Subtle differences in action from design tweaks, line type/size, line tie placement, hook size, retrieve speed action, Super Helpful not only with Rico’s but all other baits! You’re “The Best!” ❤ The Video Rick! Thank you!
This man knows way more than most. Ive caught a lot of fish on a rico and never knew i should have been fishing it on 17lb line. Rick Clunn getting it done on youtube. Keep them tips coming.
Rick, I think your channel is going to be your greatest contribution to the sport! This is epic info you are making available! I think I speak for all anglers when I say "more please!"
Very cool video. I do not remember if it was Bass magazine or another publication but someone wrote an article about sanding the Pop R’s lower lip after Zell had told the world. If I am incorrect on an article I apologize for that. Zell came to a club meeting around 1990 and presented how he tuned the Pop R and how he worked it. Along 10:11 with other baits and how to fish them. Mr Clunn these stories are educational and entertaining. Thank you!
Very strange at me finding this video. Back in the late 80's and early 90's I began fishing the Pop R fast because with my mentality it's hard for me to slow down. I had my dad with me and was fishing it fast and he told me I was fishing it too fast. I didn't catch a 5 pounder with it that day to change his mind but I did catch a 3 pounder. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
“If you like the video, subscribe...” 😂 Mr. Clunn, I subscribed before I watched the video because I saw you! You are absolutely the greatest bass fisherman that has ever walked this planet. I am so excited you have a UA-cam channel! Can’t wait to see more videos! Also, yes, I liked the video. 👍🏻
Man, if he was in his prime today with the new fish finding sonars out now too, you talk about dominating!! My fishing buddies and I always called him the MJ of bass fishing! Man he could come into a tournament and destroy the field. Hell, if you're ol'school you know how good he is....not was!
Rick it's a shame that you are not one of the Legends in my eyes you are.. for some reason I have always loved your approach to Bass fishing... you are so unique.. May God richly bless you and your family...❤😅
Just subbed and signed up for all alerts - keep 'em coming man! I've been a huge fan ever since I heard you say "study the mouse, not the owl" on a segment on The Bass Pros years ago. Thank you for the insight(s)!
I am so happy you have started a You Tube channel. I would like to say thank you for helping me catch many bass over the decades. Two things you said really stick out for me. First, back in the early '90's, you said that if you didn't have blisters on your hands at end of the day of jerkbait fishing, you weren't fishing it correctly. Second, always duplicate a cast that caught a fish. I'm looking forward to you sharing more words of wisdom!!
I am still fishing with the old Pop "R lures that I had from fishing team events in the late 1980's and 1990's ! Won a few tournaments using them too ! Clear, chrome/black, bone, frog pattern.
Great stuff absolutely love it when true bass pros create UA-cam content. I had the pleasure of fishing with you as a co-angler in the 1991 Bull Shoals Top 100.
You've been the guru of bass fishing for me and many others throughout the decades. SO GREAT to see you coming out with videos, you have so much to share. Thanks again, Rick!
I fished with Rick Clunn in that 83 US Open on Lake Mead on day 3 of the tournament. This guy is definitely the "Texas fishin machine. I didn't do much fishing that day BUT I learned more in that day than any day in any boat. If I remember correctly, Mr. Clunn vaulted from 17th. to 3rd place on that day and won the US Open in that year. Jimmy Houston presented Rick Clunn the trophy and the money in a clear box and the key to that box was around a tigers neck. FUN TIMES AWESOME EXPERIENCE.
My favorite top water bait to throw and catch bass on! I will say the Rico's will out fish the Pop-R most days. Several times in club tournaments I caught more or all the bass on the Rico when partner was throwing the Pop-R.
Keep up the videos Rick! I know the old school guys don't care too much for social media but look at it like this. You could teach millions of young kids how to be more successful on the water. Even long after you and I are gone, kids can still watch and learn. Good job my friend. God bless you 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Great video, one of my favorite that anyone has made,my first tournament was 74,southern California,I had a partner,so we always teamed,we had a 17' skeeter with a 115 rude and a bigtime flasher, that boat was only 6' wide and scary,we had 38 lb trolling motor,we were on Otay lake, very green at any tournament, there were no specific rules for boats,it was sponsored by stren,I don't think they even had electricity, the scale was one like in the vegetable department,we won with 10 lbs,got a check for a 100.00,and a bunch of mono line, hats ,my main lures were the rapala silver and black, gold and black, lucky 13,I couldn't throw with the ambassadeur,so I used a mitchell 300 with two spools,7' yellow eagle claw trout rod, things were so different, good nostalgia,Thanks
Thanks Rick for the great video. Fished the original Rebel popper, now Pop R, in the 70's. We used a 7 foot fiberglass rod with 8 lb test mono on a spinning rod. Held the rod high to provide lift to make to bait spit rather than chug. It would spit and walk like a spook. At the end of the day you were worn out, but caught a lot of bass this way. The light line was necessary to get distance because of the clear water we had here in our central Kentucky reservoirs.
Thanks for the info Rick. I fished a hula popper fast like that back in the 60s and caught many bass with that fast technique. Everyone in the boat thought I was making too much noise with the lure until I started putting bass in the boat. Then everyone wanted to know if I had another one in my box Lol😆
Rick, thanks so much for this history and explanation. So glad you’ve put together a channel to share your experience and perspectives. I’ll be watching. All the best, Paul
Amazing. When Choke Canyon first opened we used to slay em on the Pop R fishing it just like you noted. We didn’t know what we were doing different. We just too young then and too impatient to fish it any slower! Really enjoyed this video.
Rick, please keep the videos coming. As a young boy eaten up with bass fishing in the '70's and growing up on Toledo Bend, I read everything I could get my hands on about you. It's great to see you putting out videos like this.
Thank you RC...Its "chugger" season here in West by golly Virginia,so I'm gonna incorporate your wisdom into my presentation. You are one of the Big Dogs I used to read about in BassMaster mag in the late 80s that got me in to bass fishing,Mr Clunn.Thank You good sir
I feel like I've found a gold mine and I don't want to share it with my fishing buddies. I tried like crazy to figure out the bottom lip thing back in the early 90's and gave up. Thank you so much for explaining this and demonstrating the technique. You're a great teacher Rick, thank you!
Your attitude towards fishing and nature in general make you such a great embasedor for the sport. You truly have made a living doing what you love in a place you love to be.
Rick, I’ve been a big fan of yours for years. My favorite memory of you was when you were doing a fishing show. You had hooked a really nice bass and after landing it, you were showing the camera the fish when it flipped out of your hands. You jumped into the lake after the fish. You didn’t come me up with the fish but I was forever a fan.
Yes, two legends (Rick Clunn and Al Lindner) were fishing together on a Florida Lake. It's in Glen Lau's 1982 film, "Feeding Habits of Bass", but might have been seen in an older TV show. Great entertainment and bass fishing tips!
Rick, my freind Ken Anthony who fished with you several times in several B.A.S.S tournaments turned me onto one of your favorites which was a bone colored pop-r in qaurter ounce. Anyway once Ken turned me onto your pattern I won several tournamnts on it. I did finally realize you had to change the hooks that came on them because theybwere those chrome plated cheap hooks. Once I chamged them out it was on. That bone colored pop-r is one of the best catching baits I have ever fished. What always suorised me was the 1/4 oumce always produced more fish for me then the bigger one. I also customed tied in rooster festhers in white and added silver tensile to it and it basically super charged the bait. I loved your bone colored Pop-r so much.....well lets just say Rebel could stop making them and Inwould have enough to fish 4 life times. I kind of went overboard and am ashamed to say how many I have to this day....lets just say cases of them!
Thanks for the great video and all the knowledge Rick. I’ve been fishing this lure for years just like your dad did andI can’t wait to try out this new method. Thanks again and keep it coming
Thank You Sooooooo Much!!!!! It's truly all the little things\hidden keys within every technique. That will open it up to it's full potential. Only the individual, that is willing to open their mind, can unlock each technique's secret. To zone in on that better than average response bite. I need more of what is in your brain!!! 🙏🙏🙏
I have an original Rico that I had custom painted, and I’ve caught several nice 4+lb bass. I’m more excited now knowing your history and I just subbed to your channel and I have several of your LC’s along with a few of WEC Ed Chambers handmade balsa baits. My brother and I grew up fishing Kentucky lake with our Dad in the late 50’s early 60’s with Heddon Lucky 13’s and have saved Dad’s lures in a shadow box frame. Thanks for sharing so much, and I hope you have forgiven Zel by now 🙏😜
Rick I LOVE LOVE pop r's!!!! One of my favorite baits to fish and I'm intrigued by it. I wanna hear more about them and how to find the big fish that eat them!!
Love the story of the pop r and Rico. I bought a bunch of the Rico’s many years ago and still use them. Great video and you have a new subscriber. Anxious to hear some squarebill stories.
Rick I learned to fish the pop-R by watching Hank Parker he fished very fast I do the same thing even to day I have 10 or 15 of them love the pop-R !!!!!!!!!!
Rick, how deep will a popr attract a fish from. For example a local lake has a lot of water that is 3-4 feet and I’m wondering if this might just be what I need to draw some of those stubborn fish up just be pestering them. Thank you.
Strike king spit king was the lure I was using doing the same technique of spitting the lure as you pull it along. I like that rico just never bought one.
Great article Rick! Super excited to see you sharing your wealth of fishing knowledge on this YT format! Which length and power Carbonlite rod do you use for the Rico? I love the new Johnny Morris Platinum rods as well ! Would one of those work the Rico well?
So where does the Phenix Michael made by TIFFA fit in the time line? I read someplace that Jennifer at Lobina for the most part had Norio copy the Michael with some minor changes and named it the Rico.
What does the 17 lbes test line do that a 12 lbs test line mono can't? I'm just curious what the 17 line does that affects the action of this lure so much. Awesome video and I'm gonna break out some poppers next time I'm out on the water.
I stopped at a garage sale last year. In that garage was her late husband's fishing equipt. I bought all of it. Everything. Yep. One of the boxes had nothing but topwater baits. Opening that man's fishing boxes for the first time was like I'd just found pirate treasure! First I felt like I'd won the lottery! Then it hit me. The guy must have loved bass fishing as much as I do. The guy took great care of his fishing gear! Cool thing is. That old metel tackle box is full! I mean full of " pop r s" some still in the packages. Now I know how to really fish these baits

Subtle differences in action from design tweaks, line type/size, line tie placement, hook size, retrieve speed action, Super Helpful not only with Rico’s but all other baits! You’re “The Best!” ❤ The Video Rick! Thank you!
I discovered the same thing with the Chugbug down in Florida back in the late 90’s. 17lb test grey Trilene line
I could listen to you talk history, lures and techniques for hours. Thank you sit for your time and effort sharing this. It's greatly appreciated.
This man knows way more than most. Ive caught a lot of fish on a rico and never knew i should have been fishing it on 17lb line. Rick Clunn getting it done on youtube. Keep them tips coming.

Thanks for the info, I will try a faster retrieve with the popper R.
Probably the reason I hate a pop r, been fishing them wrong! Never knew all this thanks Rick
The Rio Rico is solely responsible for my PB largemouth and Small mouth 8.93 and 7.4 respectively.. Rick thanks for the great content

Subbed, thumbs-upped, ordered a 3 pack of pop-r’s
Rick, how deep will a popr attract a fish from. For example a local lake has a lot of water that is 3-4 feet and I’m wondering if this might just be what I need to draw some of those stubborn fish up just be pestering them.
Thank you.
The Thunder Shad, another great bait would be a great video 👍
Thank you for starting a you tube channel!
Black Rico is a hammer!
Great documentary clunn gitz “R”done
Lovely video really good advice thanks for your time and help please do video on spinnerbaits thanks 👍
Thanks for the video what rod are you using?
