Great artists, great Programme with an inner connection. And mostly contemporary and revolutionary music at that time. I'm not positive if nowadays someone has the courage to offer such a demanding programme to the audience. What a great heritage we can listen to here. Thank you for uploading this!
Music making on a transcendental level, the perfect dialogue between these two legendary artists brought such profound joy and meaning to audiences. Thank you so much for this wonderful post.
My all-time favourite recording of the Brahms second sonata. Every little nuance in particularly of the second movement is integrated with my being. I remember being shocked some years ago when I learned the performance was filmed too. That first *view* was like a miracle with a paradox ... How can they act so casual and yet produce this wonder, I felt. To anyone new to this recording: The sound quality is much better on records, it seems Melodiya had a separate feed or that the film soundtrack is of lesser quality (but both easily recognized as the identical performance). Fascinating to learn about the presence of DSCH himself! And to know that he heard the same performances.
Yes, just saw two splendid documentaries about these legendary musicians (by Bruno Monsaingeon, made around the year 2000 but re-aired on Mezzo) the week before Christmas - and can't wait to get the time to watch this! ♥
Richter was a very "personal person" ..; sometimes uncredibly courageous and possessed (Prokoviev), or able to break the borders of possible understanding of the music he played (Schubert), sometimes so precautious, quite shy or neutral .... like a virgin. But Oistrakh was always "perfect", not transcendental, not under the fire of inspiration, but the best servant of the music. He makes me think to Karl Böhm, who conducted always "exactly". (il dirigeait "juste") Here, as a result, no surprise, but "perfect music".
@@diegeigergarnele7975 Thanks. In particuler, Bartok's sonata is typivcal of both his general style and sometimes his stylstic or writing hesitations. As such, I find it DOUBLY human.
@@gerardbegni2806 absolutely, many modern players forgot that Bartok is incredibly human. You just need to hear him play his music to understand how the dissonance was only felt by him as a way to express, not as some fancy theorical approach. Too bad nowadays we get a lot of percussive and rythmic performances, and the soul of Bartok gets often misunderstood for some kind of extravagant avant garde. I also enjoy Kremer playing of Bartok and nowadays I think Hadelich does justice to him as well.
@@diegeigergarnele7975 There is another quite attractive side of Batok. He was probably the most engaged "anifascist" composer in Europe. Yet he was himself prosecurted by the fascist regime of Regent Hörthy, who joined the hitlerian camp. I do not rememebr er if the story appied to Bluebard's castle or to the miracuous mandarin, but the librettist was considered as much more "dangerous" than Bartok himself. So, it was proposed to Bartok to play his music but without mentioning the name of the librettiste. Bartok refussed.
An incredible video - thank you! Reminds us the rarity of seeing a duo of such incredible stature (and of course talent). It was easier back then for the Russians to do this, since the musicians lived there and knew each other for decades. Perlman and Ashkenazy were leaders of their era and played together, but since then it is an extreme rarity of a leading pianist and violinist to perform (even at a music festival - and sorry, I am not inclined to say it is happening where some people think it is). And this recital shows Oistrakh still at the height of his abilities- a terrible loss soonafter to the music world.
-- Superbe concert entre deux illustres musiciens. La Sonate de Prokofiev est particulièrement belle. Le tourneur de page qui ressemble étrangement à Yves Saint-Laurent semble apprécié d'être là. :) --
I grew up with Oistrakh and Richter as my idols. Unfortunately, silly politics prevented me from seeing them live. I think their Kreutzer and Spring sonatas are still the best on record. There is something special between these two that has yet to be equaled.
I would to hear them play Beethoven and Schubert sonatas together! I’m 80 now and I too grew up on these recordings- now long lost. It’s a treat to hear them again and be brought back to yesteryear and their style of interpretation and performance. ❤️❤️❤️
thank you so much for uploading !! Great artist - and fantastic concert :) UI can appriciate Oistrach - I was only once able to listen to his playing - such an amazing video

had i bee born earlier, i would have done anything to be in the concert hall for this performance.
Outstanding interpretation, in particular but not only of this absolute masterwork which is the sonata by Bela Bartok.
I agree 100%, I think Oistrakh romantic fire gives the best Bartok sonata, especially when talking about such an early and passionate work.

I dont know….I just dont like his vibrato.
Сейчас часто играют плоским звуком.
