  • Hundreds of thousands of Russians have fled their homeland since the beginning of the war in Ukraine in February 2022.
Afraid they could be sent to fight, some left by car, bicycle, even by foot, crossing into neighbouring Kazakhstan just hours after President Vladimir Putin ordered a military mobilisation.
Others decided to flee due to fear they could be punished for speaking out against the war.
Kazakhstan has largely welcomed the sudden influx, but for many new arrivals, the future is uncertain.
101 East meets young Russians opposed to the war in Ukraine who are starting new lives in Kazakhstan.

I am not 100% sure what he did to be honest I know he joined the army in latvia, he was captured on the front in France, he was dragging his best friend to surrender who was shot in his leg and he lost that leg they both became pow serving time in coal mine by sherwood forest , grampa always told me war time was something to be scared of and peace time was so sweet , I never really understood that. During the course of the Russian invasion into Ukraine, I have listened to many debates with historians and military experts. I am convinced that even if the Ukrainian Army defeats Putin, will that be the end of the war? Unless there is closure, Putin could build up a new army and attack Ukraine again in a year, or later. The only way to stop the war for the foreseeable future, is for the Russian people to rid themselves of the poisonous rhetoric and propaganda Putin has instilled into their brains, overthrow the totalitarian regime and rebuild their country for the people of Russia, not for the Oligarchs and Putin’s inner circle.

It will never happen, the citizens of this criminal and terrorist country most likely have it in their genes 🧬 to continue on this path. They have been like this in the past hundred years, are now destroying their neighbours and will always be like this, unless this cancer ♋️ is wiped off the planet 🌎

These people have finally learned the "social contract" was not with the ordinary people of Russia.
The ordinary people have always been the currency, the payment - in the contract between the Kremlin, the oligarchs and the church; where they are allowed to become fat off exploiting the people, as long as they made the people do what the Kremlin wanted.
Do these people care about those who were not able to flee? Who were too poor, because of these people's privilege, these people who benefitted from Putin's reign, who never spoke out against oppression and corruption until it affected them? Did they care about Chechnya, Georgia, Afghanistan? They knew what Putin was like.
I was sympathetic to start, but then I remember there is a lot of "soft" pro-Russian/Putin/totalitarian programmes being put out by Al Jazeera. And I remember the coverage of widespread russian chauvinism and betrayal of the countries that took them in.
While news which should be told, I think this is a part of that soft pro-russian agenda. I hope those people take their privilege back and give it back to the country that gave it to them at the expense of the poor - to sorting out the rats nest rather than consuming the freedoms which they have not worked for, the hard work of others..
