Hi Everyone, Sorry for no videos in almost a week I went on a quick family trip and was unable to film anything. A lot of people asked about how I resin such large canvases so I decided to make a video. Let me know what you think!
I've heard others say that they put a thin layer of resin on the backside of the canvas, allow that to cure, then resin the front, just to make sure it won't sag....
Sorry to be so offtopic but does anyone know a way to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I appreciate any tricks you can give me
Great tutorial, thanks Devin. I have a 24x60 canvas that I want to resin after my pour. I live in an apartment with little space so I purchased PVC pipes to setup on both sides of my table, where I will drape a clean plastic sheet over the pipes to prevent the resin from picking up any particles. Wish me luck. Lol
Very helpful thank you. Re metal scraper, i bought a plastic /silicone shower glass cleaner from a kitchen shop which i will try on my next smaller resin piece in the hope of getting good coverage? I have been unsuccessful using resin and ruined 5 nice pieces so far, going to try sanding and resin again.
Thanks a lot 😊 would have been nice to see how you apply the resin on the side's off your canvas. How do you protect your canvas after you applied the resin, from dust? Do you apply the varnish the same way, or do you use a brush? Some how I have always brush marks in my varnish.
Thank you for your comment, as to protect it sadly the only think I can do it do it in an unused section of the house they are just to large to cover. As for varnish I will always brush on thin coats but I do always end up with small brush marks no matter what I do.
@@DevinsArtistry thank you for your answer. I m glad to hear that I m not alone with the lines in the varnish. But I still hope to finde a way to prevent this from happening. 🙂
This was really helpful, thank you. Do you think you could either do another video or just explain how you do the sides and what is necessary if you do have to do a second coat?
Sure I can think about doing that next time I an doing resin. For the sides since I put all my work in frames I typically just plant them black leaving the resin on the front.
Hey there! Great job, pretty helpful video! Just two questions, how long did resin took to cure completely? and how was the temperature of the room until this cured? issue
Hi, normally it’s 24 hours until you can sand, move and handle it and a full 72 hours until it’s rock hard. It was cured at normal room temperature 22c or 72f
Thanks, great video. I'm preparing to resin a large canvas and hoping not to mess it up. Do you need to cover the piece while the resin is drying to keep particles and dust off? If so, how would you go about covering such a large canvas?
You should try to cover it for sure, its hard to do with such a large canvas I typically with resin and leave it in a room with the door closed overnight and have never really had much of an issue.
Thanks for the video. I was concerned about using resin on a large canvas, but mine is not nearly as large as yours. Two questions, though. Do you cover the canvas after you resin it and if you need a second coat, when do you add the second coat and do you do any kind of prepping before the second coat? Thanks!
Hi, thank you for posting this. So you cover your canvas after you apply the resin? I’ve been working to make a plastic “tent” for large scale paintings. Thanks :)
I don't I typically just do it in a closed room and close the door as I found it really hard to cover some of the larger canvases so far I have been pretty lucky :)
Hi great video. I,m going to do a similar project but I am going to glue the canvas to a worktop first. What would you recommend to glue the canvas, would modge podge be good. I have the worktop sanded and primed ready to glue the canvas. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks
For sure but that is why I used the art resin which is no VOC so no need for a respirator. If you were using a normal resin you would need to use the respirator or have a fresh air source which would make for a hard to understand video :)
Your video was informative. I did 2 12x24 canvases. This was my first time using resin. I used the Resin calculator to see how much resin to use which was10oz. After I finished them, the next morning was a disaster. I didn't add or attach any backing to the back of the painting. Didn't know I had to. The resin ran kinda in the middle and I had divets and dents along the sides of the painting. The resin ran off the edges a little too. It was terrible. I want to try to salvage the paintings. Any suggestions on how to fix them?😒
That does happen if there is no middle support the resin can be very heavy. Now that it is dry give it a light sand clean it well and pour a thin light coat on top, since the middle is thicker the canvas should now be level and the sanding will allow it to bond to each other.
Lived it, but what about the sides? You said to come as close to the edges as you can but then you never said at what point you cover the sides or do you not cover the side
Hello Devin Can you give me some advice I made a big canvas with resin, but at the top there are some ugly spots Don’t now what to do!! Maybe another layer , but do I have to use sandpaper first?
On large canvas I rarely get away with a single coat always something wrong somewhere, so give it a light sand clean the canvas well and spread another thin layer of resin and your finish will be perfect!
I did one much smaller and it was too big to resin as all of it sunk in the middle! Where did you get your canvas and what was the structure in the back supporting it
Devin's Artistry, after the resin is dry, do you take the supporting structure away? What I mean is, does the linen or cotton stretched on the wooden frame is enough? Won’t it break? Sorry for my bad English. Thanks so much for your video!!!
@@kartcontemporary5628 Yes all the support can come off, the resin is very very strong and adheres to the canvas and painting very well no need to worry about it cracking or breaking.
Hi.. i tried this for the first time and some part of resin did not dry at all.. it's still sticky after a week and dripping on the floor.. how to correct it?
Sounds like you did not mix it enough. I can’t over stress how much you need to mix it. You should be able to fix it by adding another well mixed coat over top normally this works for sticky resin but if yours is dripping off the canvas it could be to bad to repair :(

Thats actually not a bad idea it would stiffen the canvas a lot!

So helpful and no wasted time. Fast forward built-in thru longer segments so the info is thorough but swift. Thank you!

I got a scraper exactly the same but plastic from Bunnings. I love it
Very helpful thank you.

Thank you for sharing. Can you show in detail how created the support for the canvas so it won’t sag?
I add cardboard under the canvas with support wood to make sure it does not sag.
@@DevinsArtistry Very important and crucial information that you omitted in your video.
I am always so excited to watch your videos devin!
So helpful, thank you so much for sharing 😊
Enjoyed watching, must try it myself, thank you.
Thank you worth giving it a try.
Thanks, have resin, but afraid to use. This helps.
Glad it was helpful!

Give it a try, its a bit of a learning curve but once you get it its rewarding :)

Thankyou for this video. Can you give an update in this canvas. Is it still okay? I wanna do it too but Im afraid to be mess up
For sure its perfect! The best part of resin is even if you make a small mistake spreading it, you can always add more coats!
@Devin's Artistry Thanks! If you make a small mistake, do you coat the ENTIRE canvas a second time or just the "mistake area"?
Awesome video 👍 really enjoyed watching this my friend 😊
Thank you so much and thank you for taking the time to watch!
Have you thought of using a mini dustpan (plastic) for a trowel? Thanks for the video.
I haven't but we would need something that has the notches to allow the resin to flow in between evenly.
cool video Devin's Artistry. I killed that thumbs up on your video. Keep on up the quality work.
Thanks for sharing this video! Super helpful 👍🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Awesome video, I have never tried to resin such a big piece, thanks for sharing.😊👍
Thank you so much for watching!
Great video. How much resin in total did you use? I have a 30x40 inch canvas and the resin calculator said I needed 2 gallons. Seems like too much.

What size canvas was that and how many ounces of resin did you put on that canvas? Your work is beautiful and thank you for sharing
The canvas is a 60x36" and I used about 60oz of resin on it. Thank you so much for your kind words!
@@DevinsArtistry you are very welcome and thanks again ❤
How do you photograph your resined matings when they are finished? Thanks!
Great video. Thank you !!!When do you put the second coat on ? How long do you wait ?
Thanks for the video! What do you use to clean the canvas? Just a wet paper towel?
Wet paper towel and a bit of dish soap cleans it right up. Just make sure you get all so soap residue off.

Hi, artist.
I am Amir from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
A question.
Oil on canvas, how to get shine without using epoxy!?
Thank you!
Hi and thankyou for the video. Why are you using a wooden stick on the resin? It looks like you are popping bubbles? Is a torch not enough?
Hi, sometimes the bubbles can be suborn and need a little extra help to pop out.
BEAUTIFUL! THANK YOU! 💓💓💓
Thank you so much!!
if you have done a piece new to it and didnt back it can you sand it almost back a little and then put a clear coat finely back on top

Hello thank you for the video but you didn't do the sides is there a reason for that ?
I frame all my canvases so I tend to keep it all on the front.
I can pour a 20mm thick resin over a canvas which is going to be stuck onto a 16mm marine ply board ?
Will this work without any air bubbles ?
great info, thanks
Thank you for watching!!

Sorry for the late reply, but I don't know about gluing it down how would you release it after?
@@DevinsArtistry Thanks for the reply. I used modge podge to glue the canvas to the worktop then epoxy on top. Worked out perfect.
We done 🤗
I keep getting divots in my resin, im doing exactly what you did.
I’d like to know the amount of resin you used for that size?

I typically do not cover the sides as when it dries you most likely will be drips if you attempt it.
My question also is how did you fix the back of canvas
Tnx
I put cardboard and wood behind to support it from sagging.
@@DevinsArtistry do u remove the card board later after the resin has dried ??
