I’m voting for a Shug-Hickory canoe trip in the BWCA. As an aside, your shout outs were very classy and I expect most appreciated. I really enjoy these videos as a 63 year old retired guy. Keep ‘er movin’.

I find I talk to myself more now that I'm over 60 then before. I figured it out. I'm talking to the most intelligent person I know. I agree with me on most everything. Sure we argue once in a while but not much, AND definitely NOT in public.

I'm getting all emotional after seeing good, old Shug of the piney woods finally grab a paddle and head out on a solo canoe trip. Watching him glide effortlessly across the BWCA does my old heart good. Keep the open side up and maybe you'll be up for a trip to Ontario's piney woods one day!

Lordy, Lordy, Lordy! Shug in a canoe. I gotta say, for a first time solo trip, you made some good decisions. Cold and rainy...stay another day. Windy? Angle the canoe at a 45 degree angle. Got a canoe? Bring a little extra. Portage your own shortage. I hope to see more trips in the future!

I think I heard you say portage the Canadian way...you've been watching too many paddlers up north! Very touched to be mentioned there---thanks a million Shug. Chilly start, not so fun for wet feet (or the nether regions for that matter), but it only makes that steamy espresso taste better. Love watching you soak up the joy of the canoe trip. Looked like a really nice boat to solo and that little pocket fisherman was a riot. Few things could enhance living more than a loving partner 💚

Great to see the ol' ultra lightweight back packer out on the canoe Shug. The reason you watch so many Canadian channels with canoeing is because of how much water and wilderness we have up here! Was told years ago, "It's Ok to talk to yourself, as long as you don't answer" lol.

Shug congrats on 36 years! It’s great feeling knowing that we have someone that loves us for who we are, the good the bad and the ugly. lol My wife and I celebrate our 40th this June. We love kayaking and fishing together but it’s getting harder to get it in and out of the yaks. We laugh at each other getting and out. Between Charlie horses and legs not moving very well. She told me the other day when went fishing and trying to get out of the yak, we might not be able to do this one of these days. We love being out in nature. We’re glad we’ve past this love to our kids and grandchildren. I enjoy watching you on your outings. God Bless you and your family…

I found myself smiling through most of your video, happy to see you enjoying the BWCA in a canoe. I was glad to see you joyful despite the rain; I've told many people, a day of rain in the BWCA is more beautiful than just about any place on earth in the sunshine. I'm thinking your fishing would be more productive out on the water rather than from the shore. Your videos always bring me joy. This one did not disappoint. Next time, if you're going to take those monster portages, spring for a Kevlar rental! You'll shave about 20 to 25 pounds off your burden. Once I went Kevlar, I've never gone back.

After thousands of miles of backpacking, I took my first trip to BWCA a couple of years ago and truly fell in love with the place. I approached my trip the same way. I carried extra weight, did double carries on portages and carefully picked my campsites. My loop out of Snowbank Lake out to Knife Lake and around was magical and I fell in love with that wilderness. I could tell you felt the same by the constant smile on your face. Good stuff.

Soggy feet: Yes, part of canoeing! We always used special water shoes (old sneakers!) for canoeing. You can change into better footwear for the portages, if needed...as you noted, you're canoe camping, not backpacking! My family vacations growing up were canoe camping in the Adirondacks. I love your video updating us on your first canoe trip!

Shug, I laughed out loud at your pitch-perfect Baird invitation-because, I, too, consumed his compelling videos during the pandemic.I’m on the verge on tackling some NC river canoe camping, and you may have inspired me just to jump in and do it. Mighty Muddy Yadkin, here I come! Also laughed at your self-dialogue comment; I do that, too. Figure ya gotta take advantage of good conversation, wherever it’s found! 😜 thanks for bringing us along. Can’t wait for the next mini-backpacking/canoeing lollygag installment!

Congrats on doing your first solo canoe trip... and, welcome to my world. I've completed 75 BW canoe trips since '92... probably about 1/2 of them solo. Last year, my route (10 day trip) included Vista Lake. Unfortunately, I had to take the Northwest campsite since the other 2 were occupied. I sure would have loved to have that site you did. Looking forward to the rest of your journey. Thanks for taking us along.

Pitching your tarp with a paddle and feasting on lots of good food; you definitely had the pioneer vibe ringing! Gotta love those meditative paddle swirls when the water is calm. Very happy for you Shug; all the best. Peace

This is some great stuff...I watched all 43 minutes while lying in my backyard hammock. Every so often I would close my eyes and imagine I was hanging there with Shug. :-)
Hey Shugg, I've got an idea for a future video. Come late October you and Hickory should stay at that creepy campsite, the one you said the devil must have stayed at, and film a Halloween hammock hanging special.
