Note to all: The blue plastic barrels are made from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and can be recycled indefinitely. Even when they have been used on the allotment for years they can be fully recycled. Top video Terry.
Its getting companies to take them Andy, even our waste disposal centres have stopped sorting it into a separate skip, seems such a shame and hopefully in years to come as you have said they will be turned into something new, many thanks and I will pin your comment.

Well thats even better to know. Thankyou.
You are obviously practiced at this. Great examples of how to do this.
I have had 50 barrels experience my friend and they are a great addition to my growing spaces.

Nice to be able to get them for free. Reuse is better than landfill. 👍👍 Best wishes Bob.
Very true Bob and to think that I have stopped nearly 50 going to landfill is an achievement.

Glad I could help! and for the comment i really appreciate it.

This Video helps with the cutting Terry, so that the lid will slip inside the barrel thanks for sharing the info, cheers Alan
Cheers Alan, all you need to do now is adapt the cutting to allow the Syphoning pipes to fit.

I was able to get one of these barrels but it was used at a sausage factory etc so had had salt water in it to preserve the sausage casings. I rinsed it all out and now using it as part of my water butt setup. Thanks for the ideas much appreciated cheers 🍻
Cheers Jacko, very difficult to get hold of so anything is better than nothing and its nice to know what has been in the containers before we get them.

I love this, what’s also good is that you can clean the barrel if algae grows in it. Those containers have endless uses.
I have so many and will still get them while I can.

Hi Terry, thanks for sharing this, I have just done the lid part of this to two of these barrels but haven't done taps yet so your video is really helpful. Thanks for sharing :-)

Recycling plastic like that is a lot better than chucking them in a skip. I’m not one of these that thinks all plastic is evil. It’s incredibly useful, especially the salvaged stuff like this.
Definitely Heather and I have a few finds and bags of recycling that I can use and give away on Sundays episode.

Excellent Terry. I worked in Waste haul and Recycling. I've seen literally thousands of these and never gave it any thought. Good to see people making use out of them.
I would only add, you know what material was in them originally. If people don't they should take precautions, especially if there's any liquid in them. Should unscrew the white cap (can be done screwdriver) and carefully inspected. If there's more than a "just residue" and you don't know what the liquid is, I'd recommend not touching it. Many different petroleum and chemical products are stored in them.
Cheers Terry and stay safe !!
The barrels had Addblue in them so not an issue for me.

Hello Terry
pff a different method than mine. Have to make holes in the lid. That is a good idea as well. Is mrs King sweeping the pavement right now? I used a tarp to collect the filings.

Mrs K does go mad at me if I don't clean up properly because it gets on your shoes and then into the Mars in the car and yes I normally put something down, but was late getting home and needed this job out of the way and probably why I selected the wrong drill bit.

They have barrels like that at our car wash shop. They are clear. They let me have two but they kept car washing liquid in them. The barrels had stickers that said contains chemicals. I decided not to use the barrels.😒 I didn’t want to take any chances. Thanks for sharing this info. I hope to use it 😊🌱
I found the clear ones let the rain water go green, but a great way to store water and yes we have to be careful what has been in them.

Nice video. Any advice on what to do if you don't have a lid? I was thinking of putting a wire mesh on top of a couple of barrels to keep the insects, etc out.
Keeping the light out is priority, but Keeping living creatures out is equally important so a flat lid from metal, wood or plastic will help Andrew.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Good barrels mate here they cost 70 franks if you buy them. the ones with lids though. I got mine free ;-)
Its being in the right place at the right time and I was only talking about opening up my shed to store my finds and my brother rang me to ask a question and mentioned he was replacing his roof so jumped in for the sheets so the shed may get priority to the polytunnel this fall. The right time always seem to come to me with the materials needed.

Boom. I wish I could find a few of those barrels locally, they'd help me and a neighbour out no end. What was in them again and what industry uses them Terry?
Well done Frank.

They had addblue in them, the liquid you have to add to lorries and some vehicles to make them environmentally friendly. For some reason we have the barrels when most have the IBC's which are returnable.

A good tutorial Terry. Do you ever get low on water? I realize that there has been lots of rain recently, but come the height of summer do your stocks run low? 🍺
Hello William, this year a dry start and started to panic so built more roof space on the manure run off and the Compost Bins, then its rained regularly since then so I still have 95% , last year was wet all season and never fell below 99%, 2018 dry without rain and at the end of the watering season I had 200ltrs left and I must have brought to plot 1 over 1500ltrs to keep my new fruit trees and bushes well watered. Personally I need 15,000ltrs to last.

Absolutely nothing wrong wit re-using plastic items. Doing it with objects that large is a real environmental plus. My only misery-guts moan is, can you pick up the plastic swarf and put it in a recycling bin? Might not do any good, but that Blue Planet stuff about miroplastics gives me the willies. That's minor compared to the good you're doing with the upcycling of the barrels. Bravo!
We generate a lot of hard plastic which is not widely recycled, we had a company who would leave a skip just for hard plastic but that only lasted 2 years. Keeping this type of repurpose out of landfill is my aim even if I give them to my fellow plot holders Steve. Unfortunately the swarf had to go into the general waste, such a shame that we can go into space but can't find away to recycle plastic.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
Great how to. How many barrels did you go through before you finalised the method?
Putting the nut on the tap - this is where you need the small child, not the worm farm. They could crawl in there easily.
I have done about 50 Jason so it was time to share, now that reminds me to get my granddaughter out of the barrel......lol.

I just found a unibit in a complete snap-on tool box that was left by the curb. The things people throw away. Must have been some poor fellow who succumbed to the delta floating around. It was packed with 16 pair of channel lock brand pliers. 200 Allen wrench with the handle. 45 different grade Nicholson file 176 open end wrench a tool pouch with all mandatory Klein tools for electrical work. A craftsman drill brand new and a car buffer. To many drill bits to count. Funny enough not one single socket or socket wrench. I’d say it was worth lugging it onto the truck
I have found many useful things by the kerb and you hit the jackpot, some people would rather we have them than to throw away.

Great video Terry!
Here's a question. I've got 7 of these lined up outside my allotment polytunnel. I've fitted standard guttering to the tubular frame on each side of the tunnel, which fills the tubs each end. The plan is to join all of the tubs together at the bottom so that they all fill at the same time. For this to work without clogging up, I need to use fairly hefty pipe - maybe 1 1/2" BSP. But because of the curve of the tubs, I'm struggling to get that size a tank connector to form a good seal. Latest thought is to heat the drilled wall of the blue tub first before tightening the tank connector but I haven't tried it yet.
Any ideas ?
Use the Syphoning system Andy like I do, no fittings just an old hose pipe and some wire. Search on Google Joining barrels using the Syphoning system or How to join rain water barrels together using a pipe Syphoning system kink free.

Long time, Q: What blade did you use in the Jigsaw for cutting the plastic?
P.S, nice vid😀👍
The teeth need to be reasonably big similar to a wood saw so metal cutting wouldn't be overly suitable.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening And what about melting?
@@jack1d1XB much easier to cut than melt.
Why did you had to make hole on top, didn’t the white tops couldn’t open to collect water.
I don't normally do the lids this way, but yes you could just remove the tops, I personally don't like too much light getting to the water so it doesn't go green so 5he smaller the hole the better.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
I watched to see how the inner nut was fixed on in a deep barrel but it was not shown. The video did not show, using silicone or tape you still have to lean in a depth longer than your arm
I can just reach to tighten the nut and easier with two, no silicon or tape used, no need as long as you don't over tighten Lee.
♻️Happy gardening, Terry King.
@@terrykingsallotmentgardening If you got two hands in to do the job you'd still have your feet in the air !.'ll take your word that you did put the nut on with one hand and not just rely on silicone on the outside.
@Lee Jones I have used mole grips before on the inside and turned the tap to tighten, don't use silicon no more the rubber washer is sufficient.
