STORM BABET: Cars underwater in Dundee street as more rain forecast

- Flooding from Storm Babet has led to properties being damaged in Dundee, with roads closed around the city.
The council has opened a rest centre for those affected by the severe weather.
Dundee City Council said: “Storm Babet is bringing incredibly challenging conditions, particularly in the north and west of the city. “This includes roads disruption, flood damage to properties and fallen trees.”
It continued: “Flood gates at Broughty Ferry and Riverside have been closed due to the heavy rain and high winds. “Sepa has issued a flood alert for Dundee and Angus. “Residents in flood-prone areas are recommended to stock up on their own flood prevention including sandbags or door flood stops from DIY stores and builders’ merchants.”

This is what happens when:
1. Local Councils repeatedly neglect the maintenance of drainage..
2. Continous housing development which is concreting over the countryside meaning rainwater is not absorbed by the soil, but is being channelled straight into rivers....
Except that the drainage systems worked fine up until a few years ago…
No one is going to change their lifestyle, because people won’t do their jobs.
@@jungletiger1900 you just said that blaming things wouldn't solve anything... then you blame the use of fossil fuels... make your mind up... 🙄

It always about the money......
Too many new builds on flood plains, the building contractors should be sued by the insurance companies.
There was a small housing estate in Farringdon near to Alton Hampshire, which was built on a flood plain. It has now been removed, guess why!
It's always somebody else's fault
@@margin606covering everywhere in concrete isn't going to help. Neither are all the newcomers that all need houses.
Things are only going to get worse in the UK!
As well as the council planners, for dereliction of duty and due diligence.... I'm sure they knew the place was prone to flooding before planning was granted.... Or at least, should have known.
Unfortunately, no one is safe nowadays, no matter where our houses were built. Serious difficulties due to a significant increase in natural disasters will begin from 2024 worldwide. And by 2030 there may be nobody left, because the conditions won't be suitable for life.
We will face such a level of destruction all over the world, that no country alone can cope with it. To fix the situation, unity and efforts of all humanity are needed.
To stop destructive processes, we need to build the *Creative* *Society.* Then, by combining scientific potential and using advanced technologies, we can solve climate problems.
Creative Society is a peaceful, safe and fair world without conflicts, crises, poverty, inflation. In the Creative Society human life will be the highest value, so everything will be done to secure and improve it.
That’s what happens when you get a lot of rain in a few days, down here in the south it happens a lot because councils don’t suck out drains no more ,I walk my dog a lot and always see drains that are packed solid, then obviously the water can’t go anywhere. Councils are to blame for a lot of this 👍🏼
I haven't seen a drain cleaner lorry for years.☹
@@nafs53 yes me to
The council have more important things to do like housing the migrants.
I am sure that independence will sort all of these issues.
Isn't about time they reintroduced dredging rivers to clear out the silt etc that is causing a lot of flooding?
I agree with you but, from my limited knowledge they tended to only dredge rivers that were navigable for shipping.... and not dredge the further inland you got.
They still dredge the Manchester Ship Canal (which still has 10,000-15000 tonne coasters down it). They have also started to dredge the river Weaver in Cheshire (not been done for the past 40yrs) and guess what..... Nothwich has seen 3 floods in 20yrs!
Northwich Town centre is the confluence of both the river Dane & the Weaver, so heavy rainfall over a concerted period makes it worse.
Dredging is actually the worst thing you can do to a river. It’s counter intuitive but if you dredge, the water has very little resistance to its flow and floods quicker. The main aim is to slow it down but it needs to be dumped into a flood plain. What helps is a watercourse that meanders but that’s not possible when you get a months rain in 24 hours. Dredging rivers for shipping is to allow ships with a deep draught to navigate along the river.
Building all over the place isn't helping. That's why we need to stop all the new comers. It's only going to get worse!
@@AntonyBall-hm4jo As a kid I remember every year they came and dredged out a burn, once they stopped a section of road a mile or so away flooded constantly every time heavy rain came.
Maybe folks should stop paving and tarring their gardens. At least their cars will be parked off the street when the get flooded.
Exactly what we got in Cork on Wednesday . Best wishes to the people impacted.
“Residents in flood-prone areas are recommended to stock up on their own flood prevention including sandbags or door flood stops from DIY stores and builders’ merchants.”
Probably homes built on former FLOOD PLAINS.
A lot of the first area in the video clip was originally a bog. Of course modern man, being all knowing, drained the bogs, the lochs, and is then so surprised by the effects of a wee downpour.
I remember when that used to be all fields.
When you fell 16 million tress in Scotland were else can the water go, Forestry Scotland are to blame felling trees and not replanting and allowing the topsoil to be washed away so there is nothing to hold back the water from the valleys and mountains. Their replacements ,wind turbines, do not hold the moisture in the ground to be released slowly like trees did and the access roads make perfect channels for all the rain water to flow down and into the rivers to cause the flooding. Forestry Scotland is publicly owned bought out by the SNP led Holyrood council so they could make a quick profit on the timber then create windfarms on the land now devoid of trees so less bird strikes, but yet again it is the people who suffer.
❤❤❤
please shut up! how many of those trees were felled in Angus!? thats right hardly any! this has nothing to do with trees and everything to do with a warm front being locked into place by an scandinavian cold high! its called weather
It`s the same everywhere ,councils not cleaning the gutters /drains . It takes 6 months to fill out Health and Safety forms just to use a broom.......
Not replanting? If you don't include the 300 million which have been planted.
@@aa-xg3ctwhere have they been planted
Ordnance and survey are your friend when buying a new house or in these times even renting , check those contours and re-evaluate those flood plains and overflows where culverts can block running under roads , councils are not cleaning ditches, flood channels or removing silt and debris from the sewers and road side drainage system. I'd be drawing red rings on maps round every flooded area if i was thinking of moving to any of these flooded places (Edited to enter /renting)
Ask the planner who enabled the build and the company/ies who built them there?.
Exactly - now these householders will have high insurance premiums forevermore.
You'd be gutted if that was your property or car. Feel for you peeps x

I feel sorry for those people but surely they where given ample warning regarding the storm, why couldn't they have moved their vehicles up to higher ground 😕
Nature, always wins.
Normal Scottish weather, the council needs to clear the drains!
Definitely not normal Scottish weather
They have built the houses on a flood plain they should be held to account
So sorry to see this.
Anyone for monoblock driveway 1000s of ex council house's have it now drainage is at an altime low
Oh my heavens!!😮
i feel for the owners but what does anyone expect when the house builder builds homes at the bottom end of a dip in the landscape ! water runs and pools down hill not up.
Better built your house on top of hill. I have never water in my basement.
This weather was expected ... Why didn't they park higher up in the street ? 🙄
Like a sump!
You could maybe expect the local council, having local knowledge, to demand builders to plan and install adequate and over proportional drainage when submitting their prospect plans for approval. Due diligence etc
I have great sympathy for people flooded out of their homes and business but have often wondered how much runoff water there is from Scottish Windfarms. I don't know the amount of preparation and concrete is used in Scottish sites but found this information from the USA.
Lafarge provided Type I Portland cement from its Paulding plant to Irving Concrete of Ohio, which built a portable ready-mix batch plant to produce about 122,500 cubic yards of concrete for the project. The construction of 15 to 20-foot-deep concrete foundations to support all of the 328-foot-high towers with 2-MW turbines required 30,000 tons of cement. On average, each of these below-ground support systems used 60 truckloads of concrete (750 cubic yards), which was poured in two steps. A 2-ft. thick mud matte was poured first to create a solid base and then an upper pedestal where the tower connects was poured in step two. The huge bolts that fasten to the tower were embedded into the upper section of the concrete. Quality testing was conducted at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days to ensure a solid cure.
I would think similar amounts of concrete are used in Scottish Windfarms and since concrete is nonporous there will not be water retention unlike when moorland, woods, and nature's other natural barriers slow and soak up rainfall. Without these natural barriers there is no delay between the rainfall and the water runoff into streams and rivers adding to flood risks.
Bro, the drain at the bottom of the hill is probably blocked with leaves. 😄
Lol
your average car park has ten times the amount of water run off compared to a wind turbine, nevermind the fact most of them are out in the country...
Mince pal ! A turbine as a negligible footprint compared to a road or a housing estate , part of the problem is called Autumn ! Leaves fall by the millions of tonnes and it usually rains much of the time and skint councils don’t hoover oot the drains anymore because London don’t give Edinburgh enough of our revenues back, so cooncils have to make cut backs .
When’s the last time you seen a cooncil sooking oot a drain ?
Maybe if the SNP had spent more money on flood defences rather than the millions spent on an independence folly this would be far less destructive to the Scottish public.
Independence at any cost . The snp don't care
Wonder how the electric cars are coping.
Best not to live near rivers or in low lying areas
It would have been cheaper to rent a carrier for the weekend when there is a red river warning on low lying streets. So sad.
Living in a dip is a no no
This weather was expected ... Why not oark your car higher up in the street ? 🙄
They shut down the drains. Go look
Why so much rain? Why so much and so common now,as opposed to years ago? Why would that be i wonder?
Why, it is cyclical. We've had this before, will have it again. Of course, the government and councils could upgrade the drains, make sure building is not in flow zone, a dip, etc. Could learn a thing or two from the ancients who never had these issues when rain was torrential, they knew how to build and more importantly, where to build.
Climate change.
Oceans are getting warmer. The 361 million square kilometers world wide therefore contribute, by increased evaporation, more water vapour to create clouds. More clouds, more rain.

why so much rain in 1953 when it killed 300 people, and why isnt this rain Boiling? and why do i have to keep paying higher and higher heating bills every winter for many many years its been Global warming, now Global Boiling, but my heating goes on every winter.

Not as if there wasn’t enough warning to move your car to higher ground and prepare your house as much as possible.
That’s what happens when you fell over 12 million trees to build wind turbines on land.
Not really realted. Trees are always good but they wouldn't stop this flood unless you plantee them instead of building the street.
@@dasreichtis realted👍🏻
if you look at that flooded cul de sac its on a slope and new builds on greenbelt which would have been pasture to soak away the rain ! this is one of the causes and not climate nonsense
I thought the large wind farms were above the Grampians clustered around inverness? and not on the same watershed as Dundee and the Tay.

I really do feel sorry for the people affected with this flooding, but, is this government going to ask other countries for help for these poor people as this country would send help and lots of money to help them if this happened. I wonder if this government is going to help these people who have probably lost everything they own, but I doubt it. They never help their own people.
Maybe youtubes advert of nano car spray "the all in one solution " might work here!
storm is incoming floods possible - people still park their cars in the low ground when they live next to a perfectly good hill with parking space. Smart. @ 0:30
Spot on 👌!
This is why car manufacturers tell new owners not to drink the battery acid in the user manual, why there's warnings on hairdryers about not using them in the shower.... Why a packet of PK warns it may contain traces of nuts etc
