I've been picking my brain on how to cut the top off of these and it never dawned on me to use a circular saw. HA genius idea! I also didn't realize you could flip it upside down and make it fit. Thanks so much for the info.

    Great tip.
I had never thought of cutting the lid off, and flipping it to use as a lid again, you added so many more uses for the blue barrels.

Perfect timing! I'll be working from home tomorrow and part of my chores list was cutting the top off a blue barrel. I got mine from a local microbrewery.
The tarp tip is a good one to remember. These little tips are a great idea!

I knew it would be simple but didn't want to miss the opportunity to still have a lid after cutting. You guys always come through.

Years ago I would make trips each Monday to a auction with pigs, goats, and sheep and about 2 miles away was a pickle factory where I would load about 80 of those barrels and bring them to Maine to resell. Here in this area what I used to sell for $11.00 are now $30-$50 and I have seen some for over $100. If only I had known. Thanks for sharing my friend. Many blessings.

flipping the lid... genius ;) You can trim the edges with a knife or chisel, or even run a torch around that rough lip - just other options ;)

So glad I found this. I was trying to figure out how I would cover one that I'm using for hydroponic solution. This is perfect! Thank you! And a tip: get a deburring tool: one quick swipe takes off all the shavings and leaves a nice smooth rounded edge.

WOW Jason. I just got two of these and I didn't know what to do. I thought I could use a heat gun to loosen the lid but wasn't looking forward to it. Your tip is a perfect and quicker solution. You've got no idea how much I love this tip Jason. Thank you so much. I really appreciate all your videos, tips and inspiration.❣️😘👍 Big hello to the three of you and Bernice😆

Absolutely EXCELLENT. Just what I'm looking to do. I've finally realized that leaving grass clippings on the lawn doesn't feed the grass cause it takes years for those clippings to decompose. All those clippings just form thatch and prevent the lawn from breathing and getting rain properly. So, what do I do with the clippings? Too much trouble to start a compost pile. A lot easier to use my annual pass and drop of such yard waste at our local recycling center. So, I can put a 60 gallon plastic bag in a barrel and fill it up with clippings. If I get two, three or four barrels then I wouldn't have to make a run to the recycling center so often. I'm happy to see that the lid can still be used so I can keep rain out of the barrel. Thanks for posting your video. I wonder how heavy a 60 gallon bag of grass clippings is?

We put a spigot near the bottom on ours....didn’t ‘t cut the top off, but removed the 2 plastic tops......set it on concrete bricks...filled it with water....put a water bowl under it...and use it for water for the chickens while in the coop....

How did you get the spigot on the bottom without removing the top? I wanted to add a spigot to mine but need to remove the top to reach all the way down to the bottom to thread on the spigot or some pipes to connect multiple tanks together.

I tried to do this today with my brand spanking new mini circular saw but the saw kept jumping. My first time to ever use an electric saw. It comes with 3 blades:wood, wood/metal and tiles/backerboard/cement. I was using the one for wood. I have the same exact blue barrels that you have. Please tell me what I was doing wrong. Another way to go is to use an angle grinder and/or cutting wheel tool.... will cut the top off and "sand"/grind off those craggly edges as well. Works just as well as a circular/skill saw.... just a matter of what tool(s) ya have handy. Hope somebody finds this useful. ;-)

It's way better to cut it from the top like open a cane rather than cut from the side.
The barrel will become squashy in the long term without its core ring structure removed.
I use a jigsaw to cut from the top. Then putting cringe on it. Much better.
