I understand that babes were left unattended outside shops and homes in the past. The presents talked about, CD player and computers, seem far too late in time to still do this. In the US babies were also placed in cages outside which were at attached to a window sill in order to get some fresh air. I think that was the 40’s and 50’s. Can’t even imagine it now. Thinking about how precious it was to hold my baby. Yesterday was her birthday ... she woul been 35. Now she’s forever 32. Much love to all esp those whose babies arrive in heaven. 💕🐝🇺🇸🎃

He is my precious gift, as your daughter is to you! I grew up as a very young child in Montclair, New Jersey, USA, in the early to mid 1950s. My mother and I walked everywhere in our small city, enjoying the residential areas with their magnificently beautiful and sweet smelling old fashioned bushes. We walked to the busy main thoroughfare as well, later with my baby sister in her carriage. My mother always, but always, took her from her carriage and held her in one arm and grasped my hand with her other hand when shopping inside a store! When, in my innocence, I asked my mother why we didn't leave my baby sister outside as most other mothers did, she wisely replied it was not safe to leave a child outside on the sidewalk alone...dangerous events could happen! And they did, certainly in those old days as well as now. As I grew older, I realized the sagacity of my mother's words! And then I could never understand how a caring, thinking mother could take such a great chance! I wish you a continued peaceful life despite your hardship. If I may say this to you, I think that your daughter dwells with the Angels and with Our Good Lord in Heaven now, no worries, no illness, and no pain any longer! 🕊💜🕊

In the 1970's my mother would line our carriage up in the row with many others outside our town's department store. Mothers coming in would signal to you if such and such a carriage was crying. They all pitched in and helped. Nobody ever questioned the safety of leaving us all outside in the fresh air. Unthinkable that anybody in our town would even imagine harming a hair on our heads. I do not know when this changed. I am sorry to hear your lost your child, to be predeceased by your own must be a cruel grief to a parent. I wish you well.
Dear Amazing Grace, I suffered with my parents the loss of my baby sister and only brother - five years apart in their 40's. My heart still breaks for them as it does for your loss. Their is no loss greater than the loss of a child - it changes your life forever. Now my parents have gone and I believe they are with their beloved children. Most people say that time heals but my experience thirty plus years later is that it does not. You have my profound sympathy and prayer that you are able to find some solace knowing that your daughter is with you forever in your heart and in spirit.
I am 70, when I was young we mothers would let our babies sleep outside in the sunshine on the front lawn, in their buggies. no one ever stole our babies. we would leave the stroller outside the store as we went inside. i know i know, we just didnt know any better, but it seemed safe back then, now a days no way.

In the part of Europe where I live, it's still possible. I see many mothers park their babies right outside a shop and even a café! As far as I know, there've been no reports of stolen babies, but I always feel a bit anxious when I see an unattended baby in a pram or pushchair.
It was safe back then. I was born in 1943 - my mother would leave me outside the house on the front lawn with my small dog while she cleaned. She never had a thought of anything bad happening and nothing ever did. Sadly today that is no longer so...
ymimad49, it is no safe less now than then. The rate of child abductions has remained relatively constant. In fact, in the U.S., at least, the crime rate is nearly at an all time low. What has changed is the public perception of the phenomenon of child abduction due to far greater media coverage of the few child abductions that do occur plus television and movies dramatizing child abductions.

I was born in 59 also. My 2 brothers and sister and I walked almost a mile to town in Montana snow for school. Mother always had great breakfast for us and we were always so happy warm, fit,and ready for the whole day by the time we made it to school. miss that!

Here in Perth there is a precise date when people stopped sleeping out on verandahs in summer - summer of 1961, when Eric Edgar Cooke began killing people in their homes (he had previously killed by running people down with his car)

I'm in my early 60 now but we lived in wexford and mam would leave us outside the shop while she did the shopping as little shops didn't have room for the big prams then with 9 children in family I'd say there were days she said would someone take a few 🙃 😅 it was a different world then the older ones looked after the younger ones ,went swimming in the local river there were children as young as 3/4 and we all got home safe maybe we were just the lucky ones but I miss them days life was so different xx
I guess it is:.. people produced more babies that they could handle that nobody was interested in other peoples' children and the sex weirows were not so much in evidence. My daughter took a bus trip to her g-mother ALONE when she was 5yo. I had another baby and she just wanted to have some peace and quiet with g-ma. so I took her to the buss stop and she would go, pass through some intersections in the centre of the town, get there safely, she always diverted her route by a kiosk with stationary supplies to buy a pencil. Ahhh those were the days my friend 🥰

Reading all the comments showing surprise that anyone would leave their baby outside a shop. It was certainly a very commonplace practice in Britain back in the 70's and earlier. While kidnapping was a rarity, it did have its perils. My friend's baby sister had all her clothes and blankets stolen when she was left outside in winter, her mum returning to find her blue with cold. I was left outside a shop when the brake failed on my pram and it rolled into the road (no, no Mr Bean/Frank Spencer type scenarios ensued). It only rolled a little way down the road, and when my mum came out of the shop she said all the cars were carefully driving around my pram - no, not one soul thought to wheel me back onto the pavement!

The unassuming police procedural is a British tradition. They are not supposed to be harrowing or epic: they are meant to be moral puzzles; intellectual games with a crime twist. These new ones all wallow in the lurid hideousness of the crime, or the personality of the detective,, and forget that working out the circumstances is the whole point.
Depressing subject. These Ruth Rendell mysteries are very very good. Much better than our American ones. This one goes into a deep dark corner of crazy people and mis-treatment of children.

My dad took me nd my baby brother out shopping, we left him out side, dad forgot him, and panicked 30mins later when he remembered. The boy was still sitting in his pram outside the first shop! That was a v looooong time ago!

I believe 48 episodes were made between 1987 and 2000. Very nice that you have shared half. Have you ever come across the rest? As you said, maybe there will be a complete box set one day.

Countries differ. So do times. Where crime is not dealt with - enough police - and morality wanes, and families can't live on one salary due heavy taxation, crimes go up.

There is this flavour that is unmistakably , I say English. because Scottish , Welsh , Irish is a little different . BUT for most of us who now live elsewhere that distinctive smell is forever imprinted & so missed . So interesting to see a very young Jane Horrocks here....finding these gems is what makes me persevere through some pretty bad old TV series. I’m not necessarily referring to this one, even I do skip several minutes at a time through some episodes. After all, “Inspector Morse,” it isn’t.
Having watched another episode last night, I said the same thing to my husband today. It's surprising how dated it all looks, isn't it? It feels like only yesterday, but looks like another century. And I agree with another viewer, it doesn't all feel like progress. But that is a sign of our age! Every generation feels the same.
@Andy Peek It depends where you lived then; they had martial law and a terrible economic crisis in Poland in the 1980s, and what about the war in Yugoslavia in the 1990s, for example. The real s..-hole in the 20th century was during the Great Depression, Fascism, the Stalinist era in the east and the two WWs. Nothing compares to that, Sir.
I agree..every generation fears for the next. People in my generation had things the way we wanted them...the coming generation will have things the way they like. For me, the only thing about being old is that I won’t live to see it!

I am also dropping you a line because -- I bet you know this, if so sorry, *and* sorry for being infuriating! -- there is another ep called 'Simisola', and one called 'Road Rage'. The former has to do with perceptions of race in the town: I seem to recall that a doctor treating Wexford is Black, and his family is involved in a mystery. The latter is about plans to route a road through the locality. As I say, you probably either are aware, or they are on the site somewhere, LOL. In which case. more fool I! Anyway, I think they are later episodes, about early/mid '90s Take care! :-)

Here, in central Europe, we used to leave babies in prams outside shops too. Nowadays people do not do it because, I suppose, it is not permitted by the law. I doubt the streets were much safer 30 years ago, though. I used to see quite a number of flashers on my way to school who I was not afraid of because they never, well, physically bothered anyone. Today this kind of pervert behaviour in public is fraught with danger, I think ;-) I believe we should not demonise today's society.
pertelote 45, you are absolutely correct. Child abduction is no more common now than ever, and it has always been extraordinarily rare. In fact, society is far less violent today than it was when this was produced, and especially in the prior decades.
@@inkyguy I remember several truly violent and run-down no-go areas in my city in the 1980s; today they are full of tourists, cafes, restaurants and I would not be afraid to walk those streets at night. One needs to be street-wise, that's all. Cheers :-)

Yes, my mother left us all outside in a prom. But that was in Dublin quite some time ago and everyone had a lot of babies so no point stealing one!
In 60s and 70s mums used to let babies in front of shops over here too. Our eldest one was stolen from in front of a shop by some disturbed lady.

Depressing subject. These Ruth Rendell mysteries are very very good. Much better than our American ones. This one goes into a deep dark corner of crazy people and mis-treatment of children.
I much prefer these to the books.

Thank you so much. I love of Ruth Rendell's books. I was 14 in 1988 and was not at all interested in the TV series, but now at 47, I am really enjoying them. I believe 48 episodes were made between 1987 and 2000. Very nice that you have shared half. Have you ever come across the rest? As you said, maybe there will be a complete box set one day.

Countries differ. So do times. Where crime is not dealt with - enough police - and morality wanes, and families can't live on one salary due heavy taxation, crimes go up.
@@bluegent7 , You seem to come from a country where policing is a positive thing. In my country it is not necessarily so. One-salary families are also rather scarce. Morality is an altogether more difficult question, isn't it?

There is this flavour that is unmistakably , I say English. because Scottish , Welsh , Irish is a little different . BUT for most of us who now live elsewhere that distinctive smell is forever imprinted & so missed . It is embuded into each tiny aspect. , so intrinsic belonging no where else AND. others can. try forever but are unable to reproduce . Thank you for these gifts of Home .....a-jh

Having watched another episode last night, I said the same thing to my husband today. It's surprising how dated it all looks, isn't it? It feels like only yesterday, but looks like another century. And I agree with another viewer, it doesn't all feel like progress. But that is a sign of our age! Every generation feels the same.
@Andy Peek It depends where you lived then; they had martial law and a terrible economic crisis in Poland in the 1980s, and what about the war in Yugoslavia in the 1990s, for example. The real s..-hole in the 20th century was during the Great Depression, Fascism, the Stalinist era in the east and the two WWs. Nothing compares to that, Sir.
I agree..every generation fears for the next. People in my generation had things the way we wanted them...the coming generation will have things the way they like. For me, the only thing about being old is that I won’t live to see it!

Hi, Paul! Firstly, a massive thank you for posting these. I am also dropping you a line because -- I bet you know this, if so sorry, *and* sorry for being infuriating! -- there is another ep called 'Simisola', and one called 'Road Rage'. The former has to do with perceptions of race in the town: I seem to recall that a doctor treating Wexford is Black, and his family is involved in a mystery. The latter is about plans to route a road through the locality.
As I say, you probably either are aware, or they are on the site somewhere, LOL. In which case. more fool I! Anyway, I think they are later episodes, about early/mid '90s Take care! :-)

Here, in central Europe, we used to leave babies in prams outside shops too. Nowadays people do not do it because, I suppose, it is not permitted by the law. I doubt the streets were much safer 30 years ago, though. I used to see quite a number of flashers on my way to school who I was not afraid of because they never, well, physically bothered anyone. Today this kind of pervert behaviour in public is fraught with danger, I think ;-) I believe we should not demonise today's society.
pertelote 45, you are absolutely correct. Child abduction is no more common now than ever, and it has always been extraordinarily rare. In fact, society is far less violent today than it was when this was produced, and especially in the prior decades.
@@inkyguy I remember several truly violent and run-down no-go areas in my city in the 1980s; today they are full of tourists, cafes, restaurants and I would not be afraid to walk those streets at night. One needs to be street-wise, that's all. Cheers :-)
