I've been battling my 1982 470 for 18 months...#3 rings rusted in cyl(sat for 3 years while on govt issued unpaid work assignment...don't mess w/TX 4 real) finally pulled head and soaked the cyls for a month in blaster, shaped a landscape timber to match top of piston and broke it loose w/ a fence post hammer...gently as a 20 lb hammer allows. Turns over good by hand but stuck with rusted starter issue as well. I got same water intrusion, exhaust flap missing, rotted wires and icing on the cake: pack of field rats decided to move in while gone. It was a very messy eviction when they met the landlord...work in progress as yours is but you are the first person to tackle everything head on and document it spot on. Congrats. My saving grace is that it was skipping across lake Degray at 50mph before my exodus, seized in storage and noones touched it but me. She will awaken soon...just like karma. Its worth the work the torque and power are amazing, you'll see.
Thanks for your comment. If something is left out for a long period of time it doesn’t do it any favours. My boat was abandoned in the back of a yard around 2008.
Do you have any concerns about a 4bbl carb delivering to much power to a freshened motor. Quadrajets deliver great economy in 2bbl mode and smoth power increase when needed. Great boat carbs with their center bowl/center float design. Fiddly carbs but worth it.
I’m not to worried about the power. My nearest body of water is the river Avon which has a 4mph speed limit. I’m expecting it to mainly be using the primary barrels.
