.
Uf one has or can obtain some thin TEFLON
sheet - that would be even better -
It has worked well for me - and the BAR attachment
I use is made from BRASS
ANY ENGINEERING WORKSHOP CAN EASILY MAKE ONE

Please!! NOTE!! there IS a big difference between 70% Isopropyl alcohol and 93 to 99% IPA.. ONLY use 93% (or higher) on electronics. 70% is... 30% water!!! This type WILL damage electronics!
I've schooled, worked with and owned an electronic / computer sales / service company (50+ yrs.. ) I'm not crowing, just pointing out & agreeing with your choice of 93% IPA & pointing out something that might have escaped some viewers.

A big thank you! My 2017 LG TV recently developed horizontal lines across the bottom third with some parts of the image from the top third repeated at the bottom. I isolated the side that had the issue and taped the first 8 pins and the picture was perfect. I left it as such and I can't tell any difference. Should I leave it or try to reduce the lines blocked? Also this TV seems to have the t-con built into the main board. I don't mind replacing the board if that will make for a better fix. Thanks again. Your content is very useful.

Would using vinegar on the strip maybe dissolve the corrosion, or would that dissolve the bond between the ribbon? Also could hot air or a heat gun maybe rebond it? Or would that melt the ribbon?

    • @FrugalRepair
      @FrugalRepair  Рік тому +2

I don't know what vinegar would do to the adhesive or the ribbon. I don't think you would want to put something acidic on a pcb anyway. Good thought on heat, I've not had success applying heat to these tv tab bonds so it's possible it could work. I would try to use something more like a soldering iron than a heat gun.

VINEGAR is Acetic Acid - and is corrosive.
There is a paste available - most often used by
Jewelers and watchmakers to remove corrosion
from watches - that have been water damaged.
One can imagine the intricate mechanical parts
in an expensive watch - and removing corrosion
      requires special techniques.
The paste is not exactly low cost - BUT one does
not need to use much and not very often -
so a small container won't break the BANK.
I don't have it in front of me right now so I cannot
      recall what it is called.
I would recommend watching some Watch repair
videos - and soon enough you will discover what
      the paste is called.
Once the corrosion is removed with the paste -
the area can be washed /cleansed with a little
      amount of IPA

@@FrugalRepair The vertical line issue presented here is very similar to an issue that occurs on game boy screens. The fix there is to apply heat onto the ribbon using a soldering iron.

Watch my videos on fixing with tape for horizontal lines. It’s easier to correct than vertical lines.

You mentioned lines going away when the tv warms up. What if you have the opposite problem where the thick bands show up once the tv has been on for about 15 seconds?

    • @FrugalRepair
      @FrugalRepair  2 місяці тому +1

You mean you have a good picture and in 15 seconds or so, the problems show up? That still sounds like a heat related issue and hopefully you can fix it with some non-conductive material under the metal bracket to put some gentle pressure on that tab bond. You can try turning down the LED brightness to something like 10% and see if the tv lasts longer (less heat in the tv). Or you can put a fan on the tv with the cover off and see if it lasts longer to isolate the problem as a heat issue.

I've got vertical lines too and looks like there was some liquid ingress right where those ribbons enter the LCD itself. I don't see how I can clean there but I'm sure it's what's caused the lines as the ingress is right around where the lines are

if alcohol doesnt work, try wd40 and a paint brush instead. it has softer bristles and will will easily go in tight spaces. DO NOT GET WD40 ON THE ACTUAL SCREEN, IT WILL CHEW INTO THE ADHESIVES AND RUIN THE PANEL. a drop or 2 on the driverboard on the rusty spot will be just fine.

Done factory reset, hard reset, recovery it’s still the same. Have you encounter this before and is there any solution to that? Thanks

I think it's a new screen on this one🙁 haven't tried a tcon board or like on some videos changing some dud chips along the LCD strip, but I had luck on a Philips 50inch. It was a different issue no picture at all just wide white strip down the screen, I took out both ribbons and cleaned then put back and hey presto, so far it's come back once and I didn't fancy opening again so I just unplugged for a while and woo hoo it's working so I've stuck it on my bedroom wall, now don't know what to do with the 65inch Samsung. Anyone have a screen for sale haha might have to buy a working one to swap parts and see if it's the LCD, have a great day thanks for asking I nearly forgot about that TV set

My Vizio TV works fine for a while but everything just turns into dancing colors (depends on what image signal is) after awhile. Then in need to turn my TV off and on again. Then it works for a while with good picture until a few minutes later when it bleeds out to dancing colors again.

You mentioned that the orientation of the lines matters. But what if I've had *both* horizontal and vertical lines? My display developed horizontal lines over the image, as shown in your earlier videos where you tackled the timing sync. But then the next day the display suddenly turned into coloured vertical lines/bands with the proper image being completely gone making the display unusable. So right now, it just has vertical bands, but I know there were horizontal lines yesterday. What kind of problem would this indicate?

    • @FrugalRepair
      @FrugalRepair  4 місяці тому

If you have done the isolation technique I showed in the tape video then I would suspect a bad panel or tcon board. There is a possibility also, that you have a short to ground on your driver board that's causing the weirdness.

it was my mistake. At first, it just had a frequent restart, otherwise normal. So I unpacked tv for sure that it's cause of the backlight was really broken or not. then I will order to replace. But after finished assembling and open tv. it is show many colors and a line like a crack in the center of the screen, the restart symptom is still be same Today,I try to open it and take a picture, it becomes black screen, with a bright cracked line in the center of screen.

It’s possible any issue could happen if you are talking about cracked or lifting solder connections under a chip. Those usually would be found on the cpu on the main board. I tried to cover the typical reasons for vertical lines in the video.

I have a UE50TU8072UXXH samsung TV. Not used for almost three years.
We began to use it recently and suddenly it can't start up.
1-The standby red light keeps going on and off.
2- The back lights keep going on and off within seconds.
3- The output voltages that go from the power supply to the main board are 27 volts instead of 13 volts.(I don't know why).
    My questions are:
1-If I replace the power supply ( NB4401054E), will the issue be fixed?
2- Is it possible that the panel is damaged?
Please note that If I disconnect the ribbon that goes to the panel the back lights turn on permanently.
Thank you in advance for your kind response.
