- Every rider should be aware of what they should and shouldn't look at when out riding on the road. There are things you can do to help improve you riding just by knowing some basic rules of where to look and what to look for including target fixation and limit points.

That 'target fixation' part made me wince. Learned that the hard way. 😖 It is really weird. One moment the whole road is out in front of you, the next, nothing else exists but the object in front of you. My personal theory is that when you panic, you fixate on the thing you know is about to happen to try to prepare yourself for impact and mitigate the damage, but in doing so, you cause that thing to happen. Self-fulfilling prophecy style. Maybe it was a useful evolutionary skill that became less useful when we started travelling at such high speeds.
Newish rider here. The fixation thing really surprised me how strong it is. I was coming into a corner a little too fast for my skill and I started looking at the edge of the road to avoid it and found myself heading more towards it ! Really bizarre. Had to really decide to look away and into the turn to avoid crashing. Now I am much better at staring into the turn - amazing how much a turn becomes less intimidating when you stare through it
Oh yeah absolutely. When I started riding I was shocked by it as well. It's so bizarre but definitely something every rider should be aware of. 🤜🤛
Haha, you want to watch out for sheep fixation. I had that on my hazard perception! I spotted them a mile off and started clicking way too soon and ended up getting no points! 😂 Anyhoo, another cool video, cheers 👌
I believe your description of target fixation and the limit point is very well articulated..In my opinion riding a motorcycle requires a lot more skill than driving a car, primarily because a motorcycle is considerably less forgiving of mistakes, even at relatively low speed. I have been riding for sixty years...never stop learning. When I first rode a motorcycle they were quite crude compered with a modern Bike. Advances in tyres, chassis geometry etc, have improved immeasurably in that time. Physics are just the same, however...... ignore them at your peril....
I've never heard of target fixation before but upon watching this video I realised that's what I've done a few times recently.. Just last week on a DAS lesson we were going round a left bend on a country road and a black 4x4 was coming towards us. The more I kept saying to myself move to position 1 the more I kept looking at the 4x4 and heading to position 3 till my instructor shouted position 1! then I looked back at position 1 and moved over. It was a sensation like the steering had just for a second locked up lol. It's great to know why on the odd occasions it has happened!!
Yeah it's a strange thing isn't it? You don't really think of it until you experience it.

Grate video pal as passed full pass 7weeks a go and was going to fast or to slow in to bends as was staying in 2 not going over to 1 or say 2 1/2 and then kinda bricking it 😂lookin at the road side n grass as side getting closer lol
Really good information again. All very helpful. What I am learning is after having a crazy idea that I want to ride maybe a little late in life (43) is that riding a bike & riding it well is not easy. There are so so many factors to consider. But that is the challenge. Anyone can jump on a bike & ride it. & lot of idiots do just that. But to ride it well & safely is a true skill which requires massive concentration & brain power. For me the enjoyment now is learning all I can & to ride & control a bike to perfection. That is my goal. These sort of videos really do help for anyone actually wanting to learn. So thanks for taking the time to make new & old bikers more safe. We’ll done.
Appreciate that, Danny. The way I see it is you're never to old to learn to ride and riding a bike is one of those things that you're always learning, but taking your time and building up your skill level, experience and confidence is by far the best way to ride. 🤜🤛

I’ve just come across your videos and they’re so helpful. I’m getting back into riding after 12 years. My biggest worry is nerves. I’m so worried that every car sitting at a junction is going to pull out on me 😢. Any tips for more confidence or is it just time?
Hey, Seton. Yeah cars at junctions are always a worry. You're always best looking at the wheel rim of the car, it's much easier to spot small movements in the wheel. Small movements could indicate the driver may pull out. As for confidence, it's really just getting road time. Ride roads you know until you fell comfortable, then venture out a few more miles. Go to a quiet car park somewhere and practice all your slow maneuver stuff. Having that nailed can give you a massive confidence boost. 🤜🤛

So when in a corner do you focus on the limit point ?
I have definitely had to internally shout at myself to NOT look at something on a couple of occasions. It’s like you are a rabbit trapped in the headlights. So weird we do it.
Yeah it's one of those weird human responses that we have. I've also had to give myself a grilling a few times 😂
My license states I have Class A for bikes. I passed my test in 83.
Do grandfather rights still apply or if not, what steps do I need to obtain my full bike license? I'm 66 years old in the UK.
"Many who learnt to drive in a car will also apparently be licensed to drive an A-class motorbike. However, if you have 79(3) numbering next to it, you will be restricted to tricycles only. Depending on when you passed your test, you will need to complete compulsory basic training to ride an AM-class moped and, for anything more powerful, in many cases a practical test."
Pop into your local motorcycle training centre for a chat, they will be able to elaborate on that and answer any other questions you might have far better than me.
