I am in Fort Meyers, FL visiting my parents this week. As my mom and I were walking this morning, we saw a camper that said McCann Dogs and an Ontario license plate. I so wanted to stop in and introduce myself because I am so grateful for all of the training I've learned from your channel. Our Sophie is such a well behaved 7 month old Shih-tzu and I tell everyone it is all because of McCann Dogs.
Sidenote: I, of course, would not actually stop by...that would be awkward, to say the least. 😂

Useful for picking the right breed, but how do you pick the right puppy when you are faced with a basket full of cuteness? Any tips for reading what the future character or health of the different puppies might be?
Healthwise you need to look at the parents. Obviously, any proper breeder will only match healthy pairs, and have the paperwork to prove it. In terms of character, it's better to go for the "middle ground" puppy from the litter. These personality traits they have at 6-8 weeks will be the foundation for anything in the future so it's not something they just grow out of on their own. The shy, fearful ones are often looked as the cute ones who need constant cuddling, but with or without cuddles they can have issues with anxiety later on which can be a real struggle. The overly confident ones who might dominate their siblings all the time are the opposite end of the spectrum. This doesn't mean that they will definitely be like that later on, but they will need a lot of socialization from the get-go, otherwise things can go south really fast.
So what you want when you go take a look at a litter is first and foremost to look at them interacting with each other and their mum. See these "power plays" among them. You want a playful puppy but one who is mindful about their siblings' boundaries too. They learn a lot from each other so if you see an 8 week old puppy who nips and doesn't take no for an answer, that's not necessarily a good sign. The reason why it's important to look at them first without interacting with them is mainly human psychology; if a puppy "picks you", it's REALLY hard not to take it as a 'love at first sight" moment, and then nothing else matters.
If you see multiple puppies in the litter who are very much middle ground, go interact with them and see which one is the cutest to you. Which one pays attention to you? Which one wants to go to your lap, be around you, be picked up? Which one is the most curious of you?
@@vanclemmons amazing thank you, this is super helpful. Our last dog was a 1.5y/o rescue and turned out to be extremely loving but extremely anxious. As fun as it was, it would be good to have one that's a bit less high maintenance
@@exit_perry oh I absolutely understand. The trick with the whole decision making is that even if you know to look for these things, it can still be very difficult. I think we humans when we look at puppies, especially when the moment comes to make a decision, and we are faced with a litter of cuteness, we tend to see those pups like human babies who need constant care, attention, love, presence. And sometimes when a shy puppy comes to us and feels comfortable with us, and only cares about us, it makes us feel special but that can also mean down the line, that they _only_ feel safe with us. Which if you think about what it really means, is not so fluffy and fun.

Very good point! I faced with situation when many people take hunting dogs, and expect to have "house dog", and after they are really surprised when their house is destroyed
