Rice's shift to vampire media is as pivotal as Polidori (before The Vampyre they were feral monsters, like the one Louis and Claudia meet in eastern Europe in the book).
When Twilight was the rage, the parallels to Rice's vamps were too hard for me to ignore. Beautiful alluring predators, each with a special gift, whose skin turns hard as stone as they age... all from Rice 😅

Let me just say this; this movie is a brilliant 90's movie because there were many things to like about this film, including Kirsten Dunst's performance as Claudia (who deserved an Oscar). But it has it's faults here and here, like how Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt hated each other during the making of the film (which is why the chemistry is lacking). It still was the reason I got into Anne Rice's books. I hope you get to binge the show after this! It's amazing!

The vampires in the books and movie are ACE. They have no sexuality because when they become vampires their sex organs don't work anymore. With men they cant even get an erection and their genitals kind of shrivel up. So their relationships only matter when there is an emotional and complex bond connecting vampires to eachother. They are beyond the constraints of gender and don't see that when choosing a partner to make or fall in love with. What is described in the books is how indescribable and beyond physical pleasure, the experience of drinking blood is. That is sex for them especially when they drink from one another, they pass on knowledge and memories, and the older ones can make weaker vampires stronger with their ancient blood.
Edit: The show portrays vampire relationship more like human ones, so sex is back in. A change I don't think was necessary for Louis and Lestat would kiss and faun over each other in the books. I like the intimacy of finding other ways to express love without straight up sex. The show still has the spirit and core of the books so other than that lol, I do like it.

There are 15 books in the series, and while this book is from Louis narrative, the books after focus more on Lestat adventures going forward. There is kinda a sequel movie called Queen of the Damn which isnt the best...but the late Aaliyah was amazing in her last role as Queen Akasha, the mother of vapmpires. The series is really good, but they made enough changes from the source material to make it an alternate reality, but keeping its essence.

    "That is so messed up!"
    🤣🤣🤣
Lestat dancing with Claudia's mother is hilarious! This adaptation plays up Lestat's morbid humor 😅
My favorite little detail of Interview is that Lestat can read minds, and tries to show Louis that they can feed on criminals, but Louis is so wrapped up in his human emotions (Louis' 'dark gift') that he cannot see the rotten trees for the forest so to speak.
    "They created a monster!"
The irony being that Claudia's feeding habits weigh on Lestat's conscience (yes, he has one 😅) because she is predatory and somewhat indiscriminate - they wipe out whole families, she preys on women & children, kills for greed and envy, etc.

I thought I loved the movie until I saw the show. The show is just breathtakingly good, and makes this movie pale in comparison. The show is so soaked with drama and the characters just come to life. It is so vivid. The show is different in many ways from the books but is so much closer to the books in some other ways. But book accuracy isn’t a sticking point with me as long as the end result is good. In the end, while this movie is definitely good, I think the show is an even better piece of art and is absolutely outstanding! Definitely worth checking out if you liked this. More brutal, more romantic, and more insane.

I was a big fan of the books as a teenager (except Louis; sorry Louis fans but he is tedious!) and this film was really a great adaptation for the time. There is less homoeroticism than the books and a lot of heternormativity is introduced (no wife and child in the book).
This is basically the only film I liked Tom Cruise in and what a performance from a young Dunst! Hollywood has wasted her. She had some good roles after but not what she should have had.

“I’m surprised this hasn’t been a musical” well actually it was, there was a musical called ‘Lestat: the musical’, which is based off of the second book in the ‘Vampire Chronicles’ series called ‘The Vampire Lestat’, and goes over Lestats life from his own point of view. Also, all the music in it was written by Elton John lol

@@reneeg9406 It’s such a great series. It doesn’t get the hype it should. They just don’t make them like that anymore.

They created a musical in the 2000s called Lestat. It’s based on the first two books from The Vampire Chronicles: Interview with the Vampire AND The Vampire Lestat. The score was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. The songs are so catchy and I found myself humming the tunes days after I first watched it. There are two versions of it on UA-cam. If I remember correctly, Elton John said this musical was his biggest regret in an online article I read, again, my memory is foggy, regardless if it’s true or not, I love it personally for the interpretation of the story and I’m just simply an Elton John fan.

"I am surprised this hasn't been a musical." It has been, The Vampire Lestat book had a musical version with music written by Elton John. It had a full run on the west coast and it ended pre-maturely in NYC. I got tickets for the NYC showing but they ended the run early and refunded me. I am GUTTED to this day. There is hand-cam footage of it in youtube but they never did a professional recording of the show.

It actually has been a musical! Elton John wrote a Lestat musical in the early 2000s, but it had a very short run. It adapted mostly the second book

A year after this film came out, Ann Rice was at a book signing promoting her latest work - Memnoch the Devil. She signed all 3 of my books that I had brought : Interview with the Vampire, The vampire Lestat and Memnoch the Devil.

Is a good detail that you guys caught in the "vampires can't move on from their time" and also the fact that Louis is clumsy at reading minds, then Lestat is all ragged but then when he goes for Daniel he can drive! how did he learn how to drive but does not know what electric light is!? He is a liar.

I honestly don't think i can put into words how much i love this story. i saw this movie a year after it came out. Granted i was way WAY too young to be allowed to watch it but i still managed to (i was about 9) and ever since that first watch i wore that damn VCR tape down. when we eventually got the internet in my house when i was 15 i desperately looked for anything to do with the story online and read my first anne rice novel that same year, though in the completely wrong direction (my first book was armands book) i love the music i love the acting i love everything about it and thought never could anything top this movie. well, i was wrong. the tv show is amazing. i was sobbing my heart out over how they did claudia's death and the actor they got to play lestat is miles better then tom and this is coming from someone who has watched this movie easily 100 times in her life. i know that sounds not possible but im almost 40 ya, obsession lol. i highly reccomend you guys watch the tv show. not even to record and put on youtube just to experience it. sending much love from ireland

I don't think i had ever clicked the Like button on a video before watching, but i did today. This was one of my favorite movies growing up. My dog's name was Louis because of this movie. So I'm so glad you liked it.
Whenever I think of vampires, this is what I think of.
This was one of the first vampire stories that humanized them. Before they were always portrayed as purely evil. Twillight and The Vampire Diaries and such owe everything to Anne Rice.

Hey guys, I love your reactions! I would highly recommend the show! I 100% prefer the show to the movie. The characters are so much more complex and the relationships just so much richer and more nuanced. The show is beautiful, brutal, heartbreaking and sensual. I think you would really love it!
