Imagine sitting in your hammock, relaxing or reading just enjoying nature.. then this sound breaks the silence coming from across the lake "WOOOOOO BUDDDDY!!" Shug is my spirit animal!
Shug, i've gotta tell ya...I’ve been watching your channel for about 12 years now and I never miss one of your backpacking videos. I love them. But this series of videos brought me a whole new level of enjoyment to your videos. What a fun change of pace to see you kind of try something new (Canoeing the BWCA alone). I enjoyed every second of it! I’ve got to admit, I was really hoping we got to see you catch a Northern or a Bass on that little rod. Oh how fun that would have been! And I also kept waiting for you to see a moose grazing in the rice, but thats the beauty of it, all of those things get to be saved for the next time!! Woooo buddy!! I do hope you continue canoeing the BWCA, Shug, this was fun and I could tell you enjoyed it too!! -Gavin
Thank you, Shug, for all your hard work in filming-carrying and putting down your load to change different camera angles, rowing away and coming back to pick up your camera, etc. Made your video more cinematic.😁
I came here to say the same thing. Some of those shots were amazing! Thanks for putting in the extra effort. These shots (and your humor!) reslly made the video.
Your adventures are so enjoyable. From the subtle cultural references of Hogan’s Heroes (I know nothing) to Greek mythology (siren’s song) to the Shugery hijinks and spontaneous songs, nothing compares to the Great Shug. Awesome trip. I’m looking forward to the 10-day version. By the way, catching a video of lake turtles making a nest and laying eggs was epic. Great timing. See you next time. Ciao.
I’ve been watching your channel for years and I’ve always enjoyed your content. Your energy was always up, you were funny and shared your considerable talents with us. But these last two videos have struck me as different, and in a way that I’ve enjoyed to the max. Still funny, great content and information but the slow pace and contemplative nature of these last two videos has me all choked up. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Hey Shug eating on a canoe trip is different for everyone - our favourite is planning a leisurely , late breakfast, and early dinner with snacks whenever you feel like throughout the day or around the fire. Group trip dynamics are different of course or if you are trying to go for miles, which I (we) rarely do. Lots of folks do their own dehydrating, some stick with freeze dried , oh man I'm enjoying and hope to continue enjoy watching you discover all the canoe-y goodness...!!!
And don't forget our traditional "WHOOOO BUDDY!" as call and response approaching a group camp site by canoe. If you hear it hollered back from shore, you've found your people.
Shug, turtle speak is very, very soft, and one must listen very carefully. They came out to thank you for caring so much about their beautiful home and to wish you farewell. They want you to come back soon to stay a little longer. Those gals knew they were safe and could leave their eggs at your camp. How precious was that moment! God bless and keep you, friend.
Hey Shug! Great to see you soloing...we were in the Gunflint section the week prior to your trip. Our small group of guys were holding out a little hope that we might run into you in Grand Marais. Would've bought you a fish sandwich at the Angry Trout! Love your videos man...keep em coming!

Very impressive maiden voyage Shug! You’re prep time showed and sooo agree with your shout out to Bill Mason. He loved the woods, water and figured out what the Aboriginals did years ago that the canoe was the best option for woods travel in North America! Here’s to you staying fit and healthy for many more years of hiking and/or canoe tripping! Oh, and double carrying is more time consuming but so much safer and gives you time to stretch and enjoy the hike vs straining under a heavy load…
5 nighter solo for your first trip?! Well done! Another great Canadian paddle vid is Bill Manson "Path of the Paddle". It's old, but I learned a lot from it. Loved the video as always, it's inspiring to see how much enjoyment you get from being out there.

Canoe is a great way to travel. You can really appreciate the design of the craft. If you can find it I’d recommend reading “Canoeing with the Cree” by Eric Sevareid (the TV reporter). After high school in the thirties he and a buddy canoed from Minneapolis up the Mississippi to the Red River of the north and on to Hudson Bay. In Canada the canoe was still used by the natives. A great story,

2009, solo trip out of Sawbill Outfitters in my touring kayak. Portaging required a little more planning, but the whitecaps washed over the deck and skirt and the rudder kept me straight and true. Absoltely loved the solitude. I had a cow moose leap out and away from me out of the marsh next to me. Couldn't see her from the low cockpit until she lept. Almost stepped in a pile of wolf poo in the middle of a 300+ portage. Made me realize what alone in the woods means. Had a grouse crash through the brush as I lugged my kayak along the same portage. Thought for sure a moose was going step on me until I saw the grouse in my path flapping and making all kinds of racket. All great moments. Had to wash out my underwear often, but still great memories! ;-)

I have to say, this is some great stuff! My brother and I took a slightly different route, but we spent some time on Winchell and Gaskin during our second annual brotherly BWCA canoe trip a couple years ago. It's wonderful to see some familiar sights (we might've even stayed at the same site on Gaskin, but it's difficult to tell for sure). I hope you continue doing canoe trips. It's a ton of fun to watch, and I think a great addition to your already fun content.
Awesome, thanks Shug! I’m a hiker too (thru hiked the SHT), hiked parts of the Pow Wow a few times, but haven’t been canoeing the BWCA for decades. I do have a solo canoe that wants to go, so thanks for the inspiration. 🙂

Gaskin site was top notch. Can't wait to go again.
Livin the loligag dream out there!! I am also a big fan of Packit Gourmet. I need to try the gumbo and tortilla soup.
So excited for this second part!!
Thanks great job I enjoyed your video. Cheers 👍🇨🇦
As I sit watching your video Shug in the blistering heat & humidity of So Cal
, what I wouldn't give to be surrounded by refreshing cool lakes!
It makes my heart glad that you enjoyed your canoe trip. I hope we get to see more canoe trips in the BWCA from you in the future!
Awesome, thanks Shug! I’m a hiker too (thru hiked the SHT), hiked parts of the Pow Wow a few times, but haven’t been canoeing the BWCA for decades. I do have a solo canoe that wants to go, so thanks for the inspiration. 🙂
Yessir. Did the Pow Wow way back before the burn and even hammocks. Reckon it is coming back...slowly.
@@shugemery It came back thiiicck with Jackpine everywhere. Folks did a good job of clearing this year, south side trail is now passable. Still looks kinda like a moonscape and Trail is dry.
Shug, glad you made it for the solo canoe trip liked you mentioned on Eagle Mountain. Only you talked about canoers having eggs and pancakes cooked on cast iron, it appears you left the eggs and cast iron off the video record. Hat off to you fine sir - looked like you enjoyed the trip, may the wind always be at your back.
I am not toting cast ion on a solo!
@@shugemery hickory would've had his pie makers.
@@chestergartin5349 And I would have reaped the benefits!
Shug, you've been making videos now for over a decade. Whooo Buddy! Keep it up guy.
Since 2007!
Just fantastic… I’ve been there, but back starting in 1958 to the 1969. Awesome fishing back then as stocking was implemented on many lakes. You need a long Buch tail Spinner bate 4”+ for Pike .
Can’t wait to share old slides I have from those great times. Terry&ThePirates South Florida
Lollygag = chill ?

Wow, what a great trip - beautiful scenery! Thanks for taking us along!
Thanks for posting Shug ! ! !
You bet
Cool video, enjoyed following along on your adventures. I like that you show plenty of footage of your camp setups. That stuff is the most interesting to me, where you camp, what to eat and drink, etc.
That is what I like to see on others videos. Thankee.
Hey howdy hey! Thank you! That was amazing.
Whooooo Buddy))))
This was a nice peaceful 5 day Shug canoe trip. 😀 Awesome campsites! 👍
Sure was!!!
...then one day he stays in the woods! Looks like fun ...thx for sharing
Naw...I would have to come out to watch Formula 1 races~~~
The first peek at shug was in a pair of birch bark sunglasses. As i was just winding down from the bw, watching canoe trips. Its been great now i have added backpacking to my out door pursuits thanks shug!!
"A totally different way to see the woods." That kinda sums it up. Beautiful footage, Shug.
Well I'm looking forward to being the age where you stop for a cheese break :P
Really glad you finally managed make a start on your canoe dreams - I'm still in the process of thinking 'should I / shouldn't I?'
Keep in touch!
Cheese break is ageless~~~~~~~~
WOW. I am starting to see why you love that area so much. It is absolutely beautiful country. Amazing. And,in answer to your question of 'how long do ya keep doin' this' [backpacking/hiking/enjoying the woods etc]...My answer is...forever man! Heck I'm turning 71 and just gettin started!
It is amazing up there. Nice to have it 5 hours away!
