Got one love it, The tiny mini discs in multiple colours are great and the bonus of being able to edit your tracks which the player reads and displays is so good. 👍
3:47 no, it is not that either. it is the write head, a laser below the disc heats a spot to its Curie point, making the material in the disc susceptible to a magnetic field. A magnetic head above the disc then alters the polarity of the heated area, recording the digital data onto the disk. Playback is accomplished with the laser alone.
@@pwrestoration - it’s completely protected inside of the case and under that shroud you removed. Normally no one goes inside these except techs who should all know better. Now you do! 😉
That battery, a rechargeable 3v VL2020 (listed as BT301 on page 79 of the Sony Service manual) should be replaced. It provides a constant voltage to the IC made for controlling the TOC. Without it, the chip will act wonky. Sometimes, they use a 1f 5v super capacitor.
I have this same one, this particular model is infamous for the switches corroding internally. Soak them all in Deoxit, work them 50+ times each, usually all they need to start working.
I’ll try to do this to fix a C5 unit, this is useful. I got into MD and I bought so many recorders, that it was inevitable that some of them need cleaning and servicing. In 2024, Minidisc makes more sense than in 2008.
to adjust things you unplug the power from the wall socket then push and hold the rotary switch plug it in and hit the power button it will go in to service mode all adjustments are done digitally
Ah thanks for the tip! After some trials and recording a few albums today, I can confirm that it's running great. No need for adjustments at the moment, it was just dirty 😄
Mini disc was a great idea good to see you got this one working ,mine are all personal players/recorders though i do have a Japanese import Kenwood mdx f1 a boombox with cd tape radio and minidisc the cd player was meant to be faulty and the rest all working but to date i have not tested it as it needs a 100 volt stepdown transformer before i can test it ,being a boombox type device i figured it would take battery's as well .I was wrong it was electric only to date it is still untested .
I got an MD player in my old car, recently it seemed there was something preventing the disc from going into the slot, there was something just inside the slot on the right hand side stopping the disc, there are no foreign objects in the machine... I can get the disc to go in if I push the eject button, whatever is preventing it must shift out the way... But, the display then says RESET and it won't fire up.. I did manage to get it working briefly and all tracks were playing, so there can't be anything major wrong with the unit... Sadly I can't recall what I did to get it working, but the fault came back anyway
No, it did have a Ford radio cassette but I replaced it with a Sony radio MD unit. Has been fine for years, but a couple of days ago after removing a disc it started making a whirring noise and I couldn't get the next disc in the slot, only way to get it in was to hold it in the opening of the slot and when the whirring stopped it will take the disc, after that it would say RESET on the front panel and then turn off.. Whilst playing around with it I did get the disc to start playing, skipped forward through all the tracks no problem, but after taking the disc out it started playing up again and I can't remember what I did to get it working... The strangest thing is not being able to push the disc in without pressing the eject button, there's something just on the inside stopping it from going in... Shame cos I really liked this Sony unit and Have no desire to replace with new fangled gear, I'm old and my interest in gadgetry like this ended with the introduction of CD's, don't know what Bluetooth is and don't have the inclination to find out... sure it's wonderful but what the eye doesn't see the heart doesn't grieve over
hold on are you doing a QED turntable with glass platter ? because with this and the tape player you have my set up from back in the day throw in an arcam amp and CD and you litterally have it !!!!
So i have the exact minidisc player most discs olay with sound but 10 discs will either play and but have no audio while the rest while some just say error or wont play the disc but the rest of my minidiscs will play and play the audio so im asking anyone some help by asking do u think it could be just the 10 minidosvs have gone bad as the reat play ok and is there anyway to get the audio to olay from the bad discs or should i just bin the bad discs
It sounds like it's more your disks have failed than the player. Unless they're important, you could always pickup a cheap portable player to test the theory
I took my disk tray out cleaned it,the little arm just rattles like its stuck I move it manually to the right to try to reset it but all it does is eject the minidisc can anyone help!
For the love of all that’s holy, do *NOT* use lithium grease on plastic parts. Lithium grease will degrade plastic over time!!! Use silicon grease for plastic on plastic parts. Only use lithium grease for metal on metal.
hi have had alot of mini discs units over time the mini buttons the discs goe's down on stop working right they have grease in them and it goe's very hard over time i will say the yamaha d24 is super deck i have 2 and if the drive goe's down easy to find a new seal scsi one to fit it the thing is i had 5 je530 decks only 2 left working now drive all went bad over time scsi mo drives units are better in the long run akai dd8 as well
it only finalize the recordings once you push the eject button the the red TOC indicater will turn off !!!! you need to learn a lot about mini disk my friend

Thanks for this.
Mine was doing the same thing on power up. The manufacturer date on my unit is Dec. 1865. Haha!

Ah wow thanks! It's not very well protected for something so important!

I've seen a few with the rotational selector faulty from just that, usually sell dirt cheap too. Not a bad player really just not a lot to them

Interesting, is it a factory fit?

It flashes Standby because that battery inside is dead. It's a rechargeable battery, there are replacements still available.
War denn die eingelegte minidisc nun tatsächlich leer oder bespielt?
Can't honestly remember, recorded I think

I don't but if I find one I'll buy it!
I love the futuristic feel of MD. Some vaporware artists are still releasing music on it.
Honestly it's really hit me how convenient they actually are. I think they're the most convenient digital format!

I got one I change the belts it read some mini disc and some it doesn't can u tell me what could be the problem
I'm afraid my crystal ball needs belts changing 😅
Could be anything pal.
Can someone help me please, I have a Sony mds 50 & it is stuck in stand by only the red light is on and no power .Thanks in advance
It could be a lot of things, the secondary power transformer, the power button, internal issues etc
Just for clarity in case anyone needs it. When he talks about cleaning with IPA. That's isopropyl alcohol. Not Indian pale ale.🎉
great job thank you for a good video

I have one, I have error messages cr13, the disc will not eject..
Any engineer in london available, at a reasonable price
Probably just a lens clean, or something stuck in there.
What you are refering to as a flimpsy switch is not a switch it is the record head for the disk

I'm aware of that 👍🏻
completely empty
DO NOT CLEAN any of the writing with IPA chance of it rubbing off,
Not this time, live dangerously my friend
Более тупого, бесполезного смазки и чистки нет в интернете.
Только протёр линзу - нормально.
Just wiped the lens, it's fine. Beautifully written in cryllic. The rest was for preventative maintenance later.
Mine gets stuck in toc reading and then the little arm clicks back and forth in one spot and ejects the disc
Maybe a quick laser clean could be the answer
