Every time I hear Richter play a piece, I hear so much more in the music than any other pianist playing the same piece. He makes every note meaningful, in a way no other pianist I've listened to does.
Apart to Arrau the best Debussy interpreter ever. Richter´s sense and understanding of this unique harmonic is uncomparable. He creates 1000 worlds between 5th, chromatics and atonality. That makes Debuissy such a great and contemporary composer!
He is not at his best here. I heard him live in the early 80s in France, playing a fantastic Haydn and Debussy recital. The absolute standard for Debussy( Images and Preludes) is still Michelangeli and Gieseking.
This is a universal, all-encompassing movement! We know he also has variants with a more mobile Movement. I listened these pieces in his live concert on 02/12/1972.

Movement?….hardly. Love his playing, but Debussy was quite clear on dynamics. Very heavy handed here. VERY.

There is nothing for him to do in this company! He does not play dead music like for example Michelangeli. Think in terms of stamps.
