Ancestor worship refers to rituals designed to commemorate and venerate the spirits of one's deceased forebears. While it is often associated with the Confucian notion of filial piety, ancestor worship crosses the boundaries of religious traditions, geographical regions, and socioeconomic groups. The veneration of the dead, including one's ancestors, is based on love and respect for the deceased. In some cultures, it is related to beliefs that the dead have a continued existence, and may possess the ability to influence the fortune of the living. Some groups venerate their direct, familial ancestors.
15:35 as a filipino it amazes me how different worlds and different cultures possess the same practice and beliefs. We also have spirits in forests, hills and the sea and we call them "Enkanto". We don't pray to them rather give them respect by saying "Tabi tabi po" when we tresspass into their territories. The same concept also applies if we shit, piss drunk in their territory and we get plagues or infestations or even sudden death. I'm just amazed really.
Funny how things like these get totally ignored when people are virtue signaling about how much everyone should be and think the same. They make up crazy lies while ignoring or refusing to show how different peoples from around the world really do that share some of the most ancient, beautiful, meaningful beliefs, stories and traditions. I just don't understand why certain people now days claim to love diversity but their actions say the opposite since they don't want us to have our own cultures while still respecting those of others....that seems to me one of the fatal flaws with monotheistic religions that call for murdering everyone who doesn't agree with them and convert... 😆
Though sadly I think that our nature to not be threatened by someone proclaiming the existence of another god, may have made many of us more susceptible to letting the spy into the inner circle...if you catch my drift. If "pagans" had treated the first Christians like they treated us...well I don't think it would have gone the way it did in many parts of the world. But oh no we can't have any sort of cultural pride especially pagans that see our similarities across the world...we might just mess everything up for the one world order cabal... :)

I agree that those who hold their ancestors in high regards and honor them, are absolutely rewarded. I am convinced that my ancestors protected us the other night. We had a tornado touch down about 100 yards from our property, but our homestead and my family were spared.
I really want to emphasize the importance of ancestral worship as a way of life/ on a regular basis. While offerings can be a great tool, dont underestimate simply learning about your ancestors (what were their names, what was their life like, what was their hobbies/ personalities/ skills (maby you have an inherited skill you never knew about!), talk to old relatives, visit the places where your ancestors lived etc. Basically, bring them with you into the present time 😊
My dead grandfather showed up in the passenger seat for a split second as I was sliding full speed towards a phone pole. The car literally went in an L shape away from the pole taking my side mirror. I should have hit that pole and died. But I guess my ancestors have a different plan for me.
Never for one second doubt they exist. Never doubt they are powerful beyond your abilities. Never stop loving and respecting them. You don’t need to see to instinctually know.
My German grandmother visited me in Wyoming when I was about 6 or 7. I was going to travel with her to Oklahoma and stay with her for a year, but my parents decided otherwise. On her way home, she was in a car accident that knocked out one of her teeth as she almost went off a cliff in the rockies. She said later that she saw her long deceased mother standing in the road with her hand outstretched as if to say "stop". My grandmother said that her mother saved her life that day.
I've been practicing ancestral veneration one way and another since my grandparents passed away over 20 years ago. It started because I just missed them so much. Recently, following a shitty diagnosis, I've started to create a more organized kind of practice, I'm working on my family tree and learning more about my distant ancestry. As someone who has self harmed. In modern times. There are issues with anything relating to blood letting. Always interested in learning history how it was not how we want it to be. Thanks for the lessons on the elves. I had a major health issue and I'm sure it was the prayers of my grandparents that kept me here.
We are learning so much more about epigenetics and DNA and trauma--I really think we will someday learn "scientifically" how we store trauma and memories and experiences in our genetic material that we pass on and inherit.
Hej, Thank you for a confirmation about the stones holding the vibration of our (nordic) ancestors. I saw this a few years ago in a 'dreamtime' but had previously read or heard nothing about this. Today is the first time i've seen this idea presented. I went into dreamtime in search of any of my past lives. A very broad shouldered and "thick" (through /stocky) man appeared to me, somewhat shorter than yourself. During his time he mainly lived at ''base camp'' (with his clan) in south-central Norway c2000 BCE. Every spring a selected group (by lot) of 30 or so individuals would trek to the arctic circle and return in the fall. Their tribe was called the "Sun clan" or solklan - but in ancient Nordic. The man's name was Urik (pr 'Urk') and he had a wife, children, and a piece of land to enjoy with lush grass, high up, overlooking a fjord. He was a free man, in every way. If you want to talk more about what I saw, I am happy to do so. I will look out for your reply. Note: I am a New Zealander, once again living in NZ with my Swedish partner, hence the greeting. In the folklore when the fog is right above the ground it was the elves dancing. And fog was and still is also called for Dis, like morgondis (morning dis). Also sailors are calling the fog for dis.

Semen was often left in the stone cups (natural or man made) especially during midsommer (still today in Sweden sometimes 😉😉😉) Often couples would do the deed on the rocks. 🥰 This is particularly dine to Freyr & Freya (obviously for fertility reasons.)
What I was taught, oral tradition, is that if they're not respected that itself will cause a sort of illness in life, just as the parallel of respecting vs disrespecting household spirits, causes a home to be well or "be ill" & things to come up missing & go badly there & for those who dwell there. It is bc of the disruptive energy, the negative effects that a lack of respect in general, futile resentments held onto, a gunky attitude if you will, that the wellness or illness of our thinking has on everything we do, & on our environment & potentially community, on who is around us, & even seems to be absorbed into the walls of our home & things we touch daily. It's a manifestation of & a lesson on "attitude is everything." That was told to me by my Ukrainian/Sámi grandma, whose Ukrainian roots are said to be going back to Scandinavia. I have no documentation on that & no idea who first said so. I only know those two cultures definitely mixed, others went with or followed Rurik & his people... & That's not the only interaction between them, so i think its related. & Her words on this way of living make sense to me. Our strength relies on our mind & spirit & "heart," not just our muscles alone. Our thoughts affect not just our mood but health & the outcome of what we do, so being in alignment, in harnony, teamwork whatever, in a respectful mindset is a feel good + a practical thing. It's as much cognitive as... reverent, though I'm not sure that's the exact word I want. So anyway I was taught that it's the same reason as the act of setting out a bowl of risengrøt, & as much to remind ourselves of interconnectedness & effective thinking in action as for appreciation & acknowledgement, that both things have the same motive & effect. & The version of this pagan way that could be cast as innocent children's story could be carried on in plain sight by everyone after conversion to preserve the message & without disturbing or causing needless dramatic nonsense from devout converts. So those pictures that are everywhere of a happy nisse, tomte, household or farm spirit guy with a big bowl in front of him are visual reminders of the old knowledge & beliefs, the old methods of strengthening attitude & being in tune, & this tradition you speak of. A symbol carried forward of Old Ways. Or, Gram thought so & works for me.

I have been so drawn to the Norse people and only found out recently from DNA testing that my father made me Germanic, specifically from Denmark and Northern Germany, with some English/Irish and a pinch of French. You hit it out of the ball park again, buddy! Ive been doing very similar all along and didnt even know it. The segment on venerating those who are honorable got me. I wonder, is there any sort of karmic obligation or simple soul desire to help/sooth/"nurture" those Ancestors who didnt have it easy and really just did the best they could? Those that had inner hurts in their adult lives that got passed down to their children.

I believe it is ancestral. You sit on a grave and meditate, hoping for an ancestor to communicate with you. If you question who is protecting you, then you really don't believe in it. Someone from Kenya or a native from New Zealand will be hard pressed to sit on a nordic grave and find his ancestor. Why do people from all over the world have to ask "can I become one of you Norse people" ... why not just be happy with who you are and who your own ancestors were...got nothing to do with racism, you just can't change your ancestral DNA and fashionable become part of the religious aspect of a culture you have no part of. Let's not have woke-ism creep into traditional beliefs, whatever they are. The same thing happened in the 60's and 70's, and when the Beatles pushed Buddhism - people thought it was a "cool" religion and started doing Buddhist things. Of course, that didn't last long. People always looking to find a comfortable religion, or one that is "featured". Before the "Vikings" show most people had no clue about Norse religion. Now how many want to be part of this, any which way?
This! 100%. And the Beatles were also into Hinduism. I was a Hindu monk for 12 years and know all of them met many times with, and followed for a time, Srila Prabhupada. George Harrison even wrote My Sweet Lord about Krishna.

My Grandparents took me and the rest of their grandchildren to a near by lake for fishing and swimming each year. Said lake has this awesome cliff face for diving. It does sound cringe, but when I was on top of this cliff I just felt as if someone was there. It was at 5:30 in the morning and the only boat on this lake was the kayak I had rented. Gotta make a mental note to bring something for an offering next time I go there.

Understand that if your Ancestors didn’t practice these traditions than gotta recognize that but the Norse that practice the beliefs n practices they were from that Society that practices this religion! I’d say if you borrow some practices and again you show true appreciation for it and practice your it as closely to as original as possible than yeah go ahead! Speaking of Elves and Disir causing illness, it is the same in Confucian theology on spirits, ancestors are made and if you do not sacrifice to them they will forget and become "demons" 鬼, trolls or other kind of strange creatures 妖怪. Neo-Confucians of Cheng-Zhu school discuss how after death our qi is transformed depending on various factors.
For example Yao Ying takes issue with the common notion that ghosts 鬼 and deities 神 as distinct entities. Both are created from qi, the basic stuff of the universe. When the physical body decays, qi is left, marauding as ghosts in vast, empty space. When activated, qi becomes wind, rain, thunder, and hail; when in its tranquil state, it takes the form of mountains and streams, which can be worshipped as deities.

Your research and work is a great treasure to me. May I recommend reading “The Seed Of Yggdrasil” you have the grasp on the subject to truly appreciate what the book has to offer.
The spirits of dead ancestors are wondering and bothering their descendents so you offer them blood or butter to calm them down? What a foundational belief that is.
2-3 days before my grandma's death, my sister saw in a dream that she and other females of the family (including my grandma) are sitting together and my grandpa (who had already passed away before) comes and takes away my grandma. And then she died in 2-3 days.
Just one nit picky comment regarding the Ragnar Lođbrok speech that has been translated to be Valkaries, it is often commented as well on the show that he was descended from Odin, so, maybe in his case (forgetting the likelihood that we would happen to have a copy of his final speech/poem) the ancestral female spirits and the Valkaries are maybe intentionally interchangeable and perhaps they were more befitting for the poetry of the word...yeah, doesn't really matter, just noticed, and felt like mentioning.

I can tell you that what we practice still to this day, blood is still offered to the ancestors in sacrifice of rooster, chicken, goat, lamb or ox, also drinks are offered from alcohol to milk, beer, juice, coffee etc. To us the main logic is that it feeds the ancestral spirit to help protect the living descendants from, evil spirits, problem, disease etc,., and thats's probably why most pagan would offer blood to ancestors. Your point makes sense that such thing could have been twisted by Christianity.
With all things in this realm being cyclic in nature, what would you think as to the elves casting sickness upon us less as an act of a malicious intent, but more so as us being an extention of them. And without our honoring of that which we once were (cyclic return of energies) we might actually be bringing illnesses upon ourselves by disregarding this connection and unity?
By straying further and further each day from our roots, we would be putting ourselves closer and closer into harms way. Just as the tree is vulnerable in its infancy, so are we. And as we both grow, so does our being, but our offspring, shoots and fruits are at risk if we do not protect them at all costs?
Might it be, that nature itself is attempting to stunt the reproduction of that witch takes for granted its own life force?
The elves being our ancestors/energies attempting to reclaim their powers to better direct the next generation of offspring?

I'm always wondering if Freyr has something to do with German frei/Freiheit. If you're free in this world, it's probably because of your ancestors and what they did for the ones coming after them.
Interesting, in my culture.... The little people were the spirits of the human land before the human arrived. The ancestors and household gods protect the home and descendants from the little people and cryptic entities. The little people are shape shifters and often seek offerings causing illnesses... Many often mistaken these shape shifters as ancestors, that's usually when our mediums, seers or shamans come to play and ward off these entities.

They will get revenge on you for dumping on them. My husband did this once in an emergency situation - right by some trees at a pond. The next day I was sitting in my car with the windows down - same area - and a huge flock of geese flew right over me honking and shitpissed all over me. I will probably sound crazy asking this but it's a legit question. my husband that I've been separated from (still technically married) has told me he is Norse pagan and "knows what to offer to the gods to get what he wants" long story short September last year I got a bruise looking mark on my leg that still hasn't healed. started really battling depression and panic attacks got a very bad staph infection. and now 13 days ago I fell (felt like I was pulled down ) I tore ligaments and tendons in my foot. please don't take offense I'm genuinely curious if he was serious and if he somehow told a god it could hurt me for him to get something in return. also almost constant migraines for a few months now too. I'm sorry if this offends I just really would like to know if he was being honest or a narcissist.

Indo-European ancestor worship is very different from it's Eastern counterpart. For one, deification is far more common in the West (European zone) than the East (Asia). Western practices essentially regard the vaunted ancestor as a demigod or outright godly being. For the Celts the deceased are considered to above crossed into the Otherworld where, if they achieved some success in life or were of adequate standing, would be elevated to a greater position within the Otherworld realm. They didn't exactly grant favors or anything of the sort but it was believed they could lend some of their power to their descendants and perhaps even aid them in small ways. The Norse and Germans had their own version of the Otherworld in Valhalla where the rules were similar but more strict. The ancestors there were generally uninterested in moral affairs.
