How do I replace the on/off switch? Thanks
Thanks for posting this. it provided a great overview of the machine. I have 2 of them, one to run some old software, and one as a backup. Lots of useful information.
What do you run? There didn't seem to be very much interesting stuff anymore when I last looked. I would have liked to run AVS or HP's optimising C++ compiler but they are not free anyhow.
It turned out that the belts had been replaced recently, so I was wrong to be suspicous of their slackness - it must be normal.
ok, ok, I am asking someone smart, is there such a thing as Red Mercury Vacuum Tubes? please help ;-) im serious bro. Andy
Sony - unscrew lid, change belts, put lid back. Panasonic - unscrew lid, unsolder about 8 tiny joints, remove motor, change belts, refit motor, resolder joints, put lid back on, hope it still works.
I have a wired one and the mic stopped working. I suspect that the mic's wire is torn or solder inside is off. Seems like a design flaw with rolling mic setup.
Ma fallo suonare coglione...
J'ai possédez cette amplificateur et je l'ai gardé 6 mois le rendu et pauvre et un grand manque de clarté et surtout l alimentation et fait
I trashed my JB940 deck by following the advice given in this video. It should have been made clear that you remove the transport ONLY as a last resort and that the belt can be changed without taking that risk. I bought another JB940 on eBay and am happy at last. It has taught me an expensive lesson.
Hi Alan. sorry to hear you had the same problem that I had. My deck was trashed too and it is clear that the transport does not need to be removed to change the belt. You only have to slightly damage one of the ribbons while removing and reinstalling the transport and the deck will no longer work. I asked the UA-camr to update his video but he obviously did not. If he had have you would have been saved from trashing your deck by following the video. PS. Keep your old deck for spares. You never know when you will need a component that could fail in the future on the new deck.
@@racl1954 Thanks. I was gutted when I wrecked my deck ( unnecessarily ) but am delighted to have an exact replacement. Yes, I've kept the old one just in case.
@@AlanJan_UK_49 I have found a good electronics engineering company who are going to look at my one, replace the ribbons and give it a service. I think it is worth the trouble as my one looks like it just come off the production line. This isn't the first time I have followed some twats video and ruined a piece of equipment. I had the same thing happen to my Roland synth with a video tutorial from a prat who did not know what he was doing and shared his crap online to show others how to screw their keyboards up.
@@racl1954 That sounds good. If you use them and find them good do please let me know. I have an excellent Audiolab 8000Q preamp that needs the lid off but after my MD efforts I'm steering clear !
@@AlanJan_UK_49 Hi Alan. I did take some time finding this company and was lucky that they are local. One of the reasons for my suing them is I have an old 1970s Sansui 9090 receiver that I want them to service. It was difficult finding anyone local that I could completely trust with this relic. I am taking both in to be serviced the first week after Christmas. I will let you know how I get on. Is there a way that I can contact you without going through the UA-cam Chat which could get lost along the way ?.
Sony amps are crap
Never heard a Sony VFet amp?
I have the same amp, in black, and I've recently had a similar problem an removed it from my PC desktop system. I'm not technical but seeing this gives me some hope I can sort it. I assumed it was relays but seems it might not be so. Thanks, even if I can't fix it. Least I have a little hope.
Hope you can fix it. Let us know how you get on!
I have this amp, a really nicely made design.. handy info to have thanks. 4:37 On that phono board there's some space for what looks like a long switch or variable control and another socket, any idea what that was for?
Well spotted. I wondered about that too. In the old days I might have guessed the switch would be to change moving coil to moving magnet or ceramic pickup. The socket outline looked even more mysterious, so I open to ideas. There didn't seem to be any option on the schematic. Perhaps if I wasn't in a bit of a rush I could have traced the additional circuit from the board.
@@nicksmith4507 Yeah I guess it might be a switch for selecting cartridge types, these amps were the ES range and some were additionally labelled as 'UK Tuned' or similar, where they apparently optimised some of their higher end seperates for the UK market. Maybe this was an option for that.
@@Dedubya- I have never really known what "UK tuned" meant. IMHO amps shouldn't sound like anything, rather just invisible with power gain. Don't want to start an audiophile argument, you understand :-) Now, in this phono board components R150, L150, L151 (plus right channel equivalents) are noted as not present in UK, SP, MY models. Actually they *are* there in mine, but are shorted out with JW11. They would just provide some HF rolloff.
They should have done that from the factory. Nice work! Looks much better that way
Sorry, I missed how chrony is getting the 1PPS data? Is that wired up using your front panel 1PPS signal to, e.g., some GPIO input, or are you using the DCD signal on the serial port? Note that you'll likely see a bunch of jitter on the 1PPS signal due to how USB transfers work, wasting some of the precision available to you with the 1PPS signal from most GPS receivers. On the other hand, if you're only worried about sub-millisecond accuracy, maybe don't bother? You can make yourself crazy chasing the microseconds here.. In that regime, you need a GPS receiver fancy enough to specify the cable length delay to the antenna to account for those extra nanoseconds. Thanks for the making the video about your project! I certainly appreciate the alarm feature that you added; it demonstrates a little bit of the unhealthy fascination that some of us have about precision timekeeping. Next thing you know, you''ll be hanging about at midnight UTC when a leap second is inserted to see what happens with your GPS receiver and NTP code..
I made the video rather quickly when I wasn't completely well, so missed some details in retrospect. Yes, you are quite correct about USB not being a good choice due to jitter. I chose the DCD handshaking line of a real RS232 socket on my Dell desktop computer (but USB adaptor to laptop for configuration). The uBlox software seems to have a cable delay option you can use to compensate for cable length. I guess that's a second order obsession I might get into later, worrying about velocity factors, the jitter of the linux kernel responding to hardware handshake transitions... but I had better finish some other projects first :-)
I also like to have all important locations lighted for observation - it is good idea.
I just replaced all caps on my sa-620 but the circuit boards have no letter/number marking for the different components, which makes service a challenge unless you're an experienced tech. I don't know why Pioneer did this. I have other Kenwood & Sansui amps and tuners and they all have marked designations for most of the different components.
Good markings certainly help. I have an idea that it got easier for PCB designers to do this when more CAD came in: the first boards were completely manual. Also we can get many Service Manuals for free now as PDFs. Back in the day, you had to pay some money to buy them. Sony manuals were good but I remember being shocked when Mitsubishi refused to sell me a manual for my expensive HiFi VCR.
Great stuff! I've wanted to make my own GPS disciplined clock for a while now and your video will be a great reference. Subbed!
For me the hardest thing was to get the RS232 cable/polarity correct. Every time I get something wrong first time!
Thanks for this video. May I ask why you changed the capacitors to non-polarised types? (C8 & C11)
Yep: there is a thought in the audio community that electrolytics can introduce distortions in the audio chain. You can get "audio grade" (more expensive) parts. Whether or not it is really true they affect the sound, I am not sure. Marginal at best for my ears. Anyway, I had the components in my spares stock so thought I would replace them.
@@nicksmith4507 Thanks for the response. In regards to the inductors that you made, how do you match them to the types on the board?
@@gregoru98 They only need to be very approximately the same, since they are just used to suppress high frequency instability and RF pickup, not for any exact tuned circut. I think I just tried to make them visually similar size/turns to ones I had seen in a later Arcam Alpha. They turned out to be close enough when I measured the inductance.
@@nicksmith4507 Thanks so much Nick. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I have an Alpha 2 and am looking into some of the upgrades you have mentioned. Thanks again.
I had also non working mic and tried to open it like in your Video. Unfortunately the ring on mine is completely glued on and doesnt pop out. Instead it broke the plastic on different places...
Hi very interesting video I have the same model in your video the spring you filled the wrong way the big part of the spring goes to the clutch the black disc goes on the top and there is very small washer which locks in place your cassette black disc have a crack on the side that's way it came out what you need is new Panasonic RQ-SX75 clutch retaining disc, That will fix it as you
Shortly after posting I found the instructions for my test tape and it turns out what I thought was 300 Hz tone was 315 Hz for some reason, so I had to re-tune the motor speed.
You have to desolder the main board, you didn't need to take the whole mechanism out..
EEEUUUUUUMMMMMM TO MUCH
The architecture of the Visualize fx cards are covered in HP Journal from May 1998. Not mentioned in the article, but one of the things I remember about it is that a bunch of the chips in the fx cards are just additional specialized PA-RISC processors.
I had never thought about that but I suppose it makes sense: HP already had a good compute core so why not plonk it into a specialist package.
Hi, First of all love your videos reminds me why we got into this format even though it has mostly been forgotten there is something we all love about Minidisc that adds to any system. A little while ago I bought a JB940 Sony from the UK as I am in Australia to replace my other unit, That was just too past it to fix . I received it and changed the plug for Australian electrical and it seemed fine for a while (3 years)just recently when it gets turned on it just tics No display and just wont power up properly as you have dealt and fixed many minidiscs could you share some light on what might be the problem I do have a very good repair place that I use that I could send to JVP Service Centre in marrickville nsw but if it is something you thought I could tackle Myself that would be good. Thank you Look forward to your response Dennis
Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately it's going to be hard to make any helpful comment. I don't have as much experience as you think. In general terms though, the first thing I would check is the power supply: check you are getting expected AC onto the main board via CN403, CN404. Check the DC output from regulators IC400, IC401, IC402. Try to isolate if something sround those has gone bad or something they feed has shorted pulling a whole supply rail down. Good luck.
Amazing!!! Where did you order the belt part?
I just searched eBay with "MDS-JB940 belt". You should get some hits :-)
Thanks for the memories! Back in the late 90's / early 2000's I was in charge of a network of CAM workstations that ran HP-UX. The last HP-UX machines I bought were HP C3000's and HP C3600's running HP-UX 10.11 if I recall. Around 2004 our CAM software was ported to Linux so I switched over to Red Hat machines in 2005 and relegated the old HP workstations to terminals for manufacturing machines out on the shop floor. Even though the OLD workstations were workhorses the Linux machines were an order of magnitude faster in all regards and cost 25% of what the HP machines did. Having said that, in 2007 I had a Dell RAID server running Red Hat that corrupted the whole disk array due to a firmware issue in the RAID controller. I'm confident something like that wouldn't have happened on an HP RISC-based machine.
One of my customers stil has a bunch of PA-RISC servers still running in their enterprise... sometimes good engineering refuses to die.
Hey Nick was wondering how you put the ear cups back
I don't think there was any particuar trick - just carefully stretech around, using some fingers to hold in place the first section, then rotate so you can keep stretching around the next bit. It will be frustrating at first but eventually you will be able to get it all on without the first bit slipping off.
Well done tackling the input switches. It's still a great looking amplifier. Thanks for sharing this.
Thank you, this made the job very easy! My JB940 developed this issue and at first I thought I had no chance of bringing it back. Found your video, found the new belt online, replaced it yesterday and it’s working perfectly. I have already started using Audacity to get some recordings from my discs that I know I can’t ever get anywhere. I’m a happy camper! Many thanks!!!!
Cool!
I have the exact same model with the exact same problem. I also have sausage fingers, no idea about electronics, or have the tools you have. If I can send you mine, can you fix it? I'll happily pay you to fix it of course
If you prise the ear cup off at the opposite side to what you did in the video it does not break the lug/hole if you are careful. @ 1min onwards. Use a flat blade screwdriver and push it in till it pop off.
Hi Nick. All inputs HDMI inputs have blown and no longer work on that model...Any advice for me please?
I don't know but would suspect something serious on the board that would probably need the entire board replaced 😢
Thanks Nick @@nicksmith4507
The same thing happened to my TS100 while I been ill for some time and not used it for ages it just lost it's brightness it's a mystery why as it's been sealed in it's case ? I have linked to your video as when I get a new display I have to follow your tutorial.
Yeah that is indeed perplexing how it could fail without extended "on time".
cool stuff! Today I cleaned up my hp C3600 "Bastille HP-UX 11.11 Jumpbox", setup & used back in 2007 for a T-Mobile project where we deployed a very swanky Sun Cluster WAP gateway. Due to good T-Mobile IT Security constraints (no data out possible from the attached T-Mobile admin linux boxes in Bonn HQ). I used this workstation for reverse tunneling (I am Civil Engineer ...) from one of the WAP Gateway Front-End Server when connected to the internet "home", so I could finally 'grep' the complex system configuration for documentations. I again forgot root password after longer no use, and due to "Bastille" security setup it is a quite tricky thing to reset root password, especially 'cos I havn't touched HP-UX for centuries. But finally I could fix it. Think I got nearly 10 boxes (plus 3 a-class servers, but also several x86 VISUALIZE X-CLASS & X4000 Workstations) of these brave nuclear attack prune PA-RISC HEWLETT PACKARD Workstations. (HEWLETT PACKARD & its "HP-Way" rest in peace) My C3600 got the fx10+ GA and 2 IBM 9 GB Drives.

Hi Nick, I've been watching this and your last video with great interest because it seems to be the only video about a hp-risc machine that involves graphics output and hp-ux on youtube :D I'm currently trying to get a HP Visualize FX10 pro to work in my HP3000 A500 server, which seems to be the exact same hardware as a HP9000 A500 server. And these machines share the same architecture of the C-Series workstations. I just could not manage to get the console redirected to the graphics card and also none of my USB PCI cards seem to be recognized by the system... Could you maybe take a look into your machine and try to find out which kind of USB controller chip it is using? Because without USB I have no way to connect a keyboard to my machine since it has no PS/2 or USB connectors onboard. I'd be very thankful :)
I have a C3600 that boots CDE I can post a video later this week. I did some disk cloning that I should probably document for other people.
@@joetoney184Nice! Looking very much forward to it :) I sold the Visualize FX10 already. I have done some research and it turns out that HP3000 machines are firmware locked to be "minicomputer" equivalents only. It is impossible to output the console through local graphics and input on a local keyboard. So if anyone is looking to do this with one of these incredibly rare machines there you go. Will not work. Get a serial terminal, thats the only way to interact with it besides the LOM.
@@audiocrush, I do not know which card I have but it's a single slot VGA card and it acts as a serial terminal if the monitor and keyboard is connected until HP UX boots. For CDE to start after booting you need to have a mouse connected or X11 will complain and fail to start.
So, so long since I installed and used HPUX on anything I’m not remembering any of this 😂 That would’ve been on Stratus/Ascend/Lucent DNCP machines rather than actual HP kit, soon after the turn of the century.
Hi Nick, I don't have any HP-UX 11iv2 software but I do have some 11iv1 CD-ROMs including application software, from 2005
You might consider uploading to archive.org to share the history.
hp just did their own thing . the gfx sandwich was display out ramdac / framebuffer card with texture processers daughterboard .
I would like to find some "free" software that actually makes use of it, not just a text console.
@@nicksmith4507 Debian has a pretty mature PA-Risc distro. I had it running on an older c110 although I was never able to get X-windows running. The fancy GFX card wouldn't work with the Debian framebuffer driver. I used a C3600 for Unigraphics back in the early 2000s for a time just at the tail end of their use. We moved to UG on Windows XP 64-bit on HP XW8200s initially. All HP workstation are really impressive bits of kit. Just tanks. Hi, thanks for this good video ! do you have any idea to fix the small plastic piece here at 1min21 ua-cam.com/video/9rXG-q4isHs/v-deo.html when its totally broken or even missing/lost ?
If you have the piece you might try some PVC weld adhesive. I have had good results on other things: it dissolves the two bits of plastic a bit and seems stronger when dried than super glue.
Thank you man!. But vp150 battery has 150mAh capacity. And original have 500mah capacity. This change dont work for the long time. After some charge-recharge cycles you have error battery again. Use battery capacity 500mah and more then. I use 700 mah 4xAA 4.8v battery for example GP T393.
I just wanted to say your idea of how you made the replacement brakes was pure genius! Well done!
Fit a silicone belt it will never go bad again
Where do you get one from ?
I have 2 decks from different generations, and 1 still works good, the other same issue. With the amount of mini disc decks that Sony made I have no idea why they couldn't make a better eject mechanism
Great vid was in exactly the same place with my Lab server. Replacement battery again worthless upon receipt. I thought about dumping the Battery altogether but that of course disables Array expansion. I installed the same battery as as you have, except i also added a battery connector so if i ever need to swap again its just a pull and replace. Sure the batteries are not of the same spec but it seems to take ok. Having never soldered anything I wasn't sure how id get on but it seems to be good and I've just added an additional 2 drives and its extending happily to itself !! Cheers Mutchly
