Just looked up from my phone and smiled at the bass hanging on the wall with a Pop R in its mouth. 1991, 13 yrs old and won big bass and stringer. Haven’t had that luck since but still trying !!!
Wow ,, best lure review I have ever watched ,, it irks me to no end when I watch a lure a lure review and the person giving the review doesn't give the size of the lure they are using ,,, I am a inshore fisherman ,, I fish a lot at night ,, this is a great lure when you are wanting to fish quiet up on those flats at night ,, Redfish and Speckled trout love them ,, you got another subscriber :)
David Dudley Outdoors Jimmy Houston and me were using the Rebel Pop-R when you were still sitting on a Potty chair. The others are just currently known. I am not making lite of your instructions on using this cool old lure by any means. A long time ago you had read instead of watching videos. He brought the idea of walking this bait to catch bass instead of just using it as a popper. The secret to using this bait is learning how to work it. That thing will catch bass everywhere. Off the bank and over 20-feet of water too. The secret to fishing any lure is using it until you learn how catch fish with it. Some lures are easy to learn and some are harder. The secret is fishing it fast as you can and fan casting it everywhere. This lure works all day long if you use it to find fish. This also works using a square bill too. The best way to learn about any lure is fishing with someone who uses that lure all day and catches fish using it. You can buy every lure they sell and never learn how to fish any of them if you don’t use it long enough to figure out how it works. I use one size and one color with single inline hooks and no feathers. Fish hit the lure from the action and sound, they have no chance to study the lure because it is moving fast. I don’t fish for money, I fish for fun. I seldom loose fish hooked with single hooks that eat the bait because single hooks holds fish better than a treble ever can. I caught citation award size bass on the original Pop-R so that is the only one I use.
@@jamessipes122 When I start using the lure I just sharpen the hooks that came on the lure. I removed the feather tail hook and used one size larger hook to see if that made a difference. It might have but, the truth is I couldn’t tell any difference. Lately I replaced the treble hooks with single inline light wire hooks. You might think this makes no sense but, it seems to work better. I got tired of fighting with treble hooks that got hooked deep inside the fish’s mouth; making getting the lure free a pain and saves killing fish. The Pop-R is small and because it is small fish suck the lure completely inside their mouth. The single light wire hooks easily penetrate thru the lips of the fish. The small diameter wire is strong and once the hook goes thru and into the bend of the hook it is not easily thrown. The fish most always are hooked on inside of the lips of the mouth. Single hooks pick up fewer weeds and fewer snags and hold fish better than trebles too. You might think treble hooks miss less fish than single inline hooks; but if you never try them you will never know. I mount the belly hook with the bend facing front and the tail hook facing up. I use a split ring connection on the lure tied to the line.
Thanks David for taking the time to show the intricacies of minor changes. That can be the tough thing for many people, but this can make all the difference in your success!
I throw the Lobino Rio Rico and Yellow Magic Magnum Japanese Poppers. Best 2 on the market but pricey, worth it though I have a entire box full of them they are that good.
Been using pop r since I was kid in the late 80’s lol. One of my favorite top water baits to use right next to feathered spook. Kind Like David I use 40lb braid with mh modern composite glass/graphite rod. Instead of letting mono stretch, I let the rod be the forgiving factor.
The Pop R is a go to lure for me in the warmer months, got almost a 6# last year on it. I really like my Trouble Maker Popper Golden Eye is 20 plus years old and still works, this is all bear up missing an eye, the fish just kill this thing.
hope to get a better game on pop r.. my only fish on one was letting it sit there dead by shore around cover and i looked away distracted and let it sit there and one came up and nailed it. Since then bought some Rico's , Yellow Magic's , and Rebel of course. Just not sure when to go with that or a frog or a pencil popper..
Good video. I use the medium all the time. I pop it for the big splash and barely twitch it to make it spit quietly instead of downsizing. I still catch enough to finish in the bottom of my BFLs. 😂
Rick Clunn showed Zell Roland how to fish it! And Rick learned to fish the Pop R quickly instead of throwing the Pop R on the water and letting it sit until all rings are gone before moving the bait.
Hey David one of my favorite lures early in the morning late in the evening. But what I would make a suggestion to you is when you talk about the tip action of a rod let us know whether it's a moderate or a fast or extra fast whatever it ends up being. Telling us a medium heavy rod is great I guess it started but many medium heavy rods will have a medium moderate tip a moderate tip a fast tip or even a extra fast tip. Just a thought for clarity.
Great info DD, Learned a lot on fishing the POP R. Never attempted to walk it but it makes sense. I use these a lot and also use ZELL'S PRANK (POP R) alot too aqnd catch a lot of bass on them also. Great baits during the SHAD spawn!!!!
Love those Pop-Rs! I attempted to purchase a rod at Profishiency, the discount code was no longer valid, even though it was still listed on they're website. Thought I might give one of your rods a try. Keep those tips coming, better times are ahead. God Bless!
17 lb mono. ALWAYS !!! Med. Action 6’8” - 7’ rod Been fishing tournaments since 1991 -- trust me on this -- better yet - this is straight from Rick Clunn’s mouth -
When you're referring to a large sized Pop-R is that comparable to the Magnum sized Pop-R by Rebel? And the Medium sized Pop-R is the one you'd normally see labeled or in better terms of the Rebel brand "Pop-R"? Without the Magnum terminology in the title? Also I personally really like the way you explain things or teach so to speak. You always put things into terms that I can really relate to and actually understand what and why certain things are done the way they are. Now I only have like 5 combos to work with and I usually use a medium power rod for my Top Waters and Jerkbaits cause it's a shorter rod I can work the rod more effectively but on that combo I use 12lb floroclear by P-line and I really don't wanna throw braid with my Jerkbaits BUT... Since you said you use Braid on a Medium-Heavy with the Large and Medium sized Pop-R really opened my eyes to the fact that I could throw this bait on my dockskipping/my go-to everything set up, do you ever have any problems with ripping the bait out of the fish's mouth with that power rod using braid? Again thank you and God bless!
Never use straight braid. The hooks will get caught in the limp line. Mono which floats is the best leader to braid main line. Always tie straight to the bottom of the eyelet. Never use a split ring or clip.
Rick Clunn started Pop-R popularity and told Zell to keep his mouth shut - Zell after winning a tournament after Clunn told him how to fish it blabbed his mouth off - pissing off Clunn - Clunn to this day says he hasn’t forgiven him…
Why would you waste your time on posting such a negitive comment if it was "useless information" or are you just unhappy in your own life that you have to push it onto others? I hope whatever you're going through gets better my dude and you learn to love rather than hate. God bless.
Been fishing a pop-r for 30 years....and DD is still teaching me stuff I didn't know! Thanks sir. I appreciate you!

I never stopped throwing the pop r. And will always use one.
My new idea is all gold color pop r yes
Can't wait for the tournaments to start again

@@gizmocarr3093 thank you very much. I am intrigued by your method and plan to try it. A size 1 or 1/0 is probably about the right size?
I've caught a nice 4 pound largemouth on a rebel pop r. They come in handy for all conditions.
Thanks David for taking the time to show the intricacies of minor changes. That can be the tough thing for many people, but this can make all the difference in your success!
I use a split ring on the mouth. Gives it alittle more movement for me. I also use 20 fluorocarbon on a spinning rod
I prefer mono I feel like my landing % is better vs braid for me.
Another great video David thank you!
Just caught my 1st pop r bass this week. Love those top water bites.
Pop R type popper, my fav currently is the OSP Louder. I have the 50 and 60 size and peacock bass just slurp it up!
Another good video son!❤
I throw the Lobino Rio Rico and Yellow Magic Magnum Japanese Poppers. Best 2 on the market but pricey, worth it though I have a entire box full of them they are that good.
I love your advice it helps alot
One of my top summer baits. Slow pop along laydowns and right along a rock pile. Drives them nuts.
That's for the suggestions for modifications. You know you hooked me with your Whopper plopper hack and I've been subscribed ever since.
Been using pop r since I was kid in the late 80’s lol. One of my favorite top water baits to use right next to feathered spook.

Only color is blue/chrome and only a magnum pop R - thrown it forever! Gave me a lot to think about Dave!👍

when would you choose a Pop R over other types of topwater baits like a spook, whopper plopper or a chug bug? Thanks!
Tomorrow morning!

Yeah man great break down. I don't toss the old Pop-R's as much anymore but should they are a heck of a bait.
Rick Clunn showed Zell Roland how to fish it! And Rick learned to fish the Pop R quickly instead of throwing the Pop R on the water and letting it sit until all rings are gone before moving the bait.

I have 10 Pop R's that I sanded down and still use them, man that was a long time ago i did that.

Great video, thanks for the tips on it. Are you going to make anymore videos on your tournament wins, those were great.
Semper Fi.
Hey I live in Bedford and I love coming and fishing at your lake, so when is it going to reopen
Like that hat. Wearing the same one
Good video DD. just was watching a video on Rick Clunn's you tube about poppers .

Do u use a loop knot with your pop r?
Love Buggs in 2 to third week of May especially if the water is in the bushes
Fisherman’s central 💪🏾
What type of feathers do you prefer using??
Go to a fly shop and buy saddle hackles to tie on your rear trebles.
Good info, DD.
I was looking for pop rap lol
17 lb mono. ALWAYS !!! Med. Action 6’8” - 7’ rod

You didn’t explain when you should use the pop r
Bone colored mag in the post spawn!

A sadly forgotten topwater option with all these floating buzzbaits going around.
