What is the best material for FPV drone ducts? | Material Testing [Part 1]

  • Man, this was one hectic video to film XD.
    During my hachidorii V2 testing, I realized that 3D printed ducts were much more viable than I gave them credit for - It even came to a point that I genuinely was curious how far we can go with them and how well they'd perform as 75/65 ducts. I wanted to find out which material was the best. Naturally, I thought to myself that ducts should give some degree of protection to the motors and propellers for our whoops - so this video goes over some tests related to the material's stiffness and weight.
    For our samples, we tested PLA, ABS, PETG, HP PA-12, PC, ASA, and the Mobula 7 V2 and V4 ducts in three criterias: Weight, Axial Bending [Squish], and Tangential Bending [Flippy-Floppy]. Yes, I gave those tests those names XD. These three tests will help up guess how these ducts will perform when load is applied to them - similar to how they'll react during crashes.
    Random thought but I might redo the Squishiness test - this time using calipers. The values I got were all very close to each other given that I was only using a ruler. Well see in part two but this should suffice.
    In part two, we will intentionally crash my hachidorii V2 build using the different samples to verify if the data we got from this first part is correct and to identify other important information like durability and type of damage we can expect from each material.
    *DISCLAIMER*: Filaments come in many different variants and will have different characteristics depending on the additives blended in. These are just the results I got from the samples I have and your results may vary.
    Thank you again to ‪@PCBWay‬ for helping me manufacture these ducts! I've tried their 3D printing, CNC, and metal printing - and I genuinely am excited to get to work with them. This video would've just been "PETG vs PLA" without them XD. If you guys need something made, perhaps for a personal project, I highly recommend them!

    Awesome work, great data!! Thank you. You made me wonder about hybrid printing ABS and PLA. Have you thought of experimenting with this? It's mostly not recommended because of the big difference in temperatures, etc. but sheesh, it would be great to see if a mostly ABS print with strands of PLA embedded near the outer layers of the print performs well.

    One thing I couldn't help but think was what if stiffness wasn't the most important thing. So the question would be what is the minimum stiffness that still applies protection while being the lightest weight.

    • @im_ricebowl
      @im_ricebowl  5 місяців тому

      Bingo! that is why I mentioned PLA was the unofficial winner cause in reality, it should really be a balance of weight, flex, and stiffness. Though your suggestion is a little hard to quantify, part 2 should be able to shed some light on the necessary minimum stiffness. Really nice insight which I'll take note off. Thanks man!

    • @aulma_fpv
      @aulma_fpv 5 місяців тому

      @@im_ricebowl I was thinking the same. From my experience, the Meteor 75 (non-pro) frame protects props better than the Mobula7 v4. The Meteor 75 is a biiit more flexible, while the Mobula7 v4 tends to bend during hard crashes and sometimes stays deformed, causing the 40mm props to scrub against the duct edges. We need big coorporate testing like the Samsung Fold's being folded 100000 times 😁Looking forward to part2

    • @im_ricebowl
      @im_ricebowl  5 місяців тому +1

      @@aulma_fpv interesting. I believe in my class that was called "Plastic Deformation" where there's a certain load where a material will remain springy and return back to its original form. And after a certain point, it doesn't return to its shape. That could be smth I include in part 2. Thanks for the insight! I'll ponder about that XD

    It would be really cool to make a quick release for the ducts so you can print 20 and just snap em off and snap a new one back on when they break

    • @im_ricebowl
      @im_ricebowl  5 місяців тому +1

      I was actually thinking of something like that just recently but still got no solid idea how to do the latching mechanism without adding too much weight. My last idea was similar to those 3d printed buckles but instead of 2 prongs it's 4. Great idea tho! smth to think about for the future XD.

    • @im_ricebowl
      @im_ricebowl  5 місяців тому

      @@Shauny_D I get the crab style pinch, that could be a good design choice. Thinking of having slots on the duct for the flexing parts to lock in. That way, it's also at the optimal height regardless of the FC stack size.
      will get back to you about that actually, maybe smth for V3

    • @Shauny_D
      @Shauny_D 5 місяців тому

      @@im_ricebowl yes! That'd be a great feature. I could see myself bringing 3or4 ducts with me for breaks but then also popping them off if I'm outside and wanting that tactless freedom.

    • @im_ricebowl
      @im_ricebowl  5 місяців тому +1

      @@Shauny_Dthat would actually be really convinient too for repairs. No need to transfer a whole drone to a diff frame if the CF fra.e. the age of whoops with removable ducts is close. I can feel it 🤣 Really cool concept tho I'll defenitely be tinkering around that idea for the next weeks. I'll let make some updates when I make progress on it 😉

  • @eyeflytinkerings

    Nice, thanks for sharing! Maybe LW-PLA might be interesting to test. It foams up during printing and has only around 50% the weight of normal PLA. It's made for printing planes and such. It's less strong, but might work for this type of round thin object.
