"I know only how to reflect: I am a mirror ... Logic does not exist for me. I float on the waves of art and life and never really know how to distinguish what belongs to the one or the other or what is common to both. Life unfolds for me like a theatre presenting a sequence of somewhat unreal sentiments; while the things of art are real to me and go straight to my heart."
Richter at the height of his powers, with all the intensity of his youth still present (though I love the relative relaxation of his later years well enough). His mirror is indeed of such a high sheen it's as if Mozart himself was playing, for surely the greatest prodigy in the history of art, the truest Peter Pan who ever lived, would have played a modern Steinway, accompanied by a modern orchestra, with a force very much like this.

Finalmente un commento condivisibile. Interpreti fantastici certo

With regard to the comment from Klaus Peter below, I can only think that as Richter entered the Mozart house so easily he had no need for a key. He has an uncanny ability to inhabit the world of each composer as if he is a specialist in that field. I particularly enjoy the robust richness of his Mozart - it reminds me a little of Furtwangler's approach to Don Giovanni - a very long way from the procelain figurine image with which we are often confronted. Maazel is also wonderfully alert and responsive.

@@mckavitt13 Your opinion was shared by the late great Nikolaus Harnoncourt, whose command of Mozartean rhetoric was absolute. Harnoncourt considered that Mozart was the first of the truly Romantic composers, and that this quality can be detected as early as the opera Idomeneo, with Ilia's aria Se il padre perdei. Incidentally, I also share your opinion.

Jason Hurd This Romanticism is easily heard leading up to the cadential points of the opening movements in most of his concertos, the melodies (and harmonies) in the these sections are usually gorgeous, stopping on the 2nd inversion of the tonic chord for that necessary anticipation of the keyboard instrument to do its thing.

Fascinating performance; unaffected by the original instruments' movement that was just burgeoning at the time. Never heard the first movement at such a slow tempo! I would never rate this among the best, (Maazel was never a favorite interpreter of mine) but it is always interesting to hear new approaches, no matter how wrong-headed in the end we may think they are. Richter, of course, is one of the piano Gods...

The sheer quantity of excellent music Mozart created in his short life is nothing short of miraculous. Did he ever eat or sleep? And he wrote it out himself with a quill pen! It’s simply staggering.

This concerto lasts 30 minutes or more - to think Mozart composed this when most piano concertos lasted 12 minutes.
