😯 You are WAY more organized than I ever hope to be - I just grab pencils as I go based on what I feel like. I do usually have a rough colour combo in mind and I like to establish tentatively what elements will be what colour and if I want deep shading of softer shadows but that's about it. 😂
Haha yes! That’s how my brain tends to work. I picture it coloured and I know which pencils will suit each element. If I’m unsure or have a few different options I jot them down so I can pick one. I do like to have it figured out before I start though haha
@@MyColourfulCountryLife That is probably much better than my"figure out out as I go" approach, although I do occasionally enjoy picking a colour palette randomly and then deciding how to apply it to all the elements of the page. Your work is very beautiful and you rock at really harmonious pages so I should probably discipline myself more. 🤣
Thank you SO much for sharing your step by step process as you might not know the analysis paralysis some of us go through just thinking about coloring!! ❤
Great video. I especially loved how you discussed focal points with light and dark. I hadn’t thought about that before. Thanks for showing your process.
Hello! Brilliant. Clean & simple. But no! Just a true colorist! I’m discovering coloring books (i m doing scrap and youger i was watercolouring) & I heard about you today… receiving a coloring book I ordered on Amazon… Kerby R…😉 I do feel you can improve my way of feeling & making …🙏 Thanks for your way of telling things.. as I m going to watch a lot of your videos! I do lack confidence but I love to make things coming to life with colors, and I m sure your videos will help me to do so!🫶 And I wish you a bright merry NY! And health, and a lot of colours!🌸🦄🌸
I love ocean & puppy colouring books. There weren’t many puppy colouring books available so I created my own! I do like to figure out my colour combos before I start, but often change midway and then not like the end result. I really need to be more disciplined to sticking to my chosen palette. You always have beautiful colour combinations! ❤️🇦🇺
Thank you so much. I totally get what you mean about changing colour combos midway; it can be tricky to stick with a palette sometimes. But experimenting is part of the fun too! 😊 I’m really glad you like the colour combinations I use. Thanks again for your lovely comment! ❤️
I watch you almost everyday and I honestly learn something new with each video. Thank you for sharing your experience, knowledge and talents with us! ❤
When I watch your videos, I always learn something new and I have been colouring for a while. I am so happy you give such wonderful, clear explanations. I am looking forward to your next video, Karen. 😊😊😊❤❤❤
Thanks so much Amanda! 🤗 Happy to know you still found this useful even with the process being also second nature for you too. It can be so hard to explain things we do subconsciously haha 😁❤️🎨✏️📚
Thank you so much for the hard work you put into sharing and teaching your precious knowledge. The light vs dark to establish a focal point is a great tip!! I loved seeing your thought process when choosing your color palette. I've learned A LOT in that one single video. You're a gem, many thanks.
Omg what a great video this is. Really love your detailled explanation of the breakdown of the colors and shading and all!!! Thank you so much for sharing!❤❤
Being new to colouring I’m still exploring my colouring style from water colours and oil pastels and other mixed medias or just combining all these elements but I do love sennelier products
I absolutely LOVE your channel. Have learned so many things. This may be in another video in this series, but I would love a video on using different brands of pencils on different types of paper. For example, Kerby Rosane books, you could use Kalour and Prisma but Castle Arts don't work as good because of .... Or Amazon paper. I get that you can use any colored pencils, But more on the struggles using a particular brand. I also understand that some brands lay better or blend better. This type of video with examples would be appreciated. I hope this makes sense. I still have more videos to watch and maybe these questions are answered there. But if I don't leave a comment as I seek answers, then I forget. I am really new to coloring with pencils and alcohol markers. I've used them before but the pages look grade school. Such as coloring hard only with no blends or so many colors used. Almost used ever color of pencils, markers, or gel pens. They are a hot mess to look at. I have saved them so I can track my journey! Thank you again for these amazing and informative videos! Soon I will have the courage to share my completed pages.
Hi Janet, that's a wonderful idea. I do have one for Millie Marotta books as I know a lot of people struggle with her paper, but I haven't for any other artists so far. Also, a big thank you for the kind comments, I appreciate it 🤗
Thank you!! I haven’t watched it yet but will tonight. This is my biggest struggle. I don’t struggle with actual blending or coloring but picking colors is impossible to me.
I really enjoyed this video! I’m working on the dragonfly page converting your color combos to Black Widows. I’m so glad you talked about the glossy accents because I added my gold accents on the dragonfly page with a fine tip Posca gold paint pen. I had a hard time staying in the lines and did smear a small section. It’s always so upsetting but when I came back to the page I just let it go. I have been coloring since 2017 and I know better. Always let things dry!
Thank you so much! Ohh I know that feeling, I almost didn’t add the glossy accents and it didn’t change colour straight away either so it took me a while to notice lol Lesson learned for next time 😅🤗
New Subbie. I love your channel. I am new to coloring and tried a follow along. I noticed you started on the background. Do you have or would you be willing to show how you start the process of coloring a page. Where and why you begin where you do and follow along the process to completion. I know that’s a lot to ask. ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for the insight into your wonderful creative brain. The finished page is so nice. Now I’ll have to get this book so I can color a long with you. 😃
Great lesson, but I have a stupid question how did you know what mosque that was? I’m not very familiar with the African landscape, but I very much love Rita Berman coloring book.
Hi Neda, if you ever get stuck in Rita’s travel books. Just do a Google image search with the city name and describe the building or scenery etc and you will get some images. Rita’s images always seem to come close to the real landmark 😁
@@MyColourfulCountryLife thank for the help, I hope to see more Rita pages from you from any of her books, so far I have 2, planning on getting more I really love her illustrations, dare I say more than Johanna Basford although she is great as well.

Hi James, I actually do haha I’m planning a giveaway but I’ve also been designing a colouring accessory with a friend of mine which I can’t wait to share and it’ll also be part of the giveaway. Sample is on the way to me as we speak 😁
I love coloring have a vast collection of coloring books and supplies, but this video has been a great help for me. Unfortunately almost every time I approach a new page I struggle. That’s why color alongs have become my saving grace. Maybe with these tools I won’t struggle as thank you Do you have a list of the color combinations you use most often that’s a struggle of mine as well
You’re very welcome Terry! I hope this helps. I have a series starting tomorrow where I’ll be sharing all my favourite colour combos from my journals. Lots of different pencil brands and combos from muted to vibrant. Hopefully that will help 🥰
Regarding the glossy accents. I find the best thing to do when something like that happens is to spread the mistake around. This seems counterintuitive, but it's typically worse and more obvious to attempt to repair the damage. By working with it you make it appear intentional, even if it totally wasn't. So in this example, I would add the new pink tone to the pots, making the page once again cohesive. Also, I have moved to a Sakura glossy clear pen, I have yet to have it affect anything underneath it in a negative way. It also is less dimensional, so there is no issue coloring the next page due to lumpy texture. The only issue I have had is you need to be sure to add enough so it forms a solid layer, otherwise when the light hits it, it can look like lines vs a flat shine.
This is great advice! I should have added a bit more pink in! I do love the dimensional aspect of glossy accents. But I switched to Sakura glaze pen in clear for my last colouring page haha
@cfw900 I don’t know many that colour the large skies with pencil like I do. One who definitely does is Chris Cheng and she creates some wonderful skies, but like me she also doesn’t explain it. She just colours silently to music.

You could have a book specifically just for that to help you relax and another that you can use to practice / learn new techniques. After you colour known elements like water, grass, trees etc then you could use a colour wheel to work out which colours will go with what is already on your page. I have a video on this in my beginners playlist which is about colour theory. My other suggestion is if possible look up reference photos, Pinterest is great for this. For example if you were to colour a bouquet of flowers you could search that up and have a look at the colours in the photos, which one appeals to you most when you look at it for example it could be red and pink flowers then you could use reds and pinks on your page.
