He lists everything gradually throughout the video, so grab your pencil and paper and enjoy. If you have to re-watch; more views are the best way to repay his kindness anyways. There are lots of great details in there from someone experienced in making. I know from a little experience myself that every little thing he tells us in the video has importance. I think the only things he doesn't mention is that the screws are torx head (not vital, but great for speed and not stripping like phillips but if you have exterior phillips, by all means...) and exterior grade (vital). I wouldn't overspend on the screws. Get a cardboard box like the one you see him use; you can buy expensive ones in plastic containers that may be worth it if you are building a something like a deck, but they'd almost certainly outlast this box since it's not safe to seal like a deck. I put food-safe oil on the outside of my cedar box just to slow down the graying. It will rot from the inside out eventually.
I don't waste my time on videos that don't have a cut list and a materials list and plans. There are too many videos out there, and I don't want to waste my time.
@@MCLBC This is the best one I’ve seen. It’s by far the lowest amount of money spent for the largest amount of plantable area. Have you found a better one? He doesn’t owe you a thing; a video let alone a cut list. You sound entitled. Maybe you should appreciate the work he put into this video that cost you nothing.

Nice video man, ignore all these people complaining about a cut and material list. That's the simple stuff. I mean obviously you use fence plaques. The real money is in the design you did, which will have the ideal amount of dirt or pots. Also nice of you to share some wisdom or two while you're building it.

Great video. I used deck screws (no rust) and also a waterproof glue. Built these before and they last for years. Finnish with what you want. I never do.

Few potential issues, first you need the cut some boards on the backside of the legs. In framing referred as jack studs. When this bed is filled with loam, eventually the weight will cause failure with this. The screws are for fastening purposes, nut for structural support. Cedar is a great choice for the project as far as its outdoor qualities, but is brittle and not a good structural wood. With that being said, I would also use cedar with just some structural fixes in the fabrication. Also using and outdoor type of adhesion will help with strength.

Thank you for this. We needed a planter box but didn’t want to pay a bunch for one. Watched a lot of vids, this one was easy to follow, uncomplicated l, and as someone who is a total zero with this kind of stuff, I was able to make a box in about 3 hours and under 100 bucks in materials (California prices). Good work on the video thank you so very much for putting in the time to make this.

Hi. I love the design. Super pretty. Surprising my wife. But i can’t imagine this holding a 1000lbs. Love to know if anyone’s filled it yet. But since I like it my “ idea” is underneath after I placed it where I want, I’m going to make like a rectangle shape underneath of it made of 4x4s and 2x4’ or 2x6’s to hold the weight of the dirt. But I’m no construction guy. Anyone has better idea please share. 😊
Nice video. 2 questions. After dirt is added they’ll be heavy. Do you feel the legs are strong enough? ( as opposed to 4x4’s) 2. In other videos I’ve watched some people commented about some center support for them bulging out. Thanks and excellent instructions/ video!
The legs are plenty strong, to support the weight of a filled box. The only failure point I can see is pushing or pulling laterally against the planter. 4x4's would just increase the cost unnecessarily imho.
Jerry i used a 2x3 in the center at the top to keep it from pushing out the sides in the middle.

i see this failing after a couple years when the cedar loosens up. dirt is heavy but wet dirt is even heavier. i used 4x4 and don’t regret it. that box fully loaded if someone or something where to hit that box to the side it would come crashing down with those pickets being the support.
Im a grower look at the pots your plants are coming from their probably root bound already so make sure your building a box a little larger than pot your plants are already in? If you’re plant in 10or12 inch pot build something double the pots size or larger

Menards usually has a fairly good selection. The trick is to wait until they restock for the spring…

No glue used. If you wanted to, you'd probably need a construction adhesive or exterior rated glue

will these hold about 125lbs of soil? I plan on lining with 4ft wide landscape fabric as well.
It holds me, and I weigh 200lbs...

Maybe my calculations are wrong, but this would be holding over 1000lb of soil at about .5 cubic yd.. Will this hold?
@@htown860 ha. Funny. I’m finishing this build myself now. Was going to make it a lil wider. Maybe 34 inches. And I’ve also made mine 3 pickets tall. As in googling it says vegetable plants like at least 12 + inches. I am honestly afraid to fill this now. That’s alotta fucking weight.
Yeah I have a client that wants six of these... I don't want to build them only for them to fail. But if I have to use thicker material, my original quote will be too low.
How well do the fence pickets stand up as legs?
I have a 2x3 version in my backyard, two years no problems. I wouldn’t recommend dragging them around though…

@@codyshelcusky7284 the 1 1/4 screws are used only to hold the corner pieces together for the 4 legs. All face screws are 1".
Did anyone get a approximate amount pickets needed to build one of these?
He said 14 boards, but that's based on size of the planter. Clearly with his style it would be limited by the picket size you use.
