I’ve been listening to a dozen versions of this for over 50 years. To date, my favorite version has always been Yvonne Elliman from the 1973 film, followed by Agnetha Faltskog singing it in Swedish. Hold my beer. Sara Bareilles blew me away. She just crushes this. She is so talented. Wow.
I agree! Yvonne owned the role for 45 years but Sara owns it now. She was also probably amazing as the Baker’s Wife in Into The Woods. I want to see her act more!
I actually like how he hits some of the high notes in this version. The soft “when I’m gone” at the end made Jesus seem less angry and more calm and understanding
Never watched this version before.. Man. He sure came up short on, "When I'm GOOOOOOOOOOOOONE!".. Judas didnt looked amazed or shocked at all. What the heck was he thinking? Kind of an important part of the play.. I guess I'll never watch this one. Cant beat the original.. Aloha
Sara and Brandon stole this whole show. I always thought Yvonne owned the role or Mary Magdalene because no one really did it as well, but Sara is who I think of when I want to hear Mary’s songs. Brandon and Carl are tied for amazing portrayals or Judas. I refuse to compare them because they’re different and amazing in their own rights. John doesn’t have the range for the role. I like him as an artist but I don’t know why he was cast as Jesus.
I think we can stop making a complete musical and story tail now. This song is the most important message and all we need. Stay in the centered, white circle and let go of all the rest 🙏
The most important message is from Jesus Christ. He tells us all to keep watch. He warns us not to let ourselves be deceived. He tells us of his father's kingdom, which is to come .The whole world is passing away.
Sara crushed this role , I already knew that she was , the thing is I don’t like this production of JCS. But I like it better than the Tim mitchins one
First saw this version on Hulu, went in blind. I grew up Catholic and went to church as a kid. This threw me through a loop. "That's not how that song goes!" Double funny because Judas is doing what we now call Virtue Signaling, on Jesus no less.
Aww ❤ I LOVE this 🎉 ❤ 🎉 ❤❤ John ,as Jesus 🎉 ❤ ❤ ❤ 🎉🎉🎉❤ Forget the script, yo !!! ❤ John {as Jesus} should have TOTALLY taken the {sporadic} opportunity to whip out 0ne of his , Acoustic GuitaR(s) tuRN ed to MaRy {Sara}, & sanG, {Cause aallllll of me loves aallllll of you lllloves your curves & all your edges Loves aaallllll your perrrfeeecttt imperfections !!! } 😂 ___🎉 ❤ 🎉
As talented as he is, singing and acting in a musical as iconic as this is just not his thing. Still, it would be nice to see people turned on to the power of an epic show like this and the so very talented artists who helped make them famous. I hope they follow links to the original.
Sara was amazing, and John Legend was a legend in his own mind. His voice is as weak as his odd infant face. It was an awful casting choice, and makes this production unwatcheable.

Her voice is so beautiful.
Sara Bareilles was fantastic in this.
Wasn’t she? Such talent!
I am an original fan but I liked her equally but different to the original. I don’t think Jesus and Judas were as good as the original
She was brilliant!
For my money, Sara's voice is the one that best emulates the OC Mary Magda, Yvonne Elliman
Sara Bareilles is amazing! What a beautiful voice! She knows how to touch her audience.
Mary magdalene was shining through Sara that night.
🕊🕊🕊
What an awesome cast and production. She is a great Mary
I'm gonna say it. Sara is my favorite Mary.
I agree! Yvonne owned the role for 45 years but Sara owns it now. She was also probably amazing as the Baker’s Wife in Into The Woods. I want to see her act more!
That’s absolute heresy.
And correct lol I totally agree.
@@ShatnerLoveryou should watch Girls5Eva, she sings a lot but she's also hilarious in it
Second only to Yvonne Elliman.
Sara bareiles is beautiful and melodic.
Nothing forced, smooth and delightful!!
This is John Legend as Jesus!!!! wow. huge fan of the original and deeply proud of this rendition. well done. totally feel it.
Nel 1973 ero innamorato della voce e la donna che era Yvonne... Dopo 50 anni lo sono ancora.
Ma questa ragazza canta bene
I have the entire video, but this is one of my favorite scenes. It's brilliant.
How do you get the full film?
@@rODIUMuk John was awful.
Just outstanding
Wow!
I see that sara has been booked all year long greaat
Beautiful !
The original part when he sang gone would send shivers down your spine this one was underwhelming to say the least.
He didn't quite hit the note, that happens sometimes with live renditions
I actually like how he hits some of the high notes in this version. The soft “when I’m gone” at the end made Jesus seem less angry and more calm and understanding
I watched this. It was awesome
she is one of the best ever
No Yvonne Elliman was so much better.
amazing!!!
Absolute banger.
Amazing
Sara Bareilles as “Mary Magdalene”: 👍🏻
Brandon Victor Dixon as “Judas Iscariot”: 👍🏻
John Legend as “Jesus Christ”: 👎🏻
John Legend was the weakest actor of the otherwise excellent cast.
He should stick to his day job.
Agreed. The cast was pretty awesome but Legend was weak as Jesus.

Yvonne was the original and the best but I like Sara too
Yeah, I like John's music, but he needed a stronger more theatrical voice for this song. He went falsetto on the high note instead of belting it.
He looks the part, physically 😂
Legend makes me sad
Love her
Wow! Prayers.
❤❤

John Legend playing Jesus.......tic toc
Legend and his "falsetto" NO NO NO, with the acute embarrassing ending .... role not indicated
Agree. Here I was expecting a powerful high note and got a trickle of a kid’s voice instead 😂 Ben Forster in the British version does it tremendously
You theatre queens need to take a minute. Could you do what she does?
Its hard for me to deal with this.
am i the only one who thinks john legend was still great in this?
You’re not alone, I thought he was great. Different vocalist than the others in the past but phenomenal in his own right.
Who said he wasn't?
@@babpoint half the comments
You are the only ones in the world who can get permission to make this.
John Legend and Sara were perfect together
John Legend was totally miscast for this role. His voice is just not dynamic enough to carry the load that is Jesus Christ (Superstar!).
I disagree! I thought he was unlikely, but perfect!
@@ronbroomell No. Underwhelming.
This is too much of a confrontation. There's such pain and longing in the 70s film
Not a patch on original
Judas hear is cool😂
John Legend’s falsetto flip on ‘gone’ is cringe.
Fair point. It doesn't really work. Good catch!
They must have had an "Applaud" sign flashing for the audience! LOL
Legend was sadly miscast.
Everyone else was good. It's too bad that John Legend couldn't hit the high notes.
She doesn’t even have ointment in this version.
Dafuq is that weak "when im gooone" lol
Nope.....still Carl, Ted and Yvonne.
Ted was bad at best.
John Roger Stephens is no legend

Sara blows both of them out of the water. I found the one shout-singing at her to be shrill and John Legend was just sort of boring.
Legend. True disaster. Is he even there?
Wow, close to the original.
Legend as JC? Nope.
It just doesn't work with legend
Spot on, very disappointed. 😢
I felt the same, but it grew on me some the more I listened to it. But generally I agree.
By him not hitting that high note on 'gone,' he took the ROCK out of the rock opera.
As talented as he is, singing and acting in a musical as iconic as this is just not his thing. Still, it would be nice to see people turned on to the power of an epic show like this and the so very talented artists who helped make them famous. I hope they follow links to the original.
He was an executive producer. Otherwise someone who could handle the role would have been hired.
Sara was amazing, and John Legend was a legend in his own mind. His voice is as weak as his odd infant face. It was an awful casting choice, and makes this production unwatcheable.
She's good, the other two are horrible. Is this a joke?
Not as good as the Australian version with Kate Ceberano, Jon Stevens and John Farnham.
The worst presentation and voice compare to other Mary and Judas. Not mentioned Jesus awkward "falsetto" at end.
John Legend here is just like Nick Jonas in Les Mis... Really bad
John legend is so weak
This version is my least favorite.
