Wow, $200 each is a lot. Yours should hold up well. For comparison, I build 8 out of Redwood 14 yrs ago and I have 3 starting to degrade. I live in Oregon so Redwood seemed to be a good choice of wood. People reading this should know that the ground could present a problem with root invasion and the likes of Gophers and Moles. A combo of Ground fabric and 1/2 wire fabric worked marginally for roots but 100% for ground critters. Root invasion, even if the canopy doesn't come close is still a problem and could make it difficult to keep plants hydrated. Well Done!
Question…. Are lumber prices as insane in CA as they are down here?!
I know part of the issue was due to everything closing down, but this is getting ridiculous.
Sigh
Just wanted to say thanks for posting this video, certainly going to help me try this out. I look forward to more videos from your channel. We appreciate your effort and for sharing this information. GOD BLESS
This is my favorite how to channel. You take your time to explain why and how to do things rather than just rushing through. I can’t begin to tell you how many times does channel has helped me throughout the years Thank you sir.
I like how you go fast on the redundant stuff, it makes it for a fuller, more to the point video!!
Glad it helped!
You are my go to for project instruction. Thanks for your work.
Where was this 6 months ago when I built some garden beds! I'll definitely be using this plan next spring. Thank you from BC!
Great idea on the threaded rod for support!
So many fast tricks that i have learned to save time building and framing.
I've seen a lot of people build these race beds. I love the way you do yours because I like barn ten.
Excellent explanation for an inexperienced builder. Thank you!
Thank you for such for such a beautiful design and instruction on bulding these metal roofing beds, I have watched many vedios on different ways and designs and I must say yours is the best. I will be building some for spring. Keep up the good work and be blessed.
Excellent. Easy to follow. I like the height and open bottom for a good amount of material.
Glad you like it!
Great job, loving all your videos you do a great job in explaining so glad I found you.👍 I am redoing my backyard, deck and building planter boxes in between the steps and got lots of information from you on both projects. Thank you so much.
Welcome aboard!
These are so easy and fun to make. I did one last weekend but I burned the wood (Yakisugi technique) to get a good seal on it.
Great job. Thank you for your time and expertise!!
I love this. These are the kind of raised beds I want for the house we are buying so I am happy you made this video!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you Shannon.
Shannon, you do great work and I admire your honesty. You’re the best!
Thank you so much 🤗
Just talking with the wife while purchasing some vegetable plants that I need to build some raised planters so this is right on time
Perfect!
I like that style, great idea. Thanks
I love watching your videos!!!!!!👍🏻
thanks ! love it ! probably start mine this W-End
Thanks for this Shannon!
You bet!
Pre-drilling is such a non-hassle now that I've got a drill and an impactor! I would say an these two tools are so necessary now.
awesome work thanks for the help you do a great job
Nice project - and somewhat easy to do with basic tools.
It sure is!
Really enjoyed that mate.....well presented
Hi Shannon. Great work as usual. Looks like my dad was right about workshop table size. "When you think it's wide/long enough, make it a foot wider/longer". I'm always struggling with the same issue. Workspace always seems tight.
awesome thanks for the cut list :)
Why buy if you can do it yourself. Outstanding & thanks for the video.
Your the man u rock the world
God bless you
Like this, nice a clean, and csn be from reusable materials!👍
Nice job 👍
Nice Job.
Love your videos!
Thank you!
Hey Shannon great video as always
Thank you so much 🤗
A great instruction set describing a raised garden bed. If I might add one other suggestion: if planning to install an all-thread bar to brace the middle of the bed from bowing out, I would use a piece of PVC pipe to cover or encase the all-thread bar to prevent rusting and eventual failure of the bar over time. Thanks for sharing this video.
May help but a 3/8"or 1/2" bar would last for years anyways
This guy is a all around builder, handyman. Used his videos for lots of info..thank you shannon. 🤙
You bet!
Thanks.
pro quality, pro tips, pro result !!
🙌
Good to see you again Shannon.
I did this today and followed directions exactly! Right down to the #10 screws!
My wife of so happy she's cooking again!
Thank you for the steak and salmon dinner!
I have built 4 of these now.
Great vid Shannon. This is just what my wife wants after I finish siding the house(by following your siding videos :) ) However until the Big Box stores stop hoarding all the lumber and raising the prices 4x under false pretences that there is a shortage.. this project will have to wait
Said to say it's the mills causing the higher prices and shortages. Greedy bastards..
@@j.cooper2246 Very true ... it has nothing to do with the big box stores
I guess if a person wanted to use a little extra material they could make that middle frame support into 2 middle frame supports and place them over the lapped edges on each sheet.
Great video 👍
for sure you could.
Those are nice
I am interested in building one or more of these. I think I will try 2x3's to save some money with the crazy price of wood right now, except for the top seat portion I would use the wider 2x4"s. But I have not found the metal sheets yet in a quick search of lowes or homedepot. Maybe when the stores re-open I can find them in an Aisle.
I assumed you used non PT to keep cost down and also not poison what you might be growing.
vv thank you sir
Merci
At 27:32 use 3/4" PVC for 1 or 2 center spread supports. Make or buy a Trunnion. Use a round piece of 1/2" Aluminium rod, file a small flat to drill thru- drill and Tap 10-24. Drill thru PVC and insert trunion. Then drill the 2x4 and use a 10-24 SS Bolt and washer into the trunion. You will get NO rot or rust. You can just use the alum with no thread and use a threaded hook around the trunion..
Oh good luck painting galvanized
But looks awesome
Great, easy to follow tutorial with minimal scrap. Would like to see an inventory list prior to starting for us novice do it yourself folks. Great job!
We forgot to add the list in the description, check back there later.
i would have added glue, but either way screw in frame with or without glue ../ good upload// God Bless
I forgot great job
hi thanks for your video I wanted to build this raised bed however I only have 4x4 wood and wanted to ask what screws do you recommend for building a frame with 4x4 wood best wishes ken
Thanks again Shannon. Great stuff. Currently putting board and batton on my cabin. What is your recommended mailing pattern for 8 inch wide boards. I see so much conflicting advice!! I’m using 8 in wide by 3/4 thick cedar boards with 4 in batons. Thanks
Personally I would nail the boards in the centre and the battons on each edge. We can help you more in the forum if you need more advice.
Hi! I love this design! When I mentioned to a friend of mine that I am going to build these in my garden, she said the tin can actually cause the roots to get overheated. Have you had that experience or heard of anyone having that problem? I live in Southern California. Thank you!
I honestly have never heard of that but I suppose in some climates maybe it could?
Shannon! Long time subscriber, LOVE the channel! Your videos have helped me so much. I had a question about flush beam decks and joist span. I don't know if the same allowable spans apply for flush beam vs drop beam. I'm building a 12x16 ground level deck, the beams will be 2x8, will I be able to use 2x6's for the joists? They would run approx 6' each before being fastened to each beam.
Thanks for watching! If your question is wether 2x6s joist can span 6' between support, the answer is yes. If you need more help please post questions in our forum and I can help from there.www.house-improvements.com/forums/
@@HouseImprovements thank you sir!
shannon , buddy thank you the video and time, as always great material.
if I gonna place outside in the back yard and double on long,
under no cover , Do you think will be ok o I should considering something else for the long time,
thank you in advance
I think you are asking if you can build it twice as long? Yes you could but you will need some braces inside to keep it from spreading from the weight of the soil you place in it.
@@HouseImprovements and the 2x4 with the rain ans sun in florida ,
should I paint it or used the green 2x4 , thank you again
Great videos I have a question we ordered 6’’ to windows for front of the house but we found out the framing is 2x4 we want to do vinyl siding how we can address that problem?thanks
The window jambs can be removed and cut narrower usually and then re installed.
LoL @ the gag reel 🤣🤣
Ya filming by myself produces some out takes!
Great video that edits out unnecessary stuff. If you don't use PT wood, which you will do if you plan to grow vegetables, how do you make sure the wood does not start rotting out in the weather? Thanks
You can stain it or paint it. The only part that may rot out pre maturely is the bottom of the 2x sitting directly on the ground. You could raise it off the ground if you like sitting on 3 PT 2x4s.
OMG Absolutely so Beautiful Sweetie
looks nice! Just curious, why did you cut the metal for sides into three pieces instead of just using one long piece?
Less waste. The panels are wider than the total height of my planters. typical panels are 30" - 36" widest I did not want to waste money by cutting them to the width I needed and throw away the rest.
Love the video! I think theres a mistake on your cutsheet. The metal sheeting should be 8' W x 25 1/2" H. I noticed when i was looking at the costs of the sheet.
The sheets are purchased 8' long and I believe they where 32" wide I then cut them not pieces to fit them side by side
@@HouseImprovements Having trouble finding any corrugated metal sheets that are 32 or 33 1/2" wide. The standard width at HD and Lowes are 25 1/2. Where did you get your sheets of corrugated metal? You mention that you may have to special order them, but I can't even find that width on the internet.
Okay, what new tool did you buy to have to make these for Mrs HouseImprovements? TWO, in fact! Neat project, thank you :)
None
@@HouseImprovements Figured it was at least a compressor, you da man! :)
👍
How do you get 25" from 2 ea 2x4s and a 18" vertical braces ? Should the vertical braces be 22 inches?
3.5 + 3.5+ 18= 25"
What do you think about using 5mm thick polypropylene sheets instead of galvanized steel sheets?
How you hold the soil?
👍💯
I would use pocket holes, maybe.
Is there a reason that you cut the steel sheets to go vertical instead of just having it long and go horizontal? Would seem quicker to just use the sheets lengthwise.
Less waste. Theses sheets where 30+ inches wide
What's to stop the bottom of the wooden frame from rotting out over time?
Nothing really , you could use PT lumber if you want but some people dont want that in their vegetable garden. Standard lumber stained will last likely 10-15 years before its a huge problem.
How long are those long screws?
Would love to know where to buy the metal sheeting
Some big box lumber stores and smaller lumber stores will have some in stock in their roofing section, it may not be exactly like mine but similar . There are PVC styles like what I have but I dont think it would be strong enough once filled with dirt.
www.homedepot.ca/en/home/categories/building-materials/roofing-and-gutters/roofing/roof-panels/f/steel/698-w7e
Curious. Why did you choose to cut the metal with ribs in that direction as opposed to cutting long pieces? Seems like there would be less cutting the ribs so the sides sit horizontally
Less waste doing this . The sheets are 32" wide so you would be cutting off some of every sheet and tossing it.
Ahhh. Makes sense
We need more blooper reel...
I apologize if this is a dumb question, but will the metal sheeting rust over time? I've been thinking of making something like this given the cost of pressure treated (sweet mercy).
It will not rust, it's galvanized.👍
Rusting will take many years , rusting right through may take 20 yrs.
The wood will rot out before the metal rusts out.
Great video! Looking forward to the day when we no longer hear 'the pandemic did it'. And, it switches to the culprits who did it!
How to prevent them from rusting?
Galvalume finish will not rust out for a long time even in contact with wet soil.
What type and length are those screws.? Thanks
watch at the 3:50 mark
Love all your videos. Really liked this project. Need to put on my husbands honey to do list.😊
You should!
What is the gauge of that roofing metal?
I can't remember , 22 maybe?
Could this work elevated on 4x4 legs?
I do not see why not
Can anyone give me advice on how much to charge to make two of these?$ My older neighbor wants me to make them for her. She is supplying all the materials.
if you're doing a good job and being efficient... it shouldn't take more than 2-3 hours (highest rate) 3-5 hours (mid hourly rate) to cut and assemble. maybe 5-7 depending on skill set (lower hourly rate)
the materials PER unit roughly $125 materials or $250 for 2
carpenters and craftsman charge $75/hr+ (~ $250+ don't sell a skill set short)
handy bros $50-65 (~$225+)
"can do it" side work $30-45 ($200+)
give or take rough guesstimates .. per my locale
don't sell yourself short, it degrades the market for others... good work ain't cheap and cheap work ain't good
don't be the guy that rips off the customer either.
if you always intend to add value and you weigh the added value with the current market for whatever currency you have agreed to barter your value for...
your intuition will guide you..
if you get done.. and feel better saying $100 good for you...
or maybe the altruistic side says....
share some peppers and strawberries and I'm glad to be of service...
or maybe you finish up and feel compelled to wish the neighbor well free of any compensation
EVERYTHING happens for a reason... your thoughts feelings and belief system will dictate the up and coming nuances of the experience as life.
the kind hearted good nature of a deed for another can come back 100x fold in the most "unconnected" ways...
how do you FEEL??? allow that intuition to guide you
more work, turning the panels vertically, 8ft horizontal...done
Won’t the metal liner rust?
This metal will take years to form rust let along rust through.
How do you square if it is not? ( 35:00)
You can squeeze the diagonal length that is longer . If your top frame is sticking over all sides a bit like mine it likely won't matter if your'e out a little anyways.
What would you charge someone to build them
That all depends on your market but around here you would get likely at least $400 a piece for these including materials.
I don't see the cut list in the description or anywhere else.
Working on that , we forgot to add it. Please check back later in the description.
@@HouseImprovements Thank You, I'll keep a lookout for it. Garden Boxes are on my to do list for this summer
The cut list is here: www.house-improvements.com/files/raised-garden-bed.pdf
Are those prices CAD or USD?
CAD $
Are you Les Strouds brother?
nope!
Hmm simple 8 ft two by fours lol Those simple 2x are now 10 bucks each !!!
Now get some potting soil and a Farmer's Almanac.
If you don't cut the corrugations against their bend face, and let them run lengthwise, they will lie better, and be more sound.
For the height of these planters I would have been wasting basically 12" of metal all the way around if I ran it horizontally , so this makes more sense to me to me in this case.
Oh no you didn't. I was just thinking about building one of these. 😁👍
Now you can see if my idea might fit what you want!
@@HouseImprovements Yes sir.

No. More Shannon is better.
