    Thank you, this made the job very easy! My JB940 developed this issue and at first I thought I had no chance of bringing it back. Found your video, found the new belt online, replaced it yesterday and it’s working perfectly. I have already started using Audacity to get some recordings from my discs that I know I can’t ever get anywhere. I’m a happy camper! Many thanks!!!!

    Followed your procedures exactly, worked perfectly, thanks. MD now working as it should. I did not need to remove the data cables, I used a wife instead holding the mech open as I looped the new belt on. Invaluable!

      Update: As i said, after the replacement of the loading belt the deck worked perfectly - for about four days. Now I've got more problems. Today suddenly the deck does not respond when the start button is pressed. The indicator glows proving that the power is there, but all I get is a tiny red "TOC" symbol flashing on the display. Further investigation might be beyond my powers.

    Once again a big thank you Nick for your video and for you support, belt changed easy the player now eject the disc nice and smooth. 😀
    Also I have changed the belt for the Sony SACD player. The tray opens and close perfect.
    Keep up the good work!

    I trashed my JB940 deck by following the advice given in this video. It should have been made clear that you remove the transport ONLY as a last resort and that the belt can be changed without taking that risk. I bought another JB940 on eBay and am happy at last. It has taught me an expensive lesson.

      @racl1954 Місяць тому +1

      Hi Alan. sorry to hear you had the same problem that I had. My deck was trashed too and it is clear that the transport does not need to be removed to change the belt. You only have to slightly damage one of the ribbons while removing and reinstalling the transport and the deck will no longer work.
      I asked the UA-camr to update his video but he obviously did not. If he had have you would have been saved from trashing your deck by following the video. PS. Keep your old deck for spares. You never know when you will need a component that could fail in the future on the new deck.

      @@AlanJan_UK_49 I have found a good electronics engineering company who are going to look at my one, replace the ribbons and give it a service. I think it is worth the trouble as my one looks like it just come off the production line.
      This isn't the first time I have followed some twats video and ruined a piece of equipment. I had the same thing happen to my Roland synth with a video tutorial from a prat who did not know what he was doing and shared his crap online to show others how to screw their keyboards up.

      @@AlanJan_UK_49 Hi Alan. I did take some time finding this company and was lucky that they are local. One of the reasons for my suing them is I have an old 1970s Sansui 9090 receiver that I want them to service. It was difficult finding anyone local that I could completely trust with this relic. I am taking both in to be serviced the first week after Christmas. I will let you know how I get on.

    The drive seems to be identical to my Je640, thougt the QS series might use more advanced one. The main difference seems to be the linear powers supply(at least i think so) with a R core transformer where my has a simple Switch mode board.

    I have 2 decks from different generations, and 1 still works good, the other same issue. With the amount of mini disc decks that Sony made I have no idea why they couldn't make a better eject mechanism

  • @racl1954
    @racl1954 2 роки тому +1

    Hi Nick. Thanks for sharing this.
    I have the same player that had the same problem as yours. The disc wouldn't eject but it was playing OK. Just stuck in the tray. I removed the disc tray the same way that you did.
    When I replaced it back as it was, it wouldn't work. I just get a continual clicking noise as described below by another owner who has the same clicking problem.
    I didn't do any rough handed work. I even wore an anti static wrist strap while working on it. You have mentioned below in one of your answers to a question that it could be "the relay that turns on/off power to the main circuit/display, controlled by a microcontroller and its own small power supply."...........As I said my one was working OK until I changed the small belt.
    Do you have any idea what the problem could be ?. I am thinking maybe I have damaged a ribbon. In hindsight I should have left the disc tray in the until and not removed it. It is quit easy to change the belt without removing the tray mechanism and risking damaging the ribbons.

    • @nicksmith4507
      @nicksmith4507  2 роки тому

      Sadly I don't have any great advice. You could be right that it might be safer not to disconnect the cables if you can access everything you need to. Can you hear exactly where the click is coming from? Does the main display turn on? If so, that would imply that it's not a short that is stopping that. Have you taken the cables out again and check with a magnifier for any obvious damage?

      @@nicksmith4507 Hi Nick.
      Please go the other route and advise a solution where the mechanism and ribbon cables do not need to be disconnected. My player was literally trashed following this advice. I have ended up paying £80.00 + to have mine repaired with new ribbon cables and a board component that was damaged. I paid this as my player is in mint condition.
      Changing the belt does not require removing any mechanism or disconnection of ribbon cables.
      Please update your video. It is misleading.

      @@nicksmith4507 I had no idea which is why I went on to UA-cam looking for the advice offered by those that think they know better to a point where they put up instructional videos showing others how to do something.
      This change of belt routine may have worked for you but it is not good advice for others.
      I am not ham fisted or careless. I followed your instruction carefully.
      My point is the job could have been done without dismantling anything and risking any damage.

    Hi there I have a mds jb940 with no power when I switch it on there is no power but there's a clicking sound Coming from a black box in between the two transformers. Any ideas what it could be please. I'm in North Wales UK

    • @nicksmith4507
      @nicksmith4507  3 роки тому

      The click is from the relay that turns on/off power to the main circuit/display, controlled by a microcontroller and its own small power supply. More than that, I can't say, I am afraid - it would take some careful analysis of the schematic and testing at various points in the circuit.

      @@cornelbaluta I am not familiar with that model but general suggestions: have a look inside and check belts for degredation or cogs that have become cracked or broken. If there is old lubricant, that can sometimes become hard and needs to be removed. There may be a sensor switch that is triggered at the wrong point or not at all.

    May I ask what grease do you use, alway unsure of what to use on this stuff. My 940 started to not eject today it will take the disc but won't come out so I assume my belt might be going. Where did you source the belt?

    • @nicksmith4507
      @nicksmith4507  3 роки тому +1

      I have used some clear silicone grease in the past but sometimes it seems a bit too sticky. I got some different white grease but I can't remember what it is exactly (label came off the tin) and that's less viscous. You can always try a spot of light oil too: just a thin coating is all that should be necessary. As for the belt, just search eBay for the model number: it should come back with some hits.
