Oh good question. I have to run now but will watch the video later and will be curious what you have to say. What does the EXP offer for someone just coming into the Evercade universe that would justify the extra cost (what is it 60 to 80 bucks?)? I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
I do wonder how many people are drawn into the Evercade world by the Super Pocket brand compared to how many are choosing between Super Pocket(s) and EXP, or even ignoring the EXP with an SP/VS combo. Having no experience with the SP, I'd imagine as most games are 4:3 or there abouts (especially Gameboy/Lynx), most Evercade cartridge games would play well on the SPs. Certain games with smaller sprites or awkward ratios (particularly 16:9 or tate) to the SP would be difficult to enjoy via the small screen and letterboxing. Taito and some Capcom exclusives are a major selling point, plus the Namco carts work too. The pocket size gives Gameboy vibes - ideal for public transport. Cathedral won't work on the SPs without the upcoming update via the EXP/VS download (then would you want to play a letterboxed game with compact shoulder buttons via the SP anyway?). Again, no experience with the EXP, the screen ratio is suitable for all cartridges, plus HDMI out as well as tate mode. It's more small bag sized rather than pocket sized, but does provide a more comfortable experience than the SPs - best to play when the soap operas are on. Some Capcom exclusives and Namco compatibility are pros also, along with secrets and unlockables. No Taito unfortunately. The VS (my choice) isn't playable on the move; it is designed for decent gaming sessions. It is a compact home console, so could be used in hotels, B&Bs, campervans with electric hookup, etc via a TV (maybe even a Raspberry Pi style HDMI screen, running the screen, speakers and VS via power banks if you're that desperate...). You can play up to 4 players and experiment with USB controllers (unlike the SP/EXP). It's low wattage, so electricity bills are minimised and no tripping campsite power supplies. Like the EXP, you can unlock secrets and hidden games. Tate is now supported - no need for an extremely large TV to compensate the letterboxing. There are also dual cartridge games to discover. Sadly though, no Namco, Capcom or Taito.
It's a pretty thorough comparison of the 3 systems. For me the VS being incapable with the Namco carts was a major, major bummer. I'm also bummed at all the Capcom games which are made for multiplayer and are only available on the EXP instead of the console that would allow for 4 players (or even 2 players). The Taito games are a big selling point for me on the Superpocket. The Capcom games have been made available in a bunch of different places (except of course on the VS) and the Taito are a bit harder to find (legally anyway).
Self correction: MERCS and Wolf Of The Battlefield: MERCS are one and the same (maybe different versions?). There are no Capcom "exclusive" (Blaze wise) on the SPs.
Agreed @@francescosmith7859. A lot of the Namcos can also be played elsewhere. However there are some gems like Battle Cars I haven't seen anywhere else.
That's a good comparison with pros and cons between the different options. Thanks! If I wasn't already most interested in the VS, I think I would go with the EXP because I would want the larger number of Capcom games on it versus the Super Pocket. Also, if I am going to have shoulder buttons, I want them to be reasonably usable. I would hope that the battery life issue you have has been ironed out by now, and I can play Taito games on Taito Legends on PS2. However, I am impressed how much people like the Super Pockets. The screens do indeed look great, and for 4:3 aspect games, the screen isn't really that much smaller than the EXP at all. Oh, and one other thing I am hearing about the pockets is that they sound really good, which is a nice plus too. Blaze did a great job on what to cut for the new pocket systems and I hope a lot of people buy them in the holiday season so they can earn that many more thousands of new buyers for Evercade carts. The higher their user base is, the better chance they have with getting new licenses from game companies.
Quick answer: Do you want to pay double for a better screen and better controls? Get the EXP. Want to pay half to play your USB-based cartridges and only play on playing 4:3 content? Get the cute one with Taito games built in for half the cost :D
Personally I love the Super Pocket and it is my entry into Evercade Carts. I'm not a fan of any of the Evercade hardware, I don't like the looks, feel and even the branding to be quite honest. I really like what they are doing though. It's really great to have Carts in these modern times, even if they are just re-writable memory which people are winging about. If you think about it, you can re-flash a Game Boy Cartridge as well. It means they can patch broken games which is great! Cheers for the video mate 👊
I can respect that. I’m loving the super pockets as well. I also enjoy most other Evercade hardware as well…although, it’s definitely not for everyone, and that’s understandable. I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that there are quite a few really bad games they put on some of the carts. But at $20 a cart (which most have numerous games on), it doesn’t necessarily break the deal for me lol. Glad you’re enjoying the Super pocket👍 Which one did you end up getting? Thanks for watching! Greatly appreciated!!!🕹️👾🕹️
Cheers mate, I got the Taito edition because I am burnt out on Capcom games and wanted to play stuff I hadn't played growing up. I picked up Full Void and the Delphine collection with it. Very happy. Looking forward to seeing what Carts are coming out in 2024.
The exp does have some extra functionality that some people might prefer. But I agree on the battery part.. the first evercade to me still has better battery life and comfort overal
Good video and discussion. I hadn't heard about the battery on the Superpockets and that's a big plus to get 4+ hours (especially considering the EXP barely gets 3). Do you have any thougths on the button quality? I know you mentioned the triggers (and that's definitely a bit weird on the Superpocket but thankfully I'll barely use them). Any thoughts on the EASY mode? Also, is there a way to plug the Superpocket into your television? Or is that just an option for the EXP? In general this feels a bit weird and like Evercade is competing against itself. It felt like they were pushing their customers to the EXP (which is understandable) but now it feels like they've made their cheaper option more appealing in a variety of ways. Sorry for all the questions and I hope you and the family enjoy Thanksgiving.
The buttons and D pads are on point and both feel great! Unfortunately, there is no way to hook these to a tv, they are exclusively handhelds only. I haven’t even tried the easy mode yet to be honest. I get bored with games if they’re too easy lol. I’ve been using these super pockets for all of my evercade carts except for Cathedral and Alwa’s Awakening. For that cart, I’m using my EXP. But 99.9% of the time, I have 2 arcade carts in my VS (which powers one of my arcade cabinets) at all times.👍
Thank you for weighing the pros and cons on these! I do believe that the EXP is worth the extra money for the better controls layout in those those niche situations. I can foresee an inspired person out there somewhere creating a 3D printed button solution for the cheaper handhelds that make it more comfortable. Anyway, great review! Game On!
Great video. With Earthworm Jim, Boogerman and Splatterhouse being my primary games, I think the Capcom Super Pocket is the way to go. Portability and battery life are big factors for me.
Thanks man! Yeah, the Capcom is awesome! And those 3 games are great! Earthworm Jim is just classic, Boogerman is highly underrated, and SplatterHouse is one of my all time favorites!👍
Unfortunately no Tate mode, but they (flying shooters) still play well if you put it in full screen. They don’t look stretched on the super pockets screen.
Depends on how you like your buttons mapped. Rather than using select to change magic, I prefer using a trigger button. It makes it MUCH easier while fighting bosses. Unfortunately, the trigger buttons on the Super Pockets have an awful design, not to mention you can’t remap. It’s a preference thing. I love the Super Pockets, but I’ll stick to playing that game on the VS or EXP👍 Hitting that select during boss fights to switch magic is a pain (which is why I remap the buttons). It’s even worse on the SP’s, considering the select button is under the Dpad🤷🏻♂️
M.a.m.e. for Droid free and you can hook up a xbox PS3 PS4 anything that could Bluetooth to your phone you could get an HDMI to hook your phone up to your TV to make a big screen I believe there's some games that support up to six players so yeah I am a big fan of all these new retro devices and emulator devices but a more viable option is to use your phone or PC is even better
