Applying mineral oil to newly crafted cutting boards
See those right angle gaps at the outer corners, you could fit legs in there with stylish round knobs on the top. Make those on your lathe. Just sayin' 🙃
Hello MRW, That's a four prong drive centre which fits into the morse taper in the lathe spindle- no doubt you know that now 2 years later. I didn't get a good look at the one you have, but sometimes if they come with your lathe they are garbage, but there are tons of good ones to be had if you shop around. I've seen a few youtubers putting them into the headstock, lining up the workpiece centre marks and winding down HARD on the tailstock wheel to get the 4 prong drive centre to engage, which makes me cringe when you think of the unnecessary load being exerted on the bearings. I mark the timber centre, line up the centre point and thump it into the wood (spindles and crossgrain) with a mallet to avoid damaging the end of the morse taper. You're left with four prominent marks in the wood allowing you to locate on any four locations, without all of the horrible heavy tailstock winding. Blah Blah, , , just sayin' 🙃
If I'm applying it to a painted wood surface will that keep the grain from raising again?
Hickory is incredible! That tables grain was incredible.
Looks pretty thick to me.
0:10 8 ball: i’m in danger
unfortunately most of the action takes place off camera
where is cue ball?
Goes to a different place on these tables.
I would like to had more information about the hardness and adhesion.
Great project, terrible youtube thumbnail. Had a hard time going back and finding it.
I made one of these garden boxes. Your directions were perfect and I cannot wait to make more of them.
Just discovered your channel while looking into making some low dollar, planters with the cedar planks I saw outside of Home Depot the other day. I'm diggin' this "series". Might be a bit more fiddley for assembly but you could pre-drill and screw the sides together first and hide the fasteners under the trim pieces. I'll bet these planters would look slick with all of the fasteners hidden.
Not a bad idea, might have to give that a try!
I cant watch.
Noooooo! That beautiful wood is ruined!
That’s ok, I made a smaller one and left the natural cedar finish!
thanks
thanks
Coming sense pending how bug you want it?
Big
Nice video man, ignore all these people complaining about a cut and material list. That's the simple stuff. I mean obviously you use fence plaques. The real money is in the design you did, which will have the ideal amount of dirt or pots. Also nice of you to share some wisdom or two while you're building it.
Nice job, buddy. Just gave me a project to do this weekend. Thanks
Did anyone get a approximate amount pickets needed to build one of these?
He said 14 boards, but that's based on size of the planter. Clearly with his style it would be limited by the picket size you use.
Why do you press soooo hard when putting your screws in?
Great video. I used deck screws (no rust) and also a waterproof glue. Built these before and they last for years. Finnish with what you want. I never do.
This dude dont mess around. Power handled that project like a pro, incredible job. Also appreciate the tool tip and the time you took, good work!
Nice.
Nice project, too much talking, and maybe fast forward through some of the repetitive steps. We really don't need to watch you drive 3 dozen screws into boards.
Thumbnail made it look like a “build your own coffin” video, lol.
Few potential issues, first you need the cut some boards on the backside of the legs. In framing referred as jack studs. When this bed is filled with loam, eventually the weight will cause failure with this. The screws are for fastening purposes, nut for structural support. Cedar is a great choice for the project as far as its outdoor qualities, but is brittle and not a good structural wood. With that being said, I would also use cedar with just some structural fixes in the fabrication. Also using and outdoor type of adhesion will help with strength.
How long before the bottom boards blow out do to weight of the dirt
Why did you find picket boards in such great shape?
Menards usually has a fairly good selection. The trick is to wait until they restock for the spring…
how many pickets are needed for 1 bed?
New subscriber here! Thanks for this tutorial! 👍🏻 I'd love to try and tackle it myself! To buy one is so expensive...as with EVERYTHING nowadays. 🙄😮💨 Plus, if all goes well, I could make and sell them! I'd LOVE to see how they look after you've torched them! I bet they're incredible!! Thanks again for sharing this!! 🫶🏻
Do you rub it/wash it off afterwards, and does it really work against insects and rodents? Thank you in advance.
I leave it as is, I’ve got one going on 3 years with no problems
Materials / Build List; He lists everything gradually throughout the video, so grab your pencil and paper and enjoy. If you have to re-watch; more views are the best way to repay his kindness anyways. There are lots of great details in there from someone experienced in making. I know from a little experience myself that every little thing he tells us in the video has importance. I think the only things he doesn't mention is that the screws are torx head (not vital, but great for speed and not stripping like phillips but if you have exterior phillips, by all means...) and exterior grade (vital). I wouldn't overspend on the screws. Get a cardboard box like the one you see him use; you can buy expensive ones in plastic containers that may be worth it if you are building a something like a deck, but they'd almost certainly outlast this box since it's not safe to seal like a deck. I put food-safe oil on the outside of my cedar box just to slow down the graying. It will rot from the inside out eventually.
I don't waste my time on videos that don't have a cut list and a materials list and plans. There are too many videos out there, and I don't want to waste my time.
@@MCLBC This is the best one I’ve seen. It’s by far the lowest amount of money spent for the largest amount of plantable area. Have you found a better one? He doesn’t owe you a thing; a video let alone a cut list. You sound entitled. Maybe you should appreciate the work he put into this video that cost you nothing.
@Refiner Similitude I appreciate the many who post cut and material lists. If you're going to post a "How to," then make it one. 🤡
@@MCLBC So, I was right then.
@@RefinerSimilitude Not only are you wrong, you're butthurt and triggered! Meanwhile, I'm in the middle of my first planter build from another video that had a cut and material list! 💪
What screws are you using? I'm having a hard time finding 1" exterior screws outside of Lowe's.
Try Menards, that’s where I typically buy mine.
So it’s 4 16oz mineral oil and 1 16oz bag of bees wax white or yellow organic?
🥰🥰🥰
Very nice design
Try using your hand to spread and buff the oil. You use far less and it’s easier when you can feel how much the board is absorbing. I do this with board butter also.
Thanks for the advice
How well do the fence pickets stand up as legs?
I have a 2x3 version in my backyard, two years no problems. I wouldn’t recommend dragging them around though…
@@madrosewoodworks631 Thank you.
I’ve got everything I need to start this, except the one and a quarter inch screws…back to the store. Thank you so much for a great video instructions. I I did not hear what you used for the rails that hold the side to side bottom pieces of the planter; what did you use for those rails? Did you rip more fence pickets for the rails? Thank you for your answer.😊
I just ripped a picket into 3 equal strips
Excellent video, thank you!
I understand the bed is 6 foot long.... How wide is it ?
2 feet wide
I had a bad experience with this stuff
Explain
@dennisgarber It has a very mucous-like consistency, and it can kind of gob-up if your not careful. I wouldn't use it on anything with details, textures, or tight contours for fear that it might gum up crevaces and harden in them.
im going to go buy wood tomorrow but im uncertain to what boards to buy for this, can you give me a list of the boards size to buy.. thank you
Perfect planks don’t exist sixty years of experience told me that, wet , dry expansion treated non treated all places a roll in building
Im a grower look at the pots your plants are coming from their probably root bound already so make sure your building a box a little larger than pot your plants are already in? If you’re plant in 10or12 inch pot build something double the pots size or larger
Why torch it if its made from cedar? Just for looks?... Nice job by the way. Thanks
Mostly looks, as I don’t thoroughly char the surface as in true Shou Sugi Ban techniques.
I keep a spray bottle in hand. LMFAO 😂 🤣
I like it
thanks for the info!
