I worked for a municipality in facilities for a while. One particular day I was at the airport fire station. The city had just got a new firetruck and the engineer gave me a tour. The thing was bigger than my house. The truck had 3 seats across the front and the driver sat in the middle. Around the airport it took one person to operate the truck, but when it came to taking it to fleet services, that was another story. The 2 outboard seats in the cab were maned to help navigate corners etc., and it had a police car at each corner as an escort. The surface streets were so busy and crowded during the day, they moved it after midnight.
Chief Watts, I recently discovered your channel and throughly enjoy the content. I expect your highly thought of by department personnel because I’d bet your the same leader every 3rd day at the station as you are with your employees at Sumter Wrecker, never one to ask of someone else that your not willing to do yourself. I met Chief Ford several years ago at your FDHQ when two of my officers and myself came to pick up a F450 rescue truck that we bought from y’all for our little department. Tell Chief Ford I said hello and best of luck to you all in 2023.
Mr David Chief Ford owned started Sumter Wrecker. I worked for him for four years then bought the business. On shift tomorrow I will pass on.Thanks for watching and stay safe .
Mr. Hal, Shaw has sure changed since 1974 !! Back then the base motor pool had a GMC with a 25 ton weldbuilt twin boom. Mr. Wilbert did an awesome job for sure.
We tow Double Decker transit buses up here in Ottawa Ontario Canada, they are huge behind our V70. However what you have and what your towing there makes my Tow Truck and DD look like a peanut. Nice job Mr. Wilbert. Thanks for the videos.. kind of like hanging out with you guys and looking over your shoulders and learning.
1cfnking1 This summer two from Ontario stopped by to visit. They tow those busses as well. I have a picture on my desk. They are huge. Thanks for watching and stay safe
Good evening Mister Hal and Mr Wilbur, that fire truck, if properly rebuilt, would be an awesome addition to your local fire department if it becomes available at government auction, though y'all might have to have an addition put on to y'all's fire department lol that thing is a monster, but even if y'all got it as scrap, there are still lots of good parts on it, the brass valves alone are worth paying scrap price for it
This one reminds me of when I still worked in the Auto Electrical game as a field service tech. Back in New Zealand in the 80s, I had to do regular repairs and maintenance on a cannon foam fire truck very similar to this at our international Airport. Was cool because I used to get to take it out on the tarmac and drive it and test the cannons and deluge systems. Another cool vid, cheers.
That’s pretty cool!!! Never thought I would see an airport ARFF crash truck on the back of a tow truck. Did the Air Force remove the drive shaft for you?
@@SumterWrecker Thanks Mr Hal, I had no idea that is how fire trucks work as far as unhooking the drive shaft to tow fire trucks. Again very interesting different video.
Great job. I am surprised that they didn't send the national guard. All our local units have at least 1 tri axle wrecker's. Would be good training for them.
Awsome job! reminds me of my time stationed on Stuttgart Germany airport (us army side). I looks big in relation to the wrecker but those crash trucks are really huge in person.
Mr. Wilbert did an awesome job as usual! Did he have to disable any of the drivetrain for that distance? Also, if ya'll gotta move it again, just sling it with the Gopher! It couldn't be as bad a trip as the grader with low tires going to scrap!
In reading the comments afterward, I noticed someone else already asked about the drivetrain. Oughta recommend watching the video you had before about towing that one firetruck with the disconnect feature.
Now that's a *Monster!!* 😮 I'm always happy to see you all get these kinds of tows. That way you're not next to a busy highway. Nice lot where you can move around and not worry about motorists flying by. Great job Mr. Wilbert! Thanks for sharing Mr. Hal and be safe 🔧

I have always been impressed by Mr Wilber's skill and knowledge , plus inventive creativeness in unusual situations, but gees that must have taken "cajones" the size of watermelons to do that , good on ya Mr Wilber.. God bless and you all stay safe in 2023.
I know that size is deceiving in relation to weight, and I know for liability reasons you have to utilize safety chains, but I don't know that I would have wanted that big thing chained to the back of my truck if it decided to hop off of that wheel lift. I believe if I had to tow something that large for any distance at speed, I would have to rig up some kind of tether on the air line similar to a break away switch to lock the brakes and keep that thing from rear ending the wrecker should it decide to go it's own way. Impressive tow and as always, Mr. Wilbert makes it look easy.
Mr. Hal. What a video. I never thought about having to tow an ARFF before but I guess even they need a tow once in a while. 2 things came to mind while watching. One, did they have to drain the tank for weight and two, did you have to mind your height? Happy New Year and look forward to another year of fantastic videos.
This fire truck is in really good condition. I mention it because I think it is an old truck. The fire service at this airbase sure had a lot of in-door parking bays. Are they all used?
I might have actually used chains to bind it to the underreach instead of straps. But that is just me. As long as everything works the way it is supposed to, it's all good.
