Little trivia about the film, in case no one has already mentioned it: It's kinda hard to explain how big the novel was when it first came out. It was the first of it's kind, a story told from the perspective of the vampire. It developed a fanbase as devoted as the LOTR novels, or Trekkies. So when the film was announced people went wild. But then it was revealed that Tom Cruise had been cast as Lestat and EVERYBODY got pissed. At that time Cruise was known for Top Gun and his 'all American boy' persona. Nobody thought he was right to play everybody's favorite bad-boy vampire. Even Anne Rice was pissed about it. It was a studio decisions. She almost pulled her name off the project. So the studio heads brought her in for an pre-production screening and she was blown away by Cruise. The original VHS release actually has a 5 minute opening where Anne Rice praises the film and gives Cruise her blessing. Funnily a lot of his fans were pissed about him doing the role because it was so opposite of his persona. He nailed it.
Yeah, and may I add WHY he nailed Lestat’s character: Because he happened to be the only actor of the entire cast who had actually read the books beforehand. So he knew that Lestat had originally been a French nobleman and an actor, hence all the beautiful Shakespeare quotes and the drama. My all-time favorite scene is the one when he tries to persuade Louis to drink the blood of the prostitutes he brought home and puts one of them in a coffin. It’s all a dramatic act just to push Louis to finally embrace his nature. Cruise conveyed that beautifully, he was perfect for that role.
When Lastat would say " Im going to give you the choice I never had". According to the vampire Lastat, his maker Magnus really didnt give him the choice. All he told him was not to go into the sunlight or he would be burned to a cinder, where his coffin & riches were & that's it before he threw himself in the fire completely ending himself & left Lastat all alone.

My absolute favorite movie. I was always afraid of watching reactions to it because I didn't think any of the younger reactors would like it, so thank you very much- you actually seemed to see to the heart of this movie. Great commentary!
Best vampire movie ever made IMO. Based on the outstanding novel of the same name by author Anne Rice (it’s an entire series of books including The Vampire Lestat and The Vampire Armand, and they are all 🔥including Queen Of The Damned where she wrote an original theory and answer to where all vampires originate from and how the came to be-which at the time was the first of its kind to do so), it’s nothing short of a masterpiece. Epic in scale. Etherial in performance and script. Existential in premise and plot. Told in the first person perspective of a vampire, it still remains unique in the genre. Oscar nominated and completely brilliant all the way around. And yes that is Antonio Banderas and a very young Kirstin Dunst as Claudia, in her very first role that to me, still remains her best to date, and a performance that was nominated for a Golden globe.
The movie is one of my favorites one of the most aesthetically pleasing pieces of cinema and the ending scene is one of the best ending scenes in the history of cinema
Great movie, that is much deeper in tone and carries more thematic weight compared to typical vampire flicks. It touches on some interesting themes of immortality and death, and the burden and benefits of each. Side note: this movie resonates with the homosexual community. Replace “vampirism” with homosexuality in the film, and suddenly the plot (with Lestat, Louis, and adopted child) fits perfectly into a gay lifestyle drama, and the struggles of finding life long happiness in that community.
Yep, there's a lot of metaphors in this, and I can only assume it's deliberate. Some people think it's subtle but I don't think so, it's all quite blatant and obvious. You can really see the sexual tension and romantic motivations with Lestat and Louis, and then Armand, too.
the aspect of a kid becoming immortal was portrayed in such a sad way for this story. How many have thought, wouldn't it be great to be a kid and never grow up... maybe not.
I came here today after the awful news about the Queen Anne Rice to pay an homage to her legacy. This movie was the only one she agreed to let it be made and by far the best one. Thank you Anne Rice. You were there for a really formative period in my life and I'll be forever grateful.
1994 was such a great year for movies. Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Killing Zoe, In the?mouth of madness, the Crow, Cabin Boy, even good old Brainscan.
I haven't read the book since high school, but I think Claudia was only five years old when she was turned. Which seems even worse than being stuck at ten, like in the film.
Have you seen Let the Right One In? It's an even more unique vampire movie and would make for a great reaction if you haven't seen it. It is a foreign film though, and therefore requires subtitles.
You should definitely read the Vampire Lestat. It's a good read and it helps you to really understand Lastat & who he was while he was human & everything after he was turned.
The funny thing is everyone was up in arms about Tom being in the movie. They thought he would ruin it lol, even the writer was against him. But he was great
It is so interesting to see someone come at this movie from a completely removed perspective and immediately hone in on the author's own philosophy and explanations. When you said "I can't help but like him." that is basically who lestat is. He's the brat prince. Because I came to this movie from a different, adolescent place, I never really got an untethered reaction opportunity with this film and I am kind of jealous because I think I would've appreciated Lestat much more in the vein of the author if I had come to this fresh.
This was a very underrated movie. I read the first book years ago and then saw the movie. Pitt was said to have hated the role and wanted to leave the role altogether. That changed when the producers threatened to take his money and sue him. I wish this series was made into a tv series.
This was one my most favorite horror films of all-time. And I love horror films, from the silent film era of the 1920's to the future beyond 2021. 100 Years of Thrillers and Chillers..
This movie was the first "adult movie" I've watched when I was 8😅 My favourite vampire movie of all time. And the book series even more amazing. Lestat is my favourite character and in the book his nick name is the "Sweet Prince". if you read the series, you will understand that he is not a bad character nor he's good. And yes, he's sexually fluid.
YES I am so glad that you liked this movie it’s one of my favorites…I could tell that you were really into it and that just made me happy😃😃 That was Kirsten Dunst that played Claudia she actually blew me away when I first saw this her amazing performance at such a young age and her death still haunts me I mean it was just so sad. And yes that was Antonio Banderas playing Armand it was the first movie I remember seeing him in. Lestat OMG Lestat can you picture anyone else but Tom Cruise in that part? Anne Rice who wrote the novel was not happy when they chose him but after seeing his performance she was blown away and completely agreed he was right for the part. & Brad Pitt what is not to love about Louis?? Of course that scene in Paris with the scythe is my favorite ❤️❤️ you know why lol Great reaction 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Alec Baldwin, Daniel Day Lewis, Gabriel Byrne, Sting, David Bowie, Julian Sands, and Keanu Reeves were considered for Lestat. In fact most of the actors, minus Reeves, were considered for the role of Dracula in Francis Ford Coppola's film.
SOOO... As an "Interview with a vampire" addict for many many years... Lestat created Louis cause he was lonly, and he created Claudia for Louis, so that he wont leave. He did everything out of his own selfish needs, not caring about the feelings of his own companions that he created. BUT, he is living his best life, and doesnt care about anything else. If I was a Vampire, I would definatly be Lestat (With a little bit of Louis) Claudia is played by Kirsten Dunst Armand really is Antonio Banderas BTW, you were surprised at the begining when he says he likes crucifix. This is one of the reasons why Vampires are my favorite genre in any platform, books, movies, plays or whatever, because the writers always invent their stories fresh, they always give some sort of a twist to the story.
I have all the books from the chronicles. "Lestat the vampire" "Queen of the Damned" and "Armand" are my favorite books. Each book is the biography of each of the characters. Specially "Lestat the vampire" is my favorite book of all time. And the "Queen of The Damned" movie is nowhere near as good as this one but it's worth watching. Stuart Townsend plays Lestat.
Yes, that was Mary Jane (Kirsten Dunst) and that was Antonio Banderas with lots of makeup on lol. I love this movie with passion, i first saw it when i was too young to see stuff like this lol but it became one of my favorites. Love Lestat as a character too. This, the TV show "The Strain" and the 1st Blade movie are my top vampire cultural references. Just suscribed! Great reaction!
@@JCARTSARTS982 please react to my favorite vampire movie The Lost Boys (1987) it's directed by the late Joel Shumacher & It stars Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Jason Patric, & Kiefer Sutherland. It's one of two vampire that came out in 1987 with the other being Near Dark.
If memory serves, Ann Rice had said something about struggling with her faith at the time of writing the Vampire Chronicles, so Lestat is a hedonist and atheist, taking pleasure in all that long life had given him, while Louis was still struggling with an attachment to meaning and morality, not yet comfortable with the freedom his new vampire nature was granting him. That, I think, is why at the end, Louis was content and willing to tell his story. The books are obviously more impactful, but this was a good film, and the inspiration for a group Halloween costume-theme when I was in my youth, where we went as a group of vampires, to a Halloween ball, and then strolled the streets in a historic district in the city, where we fielded plenty of tourist and local photo-requests.
For the record I enjoyed Queen of the Damned a lot. But....it was a completely missed opportunity to be faithful to the book and they messed it up. I consider it an elseworlds movie.
6:40 - 6:44 Well, who wouldn't be tempted with Thandie Newton? Maybe this is how she and Cruise ended up working together again in Mission Impossible 2.
I remember a teenaged Kirsten Dunst going on Celebrity Jeopardy and missing a question about this movie. Trebek even pointed out that she should have gotten the answer since she starred in the movie.
I would recommend AVOIDING THE SEQUEL AT ALL COST!!!!!! But...now that you’ve seen this you should read the 2nd book in the series THE VAMPIRE LESTAT as it tells the story of Lestat’s history, how he turned AND what he did during this movie while he was gone. It’s actually one of the best books in the series.
27:06 just in case you didn't know, Tequila Sunrise (1988), is a real, very underrated movie starring Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer (Catwoman, the original Selina Kyle from Batman Returns, 1992), and the iconic Scarface with Al Pacino.
lmao I know I went downstairs and looked at the cover after the movie and had a jaw dropping moment to see Antonio's name on the front of the cover haha !!.
I read the book first(snuck it because I certainly wasn't supposed to take my mom's books!!) And loved it. When the movie came out I saw it in the theatre 8 or 9 times and it's still one of my favorite movies and books. It's still such a great, almost timeless movie. Thanks for reviewing it!
Great film and even better novel. I read it in the early 90s. They omit the love story between Lestate and Louie from the film which was a shame but it was the 90s I suppose, Hollywood not quite there yet with LGBT main characters in a movie.
Anne Rice´s vampires blood is flamable so they can be burn quite easily. And yes, fire can kill a vampire, except for some of the older ones who are too powerful even to be destroy by the sunlight but for most of them is death or to be heavily injured for a long long time until they recover. They are inmortal, inmune to illness, they dont age, but some wounds can take forever to heal and fire burns are some of these wound that take a lot to heal. A young vampire can heal quicker if he drinks the blood of an old one.
Loved your reaction, so good to see someone react to this film who likes vampires, has obviously seen vampire movies before and analyzes on a deeper level than just the surface, unlike many other reactions I’ve seen. If you haven’t read the books yet, I highly recommend you do so, they’re so beautifully written; Anne Rice had a wonderful style. Once you start, you cannot put the books down again. Just make sure to read in the right order. Most books of the Vampire Chronicles are written from Lestat’s pov except for Interview and Queen of the Damned. The next one after Interview is The Vampire Lestat in which Lestat tells his life story and how he became immortal.
Isn't it funny how it was Antonio Banderas🤭 This movie screams did it before Twilight, True blood and Underworld was even thought of in the big screen🤣.

Great reaction. One of my favorite movies because I love Anne Rice, the author of the Vampire Chronicles. And the movie kept pretty close to the original book. A few things were changed but, the movie is so good. Unlike the sequel. They tried to put two books in one short movie. Omitted some very important characters and gave Lestat Armand's origin story. It took me years to actually come to like the movie for the movies sake. But, at least we will be able to see the rest of the books on the small screen. Since they are making a TV series on the Chronicles. And not just the Vampire Chronicles but, the Mayfair Witches as well. So we will be getting the crossover. Sorry this is so long. The Vampire Chronicles...no, Anne Rice's writing excites me. Again, GREAT reaction. 👍🏼😊
As a huge fan of The Vampire Chronicles (I've read all the books at least twice), I was very skeptical about this movie but I ended up loving it. The acting was great, but the production values were off the chart. I wish I could say the same about Queen of the Damned. It's one of my favorite books of the series and I was hoping the film would be as good as this one. Alas, no. It was a total piece of crap. AMC recently bought the rights to all the Vampire Chronicles as well as the Mayfair Witches. I'm VERY excited to see what they do with it. I've been waiting years for a film or tv show based on the Mayfair witches. As part of the AMC deal, Anne Rice (the author of the books) will serve as Executive Producer on any film or show made so I'm sure they will be outstanding.
Anne Rice, Author Of the novel, harshly criticized Tom Cruise and tried to boycott him from starring in the movie, fearing he might ruin the performance.
In the book, the characters are very bisexual. They toned down the homoeroticism in the novel because back then people were still uncomfortable with homosexuality in the media. As a mortal, Lestat had a male lover, and Louis and Armand were lovers for many years before Louis finally left him.
@Marcus Sexuality is about more than just sexual activity. Something can be homoerotic without there being any kind of sex at all. Because you're right, sexuality is about sensuality too. And you're right that Rice's vampires go past that too.
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉 I'm glad you enjoyed it, however the ending is very ambiguous as to whether or not Christian Slater would become a vampire or not. We would never know. The sequel, Queen Of the Damned, retconned this. Aaliyah was in the lead role of the Queen Vampire until her death In a plane crash in 2001 at the age of 22.
You were wondering why Lestat bit Louis: in the books Lestat explains how when he saw Louis he reminded Lestat of someone he had loved named Nicolas who had died when Lestat was still fairly new at being a vampire.
I read the book when I was ten. Have loved it ever since. I can tell you the book is so much better than the movie but the movie does it justice. Also this is my fave roll Tom Cruise ever played. Hi JCARTS Arts, AMC, the network behind such hits as "Breaking Bad" &"The Walking Dead" is going to readapt "Interview With The Vampire" as a TV Series. The first season, which will consist of eight episodes, is slated to start filming later this year. It will premiere on AMC next year. Actor Jacob Anderson, most famous for his role as Greyworm on "Game of Thrones," will follow in Brad Pitt's footsteps as the second actor to play Louis, while actor Sam Reid will succeed both Tom Cruise & Stuart Townsend in the role of Lestat, becoming the third actor to play the iconic role. Townsend wound up replacing Cruise as Lestat in the ill-fated 2002 film adaption of Rice's third book in the "Vampire Chronicles." Queen of the Damned. Author Anne Rice & her son Christopher will serve as executive producers on the show.
Lestat De Lioncourt is an amazing character, his nickname is "The Brat Prince" which honestly fits him to a T. 🖤 Louis De Ponte Du Lac is THE classic tortured soul and we love him for it, his wrath, his affection translates so well. 🌌 Claudia irritated me initially but I understood her, a fully grown woman with all of her needs and emotions constantly being ignored because she was trapped in a child's body. 🥀 Daniel Malloy aka "The Boy" who interviewed Louis is an interesting character because in the books he becomes something of a substitute for Lestat's lost family, something I wouldn't wish on anyone.
Definitely one of the top vampire films. But I'd also recommend two lesser known titles that have held up pretty good as well: 'Near Dark' with an awesome performance by Bill Paxton and 'Only Lovers Left Alive' with Tilda Swinton.
In the books, Lestat is known as The Brat Prince. So fitting 😂

Books are Awesome. Lestat is EVERYTHING!
the aspect of a kid becoming immortal was portrayed in such a sad way for this story. How many have thought, wouldn't it be great to be a kid and never grow up... maybe not.
In the books Claudia is actually about 5 which was way worse
I came here today after the awful news about the Queen Anne Rice to pay an homage to her legacy. This movie was the only one she agreed to let it be made and by far the best one.
Thank you Anne Rice. You were there for a really formative period in my life and I'll be forever grateful.
1994 was such a great year for movies. Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, Killing Zoe, In the?mouth of madness, the Crow, Cabin Boy, even good old Brainscan.
Oh for sure :) !!
Ace Ventura came out in 94 too… is it bad that I was 12 watching these movies? 😅
The American remake (made in the same year) was quite good too! That was called "Let Me In".
@@bobmessier5215 it was trash
You should definitely read the Vampire Lestat. It's a good read and it helps you to really understand Lastat & who he was while he was human & everything after he was turned.
3:18 Tom Cruise: "There's uh-😂😂There's no wire work by the way. I do all my own flying. I can actually fly!"
Saw this in the theater when it came out, worth every penny.
And yes, that’s Kirsten Dunst (Mary Jane). She was like 12 and this was her FIRST movie! LOL no pressure!!
And yes that’s Antonio Banderas.
I salute you for reacting to one of the best Vampire adaptations ever!....Tom Cruise kills it in this!!!
Thank you for the comment Nebulous !!! :) Really enjoyed the movie a lot and the more I think about it the better it gets !.

@@JCARTSARTS982 yeah the ending gave me goosebumps, just imagining the Vampire Lestat in the modern world 😈🤯
Quite literally…
It is being made for a tv series 😁😁
1:57, the movie is epic in scope and in storytelling.
This was one my most favorite horror films of all-time. And I love horror films, from the silent film era of the 1920's to the future beyond 2021. 100 Years of Thrillers and Chillers..
Thank you for the comment Bob !!!
Lestat is my favorite literary character of all time. ❤
Love the costumes in this film, so pretty! :)
“I assume I need no introduction 😁”
This movie was the first "adult movie" I've watched when I was 8😅
My favourite vampire movie of all time. And the book series even more amazing. Lestat is my favourite character and in the book his nick name is the "Sweet Prince". if you read the series, you will understand that he is not a bad character nor he's good. And yes, he's sexually fluid.
YES I am so glad that you liked this movie it’s one of my favorites…I could tell that you were really into it and that just made me happy😃😃
That was Kirsten Dunst that played Claudia she actually blew me away when I first saw this her amazing performance at such a young age and her death still haunts me I mean it was just so sad.
Of course that scene in Paris with the scythe is my favorite ❤️❤️ you know why lol
Great reaction 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
My favorite vampire film right here that a reaction channel finally reacts to! This should be good.
Hey I hope you enjoy the reaction Lenny !! thank you for checking it out !.
David Bowie also already had a credit in a vampire movie with The Hunger starring Catherine Deneuve and Susan Sarandon.
10:24, yes it was because he still wants Louis to join him.
If I was a Vampire, I would definatly be Lestat (With a little bit of Louis)
Claudia is played by Kirsten Dunst
Armand really is Antonio Banderas
BTW, you were surprised at the begining when he says he likes crucifix.
This is one of the reasons why Vampires are my favorite genre in any platform, books, movies, plays or whatever, because the writers always invent their stories fresh, they always give some sort of a twist to the story.
I’d love to watch this movie a hundred times. Chef’s kiss
My favourite is "Blood and Gold" The story of Marius and "those who must be kept"
My faves are The vampire Lestat and Menoch the devil with Blod and Gold a close third.
Thank you so much for the subscription :) more content coming soon !!!.
Glad you enjoyed it. One of my favorite movies. The entire vampire series novels by Anne Rice is excellent. Little girl is Kirsten Dunst.
7:17, that's right, you must drink warm blood, and not cold blood.
I adore this movie. My personal fave is Claudia, she's on my top 26 favorite characters of all time list.
Top 5 favorite vampire movie for me such a classic. Queen of the Damned isn't as good but it's a fun watch
For the record I enjoyed Queen of the Damned a lot. But....it was a completely missed opportunity to be faithful to the book and they messed it up. I consider it an elseworlds movie.
You really should read this Book. along with The Vampire Lestat and Queen of The Damned.
6:40 - 6:44 Well, who wouldn't be tempted with Thandie Newton? Maybe this is how she and Cruise ended up working together again in Mission Impossible 2.
She was dating Pitt at that time.
The girl is a young Kirsten Dunst
My absolute favorite Movie of all time
27:06 just in case you didn't know, Tequila Sunrise (1988), is a real, very underrated movie starring Mel Gibson, Kurt Russell and Michelle Pfeiffer (Catwoman, the original Selina Kyle from Batman Returns, 1992), and the iconic Scarface with Al Pacino.
*That IS Actually ANTONIO BANDERAS DUDE lol*
👍👍
lmao I know I went downstairs and looked at the cover after the movie and had a jaw dropping moment to see Antonio's name on the front of the cover haha !!.
12:30, yes, Kirsten Dunst.
Hey thank you for the comment and support Ashara Crow !!
Great film and even better novel. I read it in the early 90s. They omit the love story between Lestate and Louie from the film which was a shame but it was the 90s I suppose, Hollywood not quite there yet with LGBT main characters in a movie.
I read part of the book but I thought he had a thing for some plantation girl, and that he hated lestat's guts.
Rice showed how as a vampire you would still bring your true mortal personality with you.
That really is Antonio Banderas.
3:24, thats the reason why he turned him into a vampire.
That's heartbreaking for poor Claudia. I weep for her.
3:21 "Oh, that sucks"
My mind: *Literally*
8:43, and Louis is slowly losing his humanity.
Have you seen Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), it has also a verry familiar cast! 👌🏼✌🏼
Know why he looks like Antonio bandares? Because he is!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣👍
@@Helgrimr you just contradicted your own opinion
Thanks for the video!! See you later!! Stay safe.😉 I'm glad you enjoyed it, however the ending is very ambiguous as to whether or not Christian Slater would become a vampire or not. We would never know. The sequel, Queen Of the Damned, retconned this. Aaliyah was in the lead role of the Queen Vampire until her death In a plane crash in 2001 at the age of 22.
Great review. I love that movie and it's set in my hometown, of New Orleans.
“He looks a little like Antonio Banderas”
Everyone: doh!!
Also HOW AMAZING IS KIRSTEN DUNST AS A LITTLE BABY?!
There is a book called “The vampire Lestat”. It explains why Lestat says “I’ll give you the choice I never had”
“It looks like Antonio Banderas”
Lol! It IS
Lestat is a sad man as is Armand
Armand was abused as a child in ways I won’t say here. Made a vampire when he was old enough. Lestat was basically raped and made a vampire too
That was Antonio Banderas
I LAUGHED OUT LOUD when you said he looks a little bit like Antonio Banderas.
I just rewatched this move after years since the last time I saw it and it’s still so damn good!
I hope you have the read the book by now. They are amazing.
I had this soundtrack. Sad it didn't include Lestat's piano solo.
I'm watching these Interview with a Vampire reactions in honor of a great author. RIP Anne Rice.
Hi JCARTS Arts,
AMC, the network behind such hits as "Breaking Bad" &"The Walking Dead" is going to readapt "Interview With The Vampire" as a TV Series. Author Anne Rice & her son Christopher will serve as executive producers on the show.
look at his crazy eyes-- -lol..his strange too long hair.. his vampire jaw..
and then ofc the title screen . .. he IS a vampire
Lestat De Lioncourt is an amazing character, his nickname is "The Brat Prince" which honestly fits him to a T.
🖤
Louis De Ponte Du Lac is THE classic tortured soul and we love him for it, his wrath, his affection translates so well.
🌌
Claudia irritated me initially but I understood her, a fully grown woman with all of her needs and emotions constantly being ignored because she was trapped in a child's body.
🥀
Daniel Malloy aka "The Boy" who interviewed Louis is an interesting character because in the books he becomes something of a substitute for Lestat's lost family, something I wouldn't wish on anyone.
Lestat is the best villain ever created. He's evil but you love him.
I think you should try queen of the damned. Its definately not as good as this but lestat is the main character but a slightly different take on him
I just realized, this year will mark the 100th Anniversary of Nosferatu (1922)!
Definitely one of the top vampire films. But I'd also recommend two lesser known titles that have held up pretty good as well: 'Near Dark' with an awesome performance by Bill Paxton and 'Only Lovers Left Alive' with Tilda Swinton.
It was the music of a rock band that opened lastats eyes to be himself again
