The point about most top pro boxers also being top amateurs is exactly why the stalling of amateur bouts for nearly a year now in the U.K is such a huge problem. We're missing out on an entire generation of potential pros really. I havent boxed in just under a year now
Agreed mate. I think it could be even worse in that young seniors may turn over sooner than they should ordinarily do, just to have some chance to get back in the ring. Keep the faith pal. Fingers crossed we can at least get you back sparring mid to late summer🤞
Fran, Another excellent video. I really enjoy your channel bud. Your line of thinking really reflects my own and you often raise points that I feel are very interesting
Love this video Fran, always wondered on this point as well. Thanks for clarifying. It is interesting as you nearly always see a good amateur will find it easier in the pros - most of the time. I guess that comes from fighting so many different styles and the ability to work out what your opponent is doing. This video got me thinking about the Prizefighter series on Sky, they stopped it but it was fighting multiple times per night in a tournament format - 3 x 3 rounds. Saw some really good fighters lose that as they couldn't get going quick enough. Hope you are doing well mate, Thanks for the vid
Hello Chris, long time, I hope that all is well with you mate. Yes, it was interesting the prizefighter series - and you're exactly right, the short format was a big challenge in terms of spinning up to operating speed.
@@myboxingcoach All good here - what a year though! Hopefully things are getting back to normal now at last... Still training - although just been doing sets on the bag mixed with burpees and kettlebell. Thanks for all your content Fran, going to get back into it properly and might well take you up on the one on one training in the next few months - would be good to really perfect technique etc... Cheers mate,
Bang on there Fran. The WSB helps the elite amateurs with the transition to pro boxing immensely. However like you said if you haven't got that punch to stop someone from marauding forward your silky skills that got you out of trouble in the amateur code will not be enough to get you through a pro 10-12 rounder. As seen with Kelly v Avanesyan.
Yes Jimmy, WSB is a great transition aid, really good point. As for Kelly, yes, Avaneysan just marched straight on through. You've got to at least gain their respect, have some level of deterrent. I thought it was interesting to see Adam Booth telling him (arounf the 5th I think it was) to push Avanesyan back. I wondered whether he was getting a bit desperate at that point, big ask!
Very cool coach!A lot of my training was under the Fullmer Brothers; Gene; Don & Jay.. Highlight was being on the set of Touched by an Angel for 2 days with Muhammad Ali.Have trained in MMA a bit to but Love boxing.Made a few little videos on Joe Holland u-tube channel for fun.I appreciate very deeply coaches like you.Thank You
Great video Fran. I remember walking into a pro/am gym and being slightly surprised by the coaching- which seemed to be place much more weight towards hurting your opponent as opposed to simply scoring shots. Could you expand on the specific tactics that professionals use that amateurs are less likely to use? Are unconventional stances, guards, defenses and punches more likely to be used? I also remember watching callum beardow's second pro fight where the commentator mentioned beardow being too eager to impress the crowd. Meanwhile his coach's advice often seemed to be quite simple and grounded in basic amateur theory telling him to double up on shots, jab to the body, etc.* Do you think it's difficult for coaches to make the transition as well to pro fights?Out of pure curiosity, are there any resources you would recommend for reading up on the transition to the pro-ranks Also, how does amateur boxing differ in other parts of the world? Are boxers from certain nations more likely to utilize footwork defenses compared to hand defenses and body movement? What about switching to southpaw or volume punching? *I mean no disrespect towards the coach- he's coached me before and he's absolutely excellent.
Thanks Sam. Quite a few interesting questions there, and I'll put some thought into how I might do a further video on the key tactical differences and the progression itself as well as the global variations in styles. On the coach development question, nothing I know of in respect of reading, but again I'll put some thought into how it might work 👍
Very interesting! The mental toughness these young men and women have to develop on the way to their goals is extra amazing, given it's on top of their necessary and intense daily self-discipline for years. Very impressive athleticism imnsho. Based on your videos, I'm sure your fighters get a very solid education. Thank you for your time and your book just landed on my library list, thanks. 🙋🏼
bruh. you ask for advice when you know your mistake. Discipline is the main thing. just be disciplined. since you are 28 you already know how to be disciplined but you are just lazy.
What matters to me is I've heard amateurs have age divisions. I've screwed up my prime from internal bs, and now I'm too old for the pros. 40 now. Though in my 20s I trained 5 days a week a few hours a day at a local center for 3.5 years including a lot of sparring experience. I have tons of regret and want to if I can "come back." Now being homeless I NEED that extra money! The amateurs don't pay you, but they do have age divisions. But I do know the unpracticability of the pros at my age. Any thoughts???
hello fran i was just working on your video called retreat to attack and as a beginner to boxing those footwork changes were a little complicated. is there a way you can show us 1 time the footwork giving us your back so its easier to understand the angles. thanks for everything
Coincidence. A pal asked me a while ago on it, but yes, Josh Kelly is going through the same proces. I felt he should have gone with 'aggressive retreat', trying to push Avanesyan back was always going to be difficult.
@@myboxingcoach Cheers. Maybe nearer the time you can do a preview on Saunders/Canelo. I don;t see how Saunders can win, but maybe I'm missing something.
@@phillewis3108 I don;t disagree but there are people who seem to think Saunders is going to produce some amazing performance to bamboozle him. I can't see anything in his history to show he can, but I'd be interested to see if anyone else can.
Hi, can someone help me? I have dylema cuz my coach in the boxing club teaches the crosspunching while moving backwards what means than i move right leg while punch with left leg then move left leg and punch with right hand. This occurs only when moving backwards but i didnt see anything about that on yt. Is this correct? Anyone saw something like that before?
3:22 why you always says you have to be on the ball of feet ????? Thats very big mistake I respect you so much And learned all the skills that you teach and I really appreciate that but you have to be on your heels flat footed you have to be relaxed you don't want to do calf exercise in the fight thats wrong you can look at a the all great fighters in the world no one of them was on the ball of the feet please study this again and give me your answer I reay respect and love what you doing ❤❤
Every knowledgeable coach and professionals boxer recommends being on the balls of your feet. I’d trust their advice over the random guy on UA-cam comments who thinks you should stand flat. Have you considered that you might be mistaken? Standing on the balls of your feet is well known advice and used by professionals far more qualified than you

why on earth would anybody want to spend so much time of their day hitting other people in the head, what a silly thing to do. they should get a real job and be useful member of the society.
oh I can explain that: Not everyone ticks the same, and for certain types of persons combat sports are the perfect way to channel anger, work on discipline and provide a sense of accomplishment and pride thereby making them functioning, useful members of society. Now I suspect your comment is a 1/10 troll attempt or perhaps you're just a selfabsorbed pussy, I don't know, one of two, possibly both, but it's your own assumption people spend "much time of their day hitting other people in the head", which shows you're ignorant about this topic. now here's my question: why on earth would you watch this video when you have such a negative image of boxing?
Combat sports helps develops the confidence, belief and skills for people who grew up in a tough upbringing, to be able to go and do other stuff later on Be a little more open-minded! And instead of being a hypocrite, why don't you go and become a useful member in society rather than commenting on UA-cam, as that's not useful to society one-bit, especially your narrow-minded views.
